After one of their worst losses of the season, and possibly THE worst, the Cavs return home to take on the Sixers for the fourth and final time this year. The Cavs won in overtime in Philly in November but lost twice in February by scores of 104-97 in Philly (with Mitchell out) and 123-121 in Cleveland (with Mitchell scoring 36).

Joel Embiid missed both February games but the Sixers won all the same. Buddy Hield and Kelly Oubre each had 24 points in the win in Cleveland, combining to go 7-for-11 from deep.

The Sixers are in 8th place, 1.5 games out of 6th, which they would obviously like to get to in order to avoid the play-in. For the season they are 18-18 on the road and 10-20 since Embiid went down.

Both teams have had one day off.

The Sixers are 26-8 with Embiid on the floor and 13-26 when he does not play. So basically the Cavs are playing a home game against a 13-26 team. However, it’s a team that is 2-0 against the Cavs without Joel.

In the last two weeks the Sixers are -2.5 in non-garbage time point differential while the Cavaliers are -8.4. However, Evan Mobley and Max Strus have just returned to the lineup and Donovan Mitchell may return tonight.

Tyrese Maxey leads the Sixers in scoring at 25.8 ppg on 45% from the field and 38% on 3’s. Tobias Harris, Kelly Oubre, and Buddy Hield are next at 17, 15, and 13 ppg. De’Anthony Melton averages 11.5 ppg but he is out. Cameron Payne averages 10 ppg off the bench.

Their current starting lineup is Maxey at PG, Kyle Lowry (who turned 38 this week) at SG, Oubre and Harris at the forward spots, and C Mo Bamba. Paul Reed, Payne, Hield and 35-year-old Nic Batum come off the bench. Lowry may be 38 but in two games against the Cavs he is averaging 22.5 points on 54% from the field and 10-for-19 on 3’s. The little MF’er just won’t go away.

Reed, Payne, Maxey, Hield, and Batum are all shooting between 36-39% on 3’s.

The Sixers are averaging just 102.8 points per game in 15 games in March. Embiid being out is really impacting their ability to score. Paul Reed, however, his hitting 41% of his 3’s in March so the Cavs can’t leave him open on pick-and-pops. Same for Mo Bamba, who is hitting 37.5% from deep in March. The Sixers have five players who can shoot 3’s on the floor at all times.

The return of Mitchell (assuming he plays), Strus, and Mobley to the lineup will obviously give the Cavs a big lift. And they usually bounce back and play well after a bad game.

“That was a really bad loss for us,” Strus said following the Cavs’ 118-111 defeat to the floundering and directionless Charlotte Hornets. “We just didn’t play hard. Nobody wanted to play defense tonight. That was our problem. Can’t lose to teams like this at this point in the season.”

Bickerstaff called his players “lazy”.

I don’t think we brought the right mental approach,” Bickerstaff said…It’s on me to do a better job and figure out what the problem is. It’s my responsibility to figure it out.”

I’m expecting more intensity tonight, especially now that the Cavs have fallen behind the Knicks into 4th place. But they are 0-2 against the new look Sixers with Embiid out so they need to figure out what they’ve been doing wrong against this team and correct it - now.

I attended the Sixers one point brutal home loss vs the Clippers, who didn’t give a shit until the closing moments. Sixers had bad turnovers, dumb fouls and an awful non call at the end that the NBA admitted. They’ll be pissed.

Maxey is awesome. He’s a bit like Garland but more explosive, a better finisher at the rim, pushes the pace and has a low turnover rate. I think he’s a strong candidate for MIP and he made the all star team. Similar to Garland he’s had to carry the team offensively and that’s made winning difficult because what’s around him is weaker than it appears.

Tobias Harris played well until Embiid got hurt. He’s been getting pushed around on defense and he’s very inconsistent offensively. Philly fans have soured on him. He’s a UFA at the end of the season but not doing much to improve his contract prospects.

Kelly Oubre is a low IQ LeVert. Maddeningly inconsistent and prone to dumb shit.

Lowry is washed. He starts but makes no real impression on the game. Averaging less than 10 point per 36 and he plays 28 minutes a night. Sixers miss Melton.

Reed is ok. RoCo is out.

Bamba will make some nice plays and can defend but he’s not a starter. He’s just the least worst starting option out there (Reed was ahead of him but he’s too small).

Hield comes off the bench and provides reliable scoring.

Then we have Nurse’s rotations. Maxey got four minutes off in the second quarter. Harris played all of the third and 38 minutes overall. Oubre played all of the fourth and 38 minutes overall. Team faded down the stretch and lost a very winnable game against a Clippers team who clearly didn’t give a shit most of the game (losing 80-20 balls due to no effort) but when the Clippers realized they had a chance Kawhi took over and that was that.

We should be able to beat this team but who knows. Important to wear Maxey out which means up the pace, get on him physically, protect the lane from his drives and make him play defense. He’ll get his points but make him work hard for it. Unfortunately the current version Garland is an ideal matchup for him because Darius will slow the ball down and is no physical presence. Really hope Donovan plays tonight.

It‘s a long way from November 21 when Darius & CPJ stepped up on a night when we were missing Donovan, Vert and Ice and somehow beat the Sixers in OT.

It’s a huge game. If we win, I’m convinced we pretty much lock at least not falling into the play-in. Lose this game and well……

Awesome report, Brew. Yeah, Maxey plays with fire and tremendous skill. I love his game.

The Cavs realize they need to win some more games and so far this year they've always bounced back strong after laying an egg, and boy did they lay one against Charlotte. Strus was unsparing in his criticism. "Nobody wanted to play defense tonight". Bickerstaff had some strong words in practice yesterday I'm sure.

But the Sixers are fighting to get out of the play-in tournament and just got screwed out of a win two nights ago so they will be fired up as well. I'm expecting two very motivated teams going at it tonight. Should be really entertaining.

Jarrett Allen is averaging 23.7 points and 10.7 rebounds against the Sixers in three games. In the two games without Embiid he's 19-for-29. He's too big for Reed to handle. The Cavs need to feed him tonight.

Darius is averaging 24.3 points and 8.7 assists in three games against the Sixers and Donovan got 36 points in his one game. When 38-year-old Kyle Lowry is in the game either Garland or Mitchell needs to blow by him and get to the paint, or just shoot 3's over his 6'0" frame if he sags off.

The Cavs are averaging 113.3 points per game against Philly this year so if they hit 113 tonight they should win. Philly is averaging just 103 ppg in their last 15 games.

In their three games against the Sixers the Cavs are averaging 30 assists. They need to keep that going.

Thanks Wham. I briefly considered selling my tickets so I could watch the Charlotte game live. Glad I didn’t. It was a blast booing James Harden along with all the angry Sixers fans. Entertaining game. Maxey is always worth the price of admission. Oubre though …

Game started 30 minutes after Cleveland. Watch the scoreboard all game and followed fourth quarter score on cell phone. 109-105 then the Hornets close on 13-2 run. Did not open this site when I got home. I have the game on DVR, couldn’t watch it.

Just would have been pissed watching the game so no loss not seeing it live even though I rarely miss a Cavaliers game.

The other thing about Clippers - Sixers is the reminder of TT’s comment that “Seeding doesn’t matter”. I don’t entirely agree with that but it was obvious the Clippers didn’t care about the game for much of it. And why should they? If I’m a Clippers fan I wouldn‘t care about seeding at all - I want that relatively old and injury prone team to be healthy and rested for the playoffs. As soon as Kawhi decided to play (with about five minutes left in the game) he was unstoppable. When he wants to be I still think he is the best wing in the game because he’s an absolute beast on both ends of the floor.

We have Donovan who’s very good but we just don’t have top end talent like the better teams in the game. Boston, Milwaukee and Philly were projected to be better than us before the season and that would have happened if Embiid wasn’t out for so long. Knicks have improved. I think we’re in a better position to compete than last year but in the playoffs it’s not enough, and it’s not just the coach and the fit issues on the roster. We’re still missing talent in key areas, notably wing.

Add Kawhi to this team and subtract Garland and Mobley. How good would we be?

I just don’t get the anger about our team. The guys have battled hard all year and overcome a lot of injuries to get to 44-29. I think the injuries, packed schedule and travel have worn us down. We all knew this would be a brutal month; we didn’t think we’d be missing Don, Max, Dean and Evan for most of it. It’s put a lot on Darius and Jarrett and the role players who stepped up (like Niang). I’m perfectly ok with people criticizing the coach or the players but I also think it’s fair to acknowledge they’ve given us a lot of great moments this season and shown a lot of heart and resilience. We shouldn’t give up on them when they are down.

I have no idea what will happen tonight, the next nine games overall or the first round. It’s up to the team now. I Do Not Accept the argument that JBB screwed this team up so badly they can’t win now. The guys are more than capable of beating Philly. They need to go out there and win this, then steel themselves for a brutal road trip. 3-3 over the next six games is doable. Let’s do this.

tl;dr Fuck JBB, just win baby

Time to get back on track tonight…

We were 35-16 going into the other home game vs Philly. They were missing Embiid, Harris, Melton and RoCo.

We were missing TT, CPJ—— and Dean Wade.

We couldn’t stop them from scoring. Oubre and Hield ran roughshod over us. That loss started a 9-13 record.

Playing some defense would be nice. But we’d better come ready to play. Otherwise the Sixers will beat us again.

Oh and Embiid is expected back soon. He’s traveling and practicing with the team. Expect to see him at RMF tonight, though not to play.

Philly Inquirer is pretty confident Sixers can win tonight based on the last two wins over us.

Just noticed Evan Mobley has 14 assists in the last two games. And in the three games since he returned he's 15-for-25 from the field (60%) and 3-for-6 on 3's.

Allen was 18-for-23 in the two games against Charlotte. He's showing a nice touch in the paint on those little push shots off passes from the baseline and I even saw him hit a floater off a one-legged takeoff which I don't think I've seen him do before.

Keep the ball moving until an opening develops, then attack the paint and dish to a big for the finish at the rim. LeVert has been doing a great job of that recently. Unfortunately he is listed as questionable for tonight due to wrist soreness. Caris has made just 6 of his last 27 shots. In March he is shooting 24.7% on 3's. I think the wrist has not been 100% for a while.

CPJ time?

<snip>

I couldn't have said it any better. I'll give us a 50-50 chance tonight. 116-108, Cavs
