The Guardians' two All-Stars didn't exactly play like it as Jose was 0-for-5 and Clase allowed four runs, although there were two infield hits, a seeing-eye ground ball, and a bloop single.
But luck turned our way the next inning as Naylor chased a fastball at the letters and hit a ground ball that found a small hole to drive in two runs. I don't think either Morel or Naylor's ground balls up the middle would have been hits if the shift had not been eliminated.
Gimenez had a great game out of the leadoff spot with a two-run homer (on another fastball, this one shoulder height) and a double. Include the HBP and he was on three times.
Stephan has been looking really shaky lately. That eighth inning was a mess and he was lucky to get out of it with just one run allowed.
Leadoff walks will get you every time, even with a four-run lead in the 9th, right Clase?
Civale looked every bit the pitcher that had a brilliant first half in 2021 (10-2, 3.32 when he got hurt in late June). He was masterful in limiting the Cubs to one run in six innings. DLS dominated the 7th and then came the Stephan/Clase show, right after the Cubs announcers pointed out that the Guardians' bullpen had the second lowest ERA in the majors.
Rosario had a great at-bat leading off the 10th - an infield single on the 8th pitch of the at-bat where Amed laid off some pitches he usually chases.
Kind of an ugly win but we'll take it.
