2022 Season Series #29 | Tigers @ Guardians | July 14-17, 2022 (End of first half)

Can I ask ... how many times have the Guardians missed out on gauging talent for a long-term signee? The last one was the Swisher FA signing ... You can try to count the Martin trade or EE at $20 million by year 3 ... but very few times did they miss on signing a guy long-term this early on in their career. You may have to go back to Fausto Carmona fiasco or Kipnis.

We thought they missed on Clase after a few games this spring.

With all this back-and-forth with Straw, he has gone on .317/.795 during the past 14 games. Like Mercado, this doesn't mean that he is out of the woods. However, Guardians signed him because they saw something and they are not going to kill Straw's confidence like they did with Jet Johnson by shipping him out to AAA to stew. The more upside they see, the more they will stick with him.

And, this is not about the extension. The extension is because they see something special. They knew Brennan/Kwan/Palacios/Valera were on their way up in some fashion or another. Plesac/Civale/Clement didn't get an extension just for the hell of it. Long-term signees are special. Straw and Clase got them as they are seen as top players. That just doesn't disappear with a bad month or two.

@CDAV45 Bimbo said something about Valera getting called up to AAA after the ASB (not sure exactly when). But if this is to happen, you'd think there is likely a corresponding move, and that move may just make you happy.

Wrong.....snubbing is getting overlooked when you've earned an opportunity. That doesn't mean it was or will be done with malice or prejudice either. They committed to Straw by signing him to an extension. Regardless of his shitty offensive play he continued to be trotted out there while not 1, but 2 CFers in Columbus continue to rake away. Snubbed so far, but we'll see what happens.

Take Straw and his contract out of the equation and put Brennan or Benson in CF this season. Do you believe they would have been granted the same courtesy or sent back to Columbus to work out the kinks?
so you agree with my definition of snubbing.. thanks..

what does Straw have to do with this conversation?.. (A: NOTHING)..

Brennan and Benson aren' being snubbed.. by anyone's definition..

I think the operative word in this case is overlooked.

I'm not unhappy at all. I'm extremely excited about the future of this team/organization. I just think this is an interesting challenge that could present itself to the FO and Tito. Let me be very clear, it's a good problem to have.

I'm not sure what that corresponding move will be or if it will make me happy TBH. I've been suggesting for quite some time now that there are going to be some difficult decisions to make in the very near future. Things have a way of working themselves out though. My angst isn't that a prospect will fail because we all know that is the likelihood. Instead, it is not finding out and watching them outperform who they chose to keep. Even at that, I want to be able to say that they were given an opportunity here, but failed to take advantage of it or were outperformed instead of just accepting that they weren't given that chance. Clear as mud?

You need to catch up or just sit back and listen to the conversation.

and no, your definition is different than mine....thanks..

At this point they are being snubbed. Will they continue to be is the question?

Fair points Pete, but when is the last time this organization had this much talent boiling up from the farm? It's a conundrum for sure, but things will work out. They always do. It's an interesting conversation for the most part and there has been no FO bashing by almost all of us. That's not my thing anyway. They have my full support even if I disagree here or there. It's easy being a backseat driver and second guessing decisions.

@CDAV45 IMO Valera, Benson, and Jones are mostly in the same mold. They are LH corner OF who will draw walks and hit for some power, potentially more than just some power. I mean sure you could put Valera or Benson in CF or LF but to me they are going to be RFs (unless you are to put Jones at 3B which we obviously won't). Add in Palacios and Brennan to the mix and this lefty OF thing is potentially a bigger roster issue to worry ourselves with than all the MIF, especially as they are all concentrated at the highest level of the minors.

I see no room for Palacios. Good hitter but redundant IMO. I don't think you'll find many that think Valera is of the same mold as Jones and Benson. Benson is capable of being a good defensive CFer so I'm not designating him for corner OF duties only just yet.

Valera, Jones, Benson, Brennan, Kwan and Palacios add up to way too many f'n LHH OFers.

What is he then? Strengths and weaknesses are very similar. To get to the next level (I don't mean literally AAA) he needs to cut down the K's. He has an advantage over the other guys because time is on his side, but he is a similar kind of ballplayer.

Damn rain. Enduring four days without baseball Is hard enough (right in the middle of the season) but now five? And two games in one day doesn't make up for it.

Better too many good left-handed hitting outfielders than not enough.

Valera is just a different hitter. His short, quick stroke provides plenty of bat to ball skills with the power upside. He's a 21 yr old in the Eastern League posting very good numbers. There's a reason behind the hype.

Well watch the draft tonight or get MiLB.tv and watch minor league games... lol
