2023 Season | Series #19 | Guardians @ Twins | June 1-4, 2023

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
No runs scored tonight.

Rearranging the deck chairs made absolutely no difference.

Shut out for the seventh time in 57 games.

Team was so bad tonight they crashed the site.

A night like tonight has me conflicted. I've been a lot more critical of Tito this season than I have in seasons prior. Now, that being said... tonight was also a demonstration of why not everything this season falls solely on Tito and falls a lot more on the FO and the roster construction.

Tough to lose 1-0 and be 0-for-8 with RISP. They had chances but couldn't get the big hit at the right time. No runs against Ober in 13 innings this year. Like Mandy Bell said in the Apple TV booth, when they score runs the pitching fails and vice versa. That was the story in each of the first two games of this series. Two more one-run losses for baseball's second worst offense.

At least Civale looked good, although he got lucky with a two-out, two-on line drive to Freeman to end an inning. He also didn't have to worry about Buxton, Correa, or Joey Gallo. But you can't ask for more than five shutout innings in his first start in two months.

Freeman, Rocchio, and Brennan all got hits, two for Brennan. The kids are all right. Brennan has 9 hits in his last 16 at-bats, but just one RBI. Rocchio looked, uh, different, than Rosario at shortstop.

Hard to believe the Twins are just four games over .500 with that rotation (5th in ERA) and that closer, especially in baseball's weakest division. Their offense is average in wRC+ (102) but ranks 29th in "Clutch" rating, which is a formula having to do with how well they hit in "high leverage" situations. For example, they are 7-for-50 with the bases loaded (.140 BA). When their clutch hitting regresses to the mean they should be tough to beat. That rotation gives them a chance in every game.

Well of course F'en not when you still got Gallagher, Ramirez and Gimenez going 0-10. Rookies are not the problem, nor the solution. We cannot survive with Kwan hitting .261 with OPS+ of 96 as our leadoff hitter. Tito NEEDS to stop saying that he has to plug in our vets until they get things going and start kicking some ass. But, he is limited on what he can do as they are all sucking right now. Sorry, a few players have been half-way decent. But, if they know Rosario will keep on playing (like Shaw last year), no matter what he does, why do they even need to really show up? Nothing like having job security to know you don't have to put the cage work in.

Honestly, though, when you have a great pitcher coming at you, this line-up is not ready to handle it (may take advantage of Baltimore pen day but not ready for the playoffs. You need Freeman, Rocchio and Arias getting consistent at bats to have the confidence to stand in there versus the best-of-the-best.
