2022 Season | Series #12 | Reds @ Guardians | May 17-18, 2022

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Most frustrating loss of the year. No excuse to let Tyler Naquin and a bunch of other stiffs beat us.
Uhhhhhh Tyler Naquin is better than our RFer so.............

Epic fail by the bullpen. Stephan walked the leadoff hitter in his inning, and the guy was hitting .185! Of course he stole second and scored.

Sandlin walked three in a row in the 10th. What a choke job.

Gotta hand it to Naquin. First a home run, then with two out and nobody on he lays down a bunt against Clase, steals second, and scores on a base hit. That was the run that kept us from winning in 9 innings.

The Reds did the little things, including two key stolen bases. The G's were 1-for-8 with RISP. The announcers pointed out that Reyes is 15 for his last 25 at the Prog. So of course they sit him down in a game where we were desparate for runs. We even had a day off yesterday. Huh?

Terrible at-bat by Jose to end it. With a 1-1 count he chases two back foot sliders and gets himself out. Too bad - when Miller hit that home run I thought we were going to win it. But Sandlin walked in the winning run and Jose chased two unhittable pitches out of the zone.

Palacios looks like he's overswinging. He's popping balls up.

I thought there was a report before the game that Reyes was dealing with a personal issue and they hoped he would be available to pinch hit.

Tyler Mahle goes for the Reds tonight. Players currently on the Guardians are hitting .287/1.051 off him. Gimenez is 2-for-2, Jose is 3-for-8, and Hedges has two home runs in six at-bats. Franmil is only 1-for-8, however, and Rosario is 0-for-4. Seems like our lefties are doing much better against him.

First time through the order batters are hitting .215 off Mahle. The second time through it's .302. He's only faced 16 batter three times in 8 starts. They just want him to get through the order twice without too much damage.

His road ERA in four starts is 6.50.

You can't let Mahle get ahead in the count. When batters put the ball in play on an 0-2 pitch they're 0-for-15. When it's a 1-2 count they're 3-for-19. They only way to explain numbers like that is that hitters are chasing bad pitches when they are down in the count and stiking out or making weak contact.

If I'm Valaikas I would tell our hitters never to swing at an 0-2 or 1-2 pitch unless it's right down the middle. Chances are it's going to be off the plate. Show them their batting averages when they put the ball in play on those counts.

For example, Franmil is 0-for-11 when he hits an 0-2 pitch and 3-for-22 when he hits a 1-2 pitch. That's a combined 3-for-33 with 26 strikeouts. IOW, when he swings on a 0-2 or 1-2 count he strikes out 79% of the time (except when he fouls it off).

What if he just took a pitch those 33 at-bats? Probably 25 of them would have been outside the zone and he would still be alive with a better count. He's hitting .100 in those counts now. What does he have to lose?

I assume the G's have internal stats that show how often he gets a pitch in the zone on a 0-2 or 1-2 count. I'll bet it's under 10%.

The bullpen gave up three runs in the last three innings, and that's Stephan, Clase, and Sandlin. Sandlin needs to man up and trust his stuff instead of nibbling.

How did Farmer, who came in hitting .193, get three hits and a HBP?

At least Plesac was throwing 93 and got through six innings with two earned runs. Progress. But yeah, Naquin is a low breaking ball hitter and you don't throw him a low breaking ball inside. Plesac got two strikes on him with fastballs and then tried to get cute. My guess is the pitch was supposed to be low and inside either to get a strikeout or set up another fastball away, but he didn't get it low or inside enough.
