2023-24 Season | Game #57 | Mavericks @ Cavaliers | Feb. 27, 2024 | 7:00 p.m.

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Watched a recap and it blows my mind that JBB never thought of putting Wade on Doncic.

How badly were we coached tonight? Asking politely…
Nobody was stopping Doncic tonight. He was hitting step-back 3's off one foot. Did you see his first bucket? Pump faked Mobley into the air, took the contact, and hit a baseline hook shot off the glass with heavy spin. Crazy.

I assume JBB's thinking was that nobody was going to stop Luka so we need to outscore him. He put an offensive team on the court with Garland, Mitchell, Struss, LeVert and Mobley or Allen. If Wade was checking him Luka scores anyway and we're playing 4 on 5 offensively. That's my guess.

It's interesting that Mobley was on the bench down the stretch even though he finished with 12 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists (wow!), and a steal in 28 minutes. Evan scored the first two buckets of the 4th quarter and added two free throws but was taken out with 6:48 left and didn't come back in until there were 29 seconds left for defensive purposes.

When he went out the Cavs were down by 2 points. Two minutes and 10 seconds later they were down by 10.
True, though Cavs were up 3 when he came back in, so they were +5 without him during that stretch

Well he forgot Sam in that case.

Seems to me like he got bailed hard by Strus but what do I know.

Missed the game babysitting my little nephews(2 and 4)

Got the 2 year old to catch a basketball (mini sized) for the first time so well worth it.

Just watched a few of those 10-12 game highlight reels on YouTube and while I know those only show made shots and highlight defensive plays, the takeaway I got was that this game was intense, physical, max effort, and more like a playoff game than a regular season game.

Is that how it looked/felt watching the actual full game or am I just getting a misread of the highlights?

If you watch Strus after he releases the shot you can see he's thinking "It has a chance, it has a chance" and then right before it splashes he starts turning away, knowing it was good before it actually landed in the twines - no rim. Awesome!

Doncic was right there and tried to distract him but was careful to stay off to the side so there would be no contact. The last thing he needed was for Strus to get three fouls shots trailing by one point with 0.5 seconds left.

When Garland got tied up on the previous possession and had to call time out it was their last one. If the foul is called and Garland hits two free throws the Mavs get the ball at half court down by 3 with 9 seconds to go. It would have been a completely different ending with Doncic or Kyrie putting up a 3 to tie it at the buzzer, or win it if Garland missed a free throw.

Mobley deflected the inbounds pass on the Mavs' last possession and both he and Okoro went for the loose ball, but Doncic got there first and they both overran it. We needed Okoro to stay in front of Doncic and make him work for a contested shot, but suddenly he's driving into the paint uncontested where three Cavs were waiting. They all were focused on Luka and left Washington alone under the rim where Luka hit him with a no-look bounce pass.

Tough break - it would have been better if Mobley didn't deflect the pass and Luka caught it with Okoro in front of him. Mobley would have dropped off Kleber and doubled Luka, forcing him to give up the ball. Maybe Kyrie gets off the last shot to win the game - who knows. But all's well that ends well.
