After getting swept by the Yankees by a cumulative score of 19-7 the G’s road trip heads west with a four-game set against the Angels. Some might call this the Guardian Angel series. The Angels are 9-7 overall and 4-5 at home.
The Angels so far are a very good hitting team but not so great at pitching. They rank 5th in the majors in runs per game at 4.80. They are tied for 1st in home runs per game, 2nd in ISO, 3rd in slugging percentage, 4th in OPS and BABIP, and 7th in batting average.
Mike Trout leads the way with a line of .333/1.144. But despite getting 14 hits, including 4 home runs, he only has 5 RBI’s, so he has not been hitting with men on base. Brandon Marsh is hitting .306/.956, and Jack Mayfield .321/.923. As a team they are hitting .248/.750 overall and equally well against right- and left-handed pitching.
The Angels rank 21st in team ERA at 4.06. They’re pretty good at preventing baserunners, ranking 10th in WHIP, but they are prone to the long ball, ranking 27th in home runs per 9 innings.
Shane Bieber goes against Michael Lorenzen in the opener. Lorenzen is a 30-year-old right-hander who has been a reliever for the last six years with the Reds but is starting for the Angels. In two starts he’s pitched 9.1 innings with an ERA of 4.82. His splits are ridiculous. Right-handed batters are 1-for-22 against him while lefties are hitting .417/1.462. Tiny sample, of course, but it doesn’t get any more extreme than that.
Looking at his record against Guardian batters, Anthony Gose is 2-for-3 off him, back when Gose was an outfielder. If Tito needs a pinch hitter he should bring in Gose. Austin Hedges is 3-for-4 against him. Maybe we should start Gose on the mound and let him be our Shohei Ohtani.
Bieber is off to a good start with a 2.25 ERA so far. His last start he threw 86 pitches so it looks like he’s stretched out. The current Angels are hitting .221/.560 against him.
The Giants and Yankees currently rank 2nd in 3rd in team ERA, so the Guardians have faced two of the top three pitching staffs in 40% of their games so far. They still rank 2nd in runs per game. Hopefully against the Angels, who are 21st in ERA, the bats will get going again.
