2023 NFL Off Season

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The Giants would like to keep Jones’ deal in the Kirk Cousins vicinity — an average of $35 million per year — but it is believed Jones is thinking Dak Prescott territory ($40 million per year) or even the Kyler Murray stratosphere (average of $46 million annually). That could lead to the tag for Jones, at least for now.

But that Watson contract...

But that Watson contract...
If only the Giants would have guaranteed Jones' fifth-year contract for $22m, they would have time to either negotiate a long-term extension or trade Jones for picks if they felt he wasn't worth the investment. Now the franchise tag is $8-10m more than his fifth-year option would have been and the clock starts earlier with the bad taste of already not having confidence in Jones last spring.

But they were worried about a Baker Mayfield situation if he fizzled out this year and stuck with the $22m contract next year.

So what should they pay a guy who threw for 200 yards and less than a touchdown a game? His TD rate was 28th, his Yards/Attempt tied for 23rd, Net Y/A 24th, yards/completion 27th with 44 sacks. Comparing Jones to Mayfield's lousy 2021, Jones only beats Mayfield out in interceptions and QBR. Comparing Jones to Mayfield's 2020, Baker wiped the floor with him. The Giants did too well winning nine games last year to sniff a QB at #25 unless they have a plan to trade Jones and package other picks to get into the teens if Richardson/Levis drop.

I hope this situation keeps getting messier.

Lamar is very well-liked around the league. If players around the NFL start to perceive that Baltimore is doing him dirty...or better yet, he drags them on his way out...I'd love a new negative narrative about the Ravens to blossom from this.

And the cherry on top is that it all would stem from the Browns' doing (Watson deal).

And he should be asking for this. Watson had over 20 accusations of sexual assault, hadn't played football in 2 years, was the leader of a terrible football team, and was about a toxic of an asset as you get, completely unrepentant. Lamar has laid it all out on the table, been MVP caliber, played through injuries, and been a model citizen and leader on a perennial contender. The Ravens have to accept the new reality for QBs and either shit or get off the pot with Jackson.

Lamar will be lucky if he plays three more full seasons in the NFL and I understand completely why the Ravens don't want to pay him. Lamar should still absolutely push for it though because if there is just one team willing to meet his demands it's absolutely worth it
