My dvr recorded a Cavs v Raptors game from last November, when Sexton was still playing. Two points here:
1. Dean Wade looked good in the 3 role. He knows when to be aggressive, and that Toronto D was suffocating. Been an advocate for him to Start, and I think its his to lose.
2. Sexton. I have been a staunch believer in his abilities, and could not wait to see him with this team. The 11 or so games he played before injury - he looked like crap in all of them (IMO). I just recall that not being the Sexton I saw to close the prior season. Watching him vs Toronto - I just must have forgotten about his warts, and was admittedly more enamored with the idea of an improved Sexton coming into this season. He has not reached his ceiling, but the way he played, at least in this game, did not seem like a strong fit for the team. I always believed that if we had Sexton all of last year, a lot of our woes would have been solved, and we would be set up for success.
Now, I believe we would have been on the treadmill. Especially with the competition in the East, and with his limitations. Moves would have had to be made, and Sexton should have been one of those moves this upcoming season if we kept him. To extract the value out of a guy coming off an injury for a certified All Star - brilliant. It changed the calculus of our potential to succeed. Instead of being multiple players away, we are now, arguably, one player away, all things equal.
I wish him luck in Utah and will be watching him wreak havoc. But in this offense, his role would have been much different and it is not something that suits his style. He may have even driven his trade value down if he started the season with us.
I give Koby credit for striking at what I perceive to be the best time. To gain a player of Don's caliber and at his age, to integrate into what we are building. Home run. And to have the belief that we are a piece or two away, and to have multiple seasons in front of us to find that fit? Not many teams can say that.
Let's get this shit started.
