2022 Minor League Week 03 Games Thread (4/19-4/24/22)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
We don’t know that, Ernie Clement came out of nowhere , we went crazy when Owen Miller got off to a hot start last year, this kid is 2 years younger…..Now I’m not saying he going to turn into anything special, but this kid got my attention……

Clement wasn't as much of a surprise to some people. He was originally on our top 30 prospect list...

Also I gotta apologize to @MadThinker88 we got a little off track in the game thread!

So to review the night 4-21...

Columbus won 12-5, Maile, Fermin, Palacios all contributed. It was a team effort with the offense. I am glad to see Maile is hitting well. He actually should be cleared to come back I would believe somewhere in or at the end of this next roadtrip... Fermin actually had 4 hits and 4 RBIs from the 9 hole

Akron... Lost 2-3, They had 6 hits but 14 SOs... Allen looked good again, 79 pitches, 6 innings, 7 SOs and 1 BB. He gave up 2 ER though, but it was a quality start! Enright also had a good night from the bullpen...

Lake County lost today 3-9... Hickman and Torres both struggled and so did the defense 5 Errors and 2 of them by Hickman... The offense though got 6 hits and 11 walks, but only got three runs... 1B Naranjo had a good game, he went 1-2 with 3 walks from the leadoff spot. Noel has 4 Errors at 3B this season... He hasn't played any 1B yet.

Lynchburg won today 8-1... For the most part everyone played well, but the Spotlight goes to 2B Jake Fox today... 2 for 2, 2 RBIs, 3 BBs and 2 Steals

Allen looked good again, 79 pitches, 6 innings, 7 SOs and 1 BB. He gave up 2 ER though
I watch the play where he gave up the runs, the 3rd basement let a routine ground ball go underneath his glove with 2 outs both run scores and they gave the batter a double……lol

Some better results for the CLE affiliates. This time they go 2-2 with a +7 run diff.
On the week they are now 4-8 and a run diff of -17.
Time to move forward to Friday games...

All OPS's are not the same.

OPS based upon power are not equal to OPS based upon OBP. One translates better to MLB than the other.

Bobby Bradley had a .907 for a full season in AAA, powered by a ton of homers, and it meant squat.

Kwan had a partial season in AAA with an OPS of .903, powered by BA and BBs. It meant a lot.

If you have any hole in your swing, MLB pitchers will find it and abuse it.
I certainly think OGonz is a fringy guy, but he does seem to have better contact skill than Bradley... I'm not a believer, but depending on the play of our current MLB players if he can keep producing, I'd probably give him a shot over Bradley, Chang....

But, there is the problem ... Gonzalez isn't replacing Bradley nor Chang from a fielding prospective. Last year, Gonzalez looked to have a space to compete against a depleted OF. Now, he has to win RF (as LF/CF is Kwan/Straw) against a line of prospects coming up -- Naylor, Jones, Palacios, Valera and even Brennan (as 4th OF). Yet, he really isn't even a 4th/5th OF due to his lack of fielding (late inning replacement which is Clement for 5th OF spot).

He is going to luck out in that Naylor/Miller looks to be some sort of 1B tag-team over Bradley (taking Naylor away from RF competition). The only other space for Oscar is him over Reyes at DH which isn't going to happen (as Reyes isn't moving to RF long-term - Reyes won't be traded this year to free DH space- Oscar will be a FA at year-end again). Oscar just has to hope to be an injury replacement as someone even has to be on 60-day DL for him to get a 40 man spot.

That's why I said "it doesn't look like" as opposed to declaring that there is absolutely no chance of him making it here.

I don't think Clement "came out of nowhere". He seemed to fit the UIF position well for awhile before getting the job.

Comment: There is a lot to like about Ernie Clemente's game.. I likened/comp'd him to Whit Merrifield, the late bloomer / all around Swiss army knife that has a huge following in Kansas City..

Whit had a MiLB line .274/.333/.735 with a little power.. He was not really more than a roster holder in the KC system.. but, there was something there.. he swung a good bat.. worked his ass off.. carried six different gloves with him everywhere and he could be penciled into the lineup card anywhere a body was needed.. In short.. he was a utility guy that played mostly 2B in the infield & LF in the OF.. He wouldn't embarrass the club wherever he played..

Sort of like what we're seeing with Ernie with his minor league numbers: .275/.330/.686 and not much power.. Whit ended with over 3000 MiLB AB's.. Ernie looks to be breaking into MLB with about a third of that.. Are they equal?.. Physically, they're both about the same height.. Whit is a bit older, so he's got about 20 pounds on Ernie. Ernie, no doubt, will fill in over the next couple of years to about that level or maybe more. He should generate some power..not much. It's a stretch to say Ernie will be as good as Whit.. but.. not as much of a stretch as it once was..

Thoughts?

Actually, you could easily give Bradley's spot to OGon. Removing Bradley would give 1B duties to Naylor. Giving RF duties to OGon would put Mercado in the 4th OF spot. The crunch comes in the MIF, but it was there regardless. I'd give 2B to Miller and slide him to 1B when Naylor needs off his feet. I'd give SS duties to Gimenez for now. Clement remains the UIF.

Didnt the Guardians get a new hitting coach? We seem to have a more advanced approach at the plate than the past, can the hitting coach be part of what we are seeing in these young bats?

With the game in the 8th

Oscar Gonzalez is 2-4 with a HR, a 2B - 2 RBI and of course a K.

For the year in 14 games: 4 HR, 2-3B 3-2B and 13 RBIs - 9Ks, 1BB

Side note - Maile is ready to go IMO

4/22...

Lynchburg everyone in the lineup has been producing tonight...

Tomorrow, Williams and Nikhazy are both starting in the double headed at LC... Those would be games to check out (sadly they aren't at home)

Had a decent chance to pad the stats in the 9th - but nope. OGonz strikes out on 3 pitches

Be interesting who pitches in Columbus this weekend .... with McCarty still up (went last Sat) and Quantrill back, I assume Myers will get a start today. I noticed that they kept him out of a game on Wed or so which I assumed was for COVID issue on MLB team (if he was needed for another player) - hope not injury (but could be the Civale type hold off for more side work). Yet, we also need to get Battenfield in this week as well.

They could start promoting and push up several SP.

Allen is the obvious 1st SP to go to AAA
G. Williams to AA
R. Boone to A+
