2022 Off-season Thread - The Future is Bright

There is nothing more depressing for the opposition than when they need a stop - and can't get one. The Cavs have way too many good options on offense.
The defense I'm not sure of, but we should score plenty of points.

I've been banging the drum for Wade to start and here's someone who agrees. Like I said, all he has to do is improve his corner 3 percentage and he'll be very effective. The front line of Allen/Mobley/Wade outscored opponents by 7 points more than Allen/Mobley/Markkanen last year.

If anyone has time, listen to the last 15 minutes of Windy’s new podcast. Talks about the Cavs for a bit. He sounds really excited.

He specifically said Dean Wade looked really good in the runs that Windy watched. Also mentioned that “he’s no doctor”, but Rubio appears to be ahead of schedule.

My dvr recorded a Cavs v Raptors game from last November, when Sexton was still playing. Two points here:

1. Dean Wade looked good in the 3 role. He knows when to be aggressive, and that Toronto D was suffocating. Been an advocate for him to Start, and I think its his to lose.

2. Sexton. I have been a staunch believer in his abilities, and could not wait to see him with this team. The 11 or so games he played before injury - he looked like crap in all of them (IMO). I just recall that not being the Sexton I saw to close the prior season. Watching him vs Toronto - I just must have forgotten about his warts, and was admittedly more enamored with the idea of an improved Sexton coming into this season. He has not reached his ceiling, but the way he played, at least in this game, did not seem like a strong fit for the team. I always believed that if we had Sexton all of last year, a lot of our woes would have been solved, and we would be set up for success.

Now, I believe we would have been on the treadmill. Especially with the competition in the East, and with his limitations. Moves would have had to be made, and Sexton should have been one of those moves this upcoming season if we kept him. To extract the value out of a guy coming off an injury for a certified All Star - brilliant. It changed the calculus of our potential to succeed. Instead of being multiple players away, we are now, arguably, one player away, all things equal.

I wish him luck in Utah and will be watching him wreak havoc. But in this offense, his role would have been much different and it is not something that suits his style. He may have even driven his trade value down if he started the season with us.

I give Koby credit for striking at what I perceive to be the best time. To gain a player of Don's caliber and at his age, to integrate into what we are building. Home run. And to have the belief that we are a piece or two away, and to have multiple seasons in front of us to find that fit? Not many teams can say that.

Let's get this shit started.

Wade can certainly start against a select group of starting lineups. He is the one guy with small forward experience that has a bigger frame.

If the argument is for Wade to always start no matter what, I'm informing the conductor I'm off at the next exit. Several reasons for that:

1. While Wade has improved as a perimeter defender, he is not a quick twitch athlete. If a team like the Pacers throw out a very quick starting lineup like Haliburton/Mathurin/Hield, he is going to be isolated or run ragged through off ball picks.

2. Okoro had his faults last season. I think I was the first guy complaining that he doesn't have a small forward frame back before he became a Cavalier. That said, regulating him to 9th man will kill his trade value, especially when he very well can help this starting lineup as a defensive specialist. Additionally, as a 21 year old, his ceiling is much higher than Wade. Give him a shot at that fifth spot, especially when the opponent is exploitable.

False. Okoro started off the bench last season until the 12th game.

While true, Okoro was also on the rotation while Wade was not.

There are simply consequences to pulling a guy out of the rotation who is this young. Don't ignore them. The playoffs still do not begin in September.

I'm having incredibly hard time figuring out what Okoro does well as a starter on this squad. Like what can he excel at? transition offense? defensively, he will not be guarding point guards, right?

Okoro started because we needed a 2. We had no on else to throw in there. We did not want to bring in Ricky and ruin the flow of the 2nd unit, so it was Okoro's by default.

With the 1 and 2 spots cemented, running Okoro out as a 3 will cause mass switching up top, running our guys ragged and into screens where injuries can occur.

It will be a position by committee until we find the secret sauce. And my bet is that by April, it will be someone starting at the 3 that is not on the roster today.

Not sure the point of this, but Okoro started 61 of the 67 games he played in last season.
Okoro has started every game of his career. I'd be surprised to see him benched for Wade

What you said was false. Wade started at SF before Okoro did last season. That’s what I’m getting at.
