2023 NFL Off Season

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Good luck with that though. Cincy has the tightest purse-strings in the league.
The Bengals may become a less successful version of the 80s Broncos.

The Broncos had Elway, a good D and... not much else in terms of real offensive firepower.

Most of the time.

In that AFC, that was good enough for a few Super Bowl appearances.

These days though, not so much.

They’ll kick the can down the road further than us and the Rams. They will be a force for 10 more years unfortunately.

Predicting that the cheapest, poorest owner in the NFL will outspend everyone else is quite a take.

Tell Jessie Bates about this. Since Cincinnati is going to pay to retain talent, he's wearing the wrong uniform

In order to “kick the can down the road” you need to restructure and give guys more money upfront. That is a very expensive strategy for an ownership group not known for their ability to spend.

Unless something changes financially, the Bengals should not have the luxury to do what the Browns are doing.

I was paranoid thinking Burrow would inexplicably take a paycut to give his billionaire owner some relief and allow them to keep more of their talent. Thankfully my concern was unwarranted. This extension is great news for the AFCN.

Yeah a lot of people miss the point of kicking the can down the road. Doing that always requires cash on hand immediately. The same with the guaranteed portion of a contract. The guaranteed portion of any NFL contract needs to be available to be paid the moment teh contract is signed. Even though it's spread out over the course of a few years all of the guaranteed money needs to be real and available.

So Mike Brown and CIN have $219M right now that they could give Joe Burrow but it will be spread out over 5 years. Every time a team restructures those players get their guaranteed money in a signing bonus and get paid immediately. It may not seem like a big deal but I don't think people realize how NFL owner money works. Yes these guys are rich but signing NFL contracts requires NFL owners to make the single biggest transactions that they'll probably ever make. How often do people think Jimmy Haslam signs a check for $8M dollars? This is why cheap owners is a real thing. Most of these guys have the money to pay say $20M in a single transaction but they usually do not sign checks that large in their other lines of work. That's why the owners always try to squeeze the players and owners like Dan Gilbert and Jimmy Haslam are very rare. They sign those big checks like a thousandaire would sign an everyday check for small transactions. Only theirs are for millions of dollars and you're giving it to players who you are invested in and hope that they live up to the billing.
