Coming off a four-game road winning streak in which they averaged 11 runs per game the smoking hot Guardians play their first home series of the season against the San Francisco Giants, who had the best regular season record in baseball last year at 107-55. The Giants were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs in five games by the Dodgers.

The Giants are 4-2 this season with all six games played at home. Offensively they’ve been inconsistent, scoring 1, 2, 2, 3, 5, and 13 runs. They also had a 10th inning ghost run which I didn’t count.

As a team they’re hitting .256/.732 versus .305/.868 for the Guardians. 1B Brandon Belt is on fire, hitting .438/.526/.875/1.401. Joc Pederson is at .308/938 and C Joey Bart is hitting .286/1.016. Their most dangerous hitters, Belt and Pederson, are lefties so I won’t be surprised to see Gose, Hentges, and maybe Logan Allen in this series if these guys come up to bat late in a close game.

The Giants will be starting two lefties in this three-game series which might be good for the G’s as they have some very hot right-handed hitters at the moment. Hosey is 3-for-3 against lefties with a home run. As a team the G’s are hitting an incredible .324/.993 against lefties.

Carlos Rodon will go against Plesac in the opener tonight. Rodon had a great season for the White Sox last year, going 13-5 with a 2.37 ERA. The Giants rewarded him with a 2-year, $42 million deal. In his first start for them he pitched five innings allowing one earned run and striking out 12.

Rodon started three games against the Tribe (as they were known at the time) last year, going 2-0, with a 2.70 ERA. One of those starts was a no-hitter. Hosey is 10-for-41 against him lifetime with 4 doubles and a triple, but none of the other current Guardian hitters have done anything against him. Straw, Rosario, and Franmil are a combined 2-for-19.

Plesac pitched 5.2 innings in his first start allowing 3 hits and no runs against the Royals. He’ll have a tougher lineup to face tonight.

The G’s may be catching the Giants at a good time as they have some injuries. Starting SS Brandon Crawford is day-to-day. Crawford hit .298/.895 last year but has just 3 singles in 16 at-bats so far. 3B Evan Longoria, 2B Tommy LaStella, and LF LeMonte Wade, Jr are all out. So the Giants are missing three starters for sure and possibly a fourth.

So it should be a contest of good starting pitching against good hitting on both sides, although the Giants are missing a few bats at the moment. The Giants are averaging 4.50 runs per game thanks to the 13-run game against the Padres where they scored 9 runs off Yu Darvish in the first two innings. Take away those two innings and they are averaging under three runs per game.

The second and third game matchups are Quantrill against Anthony DeSclafini and Civale against Alex Wood, the other lefty.

This series will give us a fair idea of how the youthful Guardians stack up against an elite team coming off a 105-win season and having added one of the better starters in baseball.

Thanks Wham!

Doing Naylor the huge solid for opening day.

The writing is on the wall for one of Bradley/Chang.
Naylor is on some notice too.

He hasn't exactly been "good" at the ML level... Yet.

Naylor does have options though

Well I guess they couldn't wait to get Naylor and his 65 wRC+ against LHP into the lineup vs. Rodon.

It's a nice story to have Naylor back for the opener, but maybe fans would rather win.

I personally would have had Mercado in... but since Naylor will be the normal guy in the lineup, maybe they wanted him playing opening day?

I think he'll have a lot of days off vs. lefties but he's mainly in to make the dramatic return. Also Mercado is in. Essentially Clement (or Gimenez) is the one who is pushed out with Miller shifting over to 2B.

Finally a peaceful home opener I've come to with no out of town protestors yelling in my ears.

Put the ball in the air tonight and it's flying out!!! Holy wind batman

I'm trying to walk from my hotel and had to stop after 2 blocks.... Good lord. It's supposed to die down around opening pitch
