2022 Season Series #29 | Tigers @ Guardians | July 14-17, 2022 (End of first half)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

Reading the conversation about our RH batters strikes a chord with me, as I've previously talked about how our lineup against LHP is borderline unwatchable. I don't pretend to be as knowledgeable as anyone here about our minor league prospects or our short/long term plan for building the team.

But there is one move that kind of stands out to me as something that absolutely (in my mind) should happen, the sooner the better. That is, upgrading the catcher position. If I was calling the shots I'd figure out a way to trade with the A's for Sean Murphy, and I'd do it right away. He's a top notch defensive catcher, and he's not a black hole in the batter's box. The A's are clearly sellers and in rebuilding mode. I have a very hard time understanding any reason why we wouldn't make this move right now. It would be a boost to the current roster and Murphy could remain as a veteran defensive presence who can give even a slight boost from the batter's box while we develop whatever young catching prospects are next in line.

Guess that’s a WRAP, on the first half. No baseball today.

while benson's results so far this season have been eye opening/positive.. what isn't being discussed is the areas he continues to fail in.. Those are the areas that MiLB'ers typically cannot exploit.. That won't be the case at the ML level.. The best of the best pitchers in the world butter their bread by making good hitters look foolish.. They salivate at that chance every time someone has the temerity to stand in a batters box and try to hit their stuff...
Yeah yeah yeah. We heard the same thing about OGon and Jones. As far as I can tell Benson doesn't chase pitches which is made evident by his walk rate. His average is steady climbing and up to .264 while his OBP stays well over .400(.423 to be exact). I'm not commenting to either support or object to the opinion that he will fail. Instead I'm telling you that I know that you don't know. I don't know either. Hell, nobody knows and it's poor form to ignore what he's doing and suggest that can't succeed even though you may very well be correct in the end. Again, why are we so willing to jump to conclusions? Clearly he's talented. Clearly he's performing very well in Columbus. Clearly he brings a hitting aspect that this team lacks. Let's get a good look at him and then we can all say with confidence what he can or can't do.

I guess sometimes there just aren't enough seats at the table so somebody is gonna get snubbed.

Who does he take at-bats from? Kwan? Straw? Gonzalez? Jones?

That's why I said that sometimes there just aren't enough seats at the table so somebody is gonna get snubbed.

Who is our current 4th OFer?
It's either Reyes or Clement, solid!

well.. that a is acoincidence.. then.. I know that you don't know...

-no such projection of a failure exists in the posting..

-no such conclusions have been posted or have been reached..

-snubbing is when someone earned the spot and didn't get it.. no such snubbing is or has occurred..

Otherwise.. good posting.. however useless..

Wrong.....snubbing is getting overlooked when you've earned an opportunity. That doesn't mean it was or will be done with malice or prejudice either. They committed to Straw by signing him to an extension. Regardless of his shitty offensive play he continued to be trotted out there while not 1, but 2 CFers in Columbus continue to rake away. Snubbed so far, but we'll see what happens.

Take Straw and his contract out of the equation and put Brennan or Benson in CF this season. Do you believe they would have been granted the same courtesy or sent back to Columbus to work out the kinks?

If Brennan or Benson had that stretch Straw did in the bigs, they would have been sent back down... hence why I said, for better or for worse Straw is the starting CF...

Well no shit Straw is the starting CFer. The discussion Coach is if he should be? Kwan and either OGon or Jones appear to be our corner OFers so does that mean Valera has to be traded? Or maybe it would be a better comparison by saying that Valera is the heir apparent and that no matter how Jones or OGon perform RF will be his when he's ready. Interesting conversation that I have no answers to other than I wouldn't be so deeply committed to Straw as the unchallenged CF going forward.

To start the season the answer is yes... if you don't add the extension in play, I would still say the answer is yes... He is better defensively than the other guys and has MLB time with a track record that says he is way better than his slump.

Now, his leash would be way way shorter than it currently is, pretty much if he didn't shape up by the trade deadline, I think the team would have change around personal more. I actually wouldn't be surprised, if the extension didn't happen and if Straw wasn't straightening out, Brennan should have gotten a promotion...
