Cross Watched some of the minors games, some random observations:
- Manzardo doesn't look as sure thing as some believe. He still got a lot of swing and miss and needs the reps.
- K. Watson got into an argument on opening day and had to be shoved aside by his teammates. His temper showing up again
- Brito isn't a good defense player. His ABs weren't great either, slow start.
- Walters has MLB stuff, like right now. The breaking ball got whiffs too, so it's not FB only
- Lake County bats looked weak. By far the best, mature ABs came from Guy Lipscomb. He might be a guy indeed. Plus plus speed, great approach and the frame to add power. All that playing CF. Watch alert.
- Mooney swing and missed a ton. Not as advertised.
- Schneemann is a ML ball player. Best quality of ABs for Columbus. Could be a late bloomer like Fry. I hope he gets his shot, could surprise. Super Util capable of playing pretty much everywhere except C
- RHP A. Peterson looks like a dude on the mound, great first start for LC. No velo readings, but fastball had some zip and excellent control and command. Would like to see him get tested in AA this season.
- I just don't see it with Messick. He's a bulldog and overachiever, but stuff looks pedestrian.
- Dion got extremely unlucky on some BIP, lots of weak contact. His FB only avg 89.6 mph (still higher for him), but it got 8 whiffs in 31 pitches, only one ball put in play under 80 EV. Don't let you get fooled by the surface stats. He's going to get starts in MLB this year, and I can see him being as good as Logan Allen was last year.
- Nic Enright is a ML bullpen ready option. Slight uptick on his rising FB, sitting 93-95 (93.9 avg) and cutter/change works off of it too. Throws strikes. He's ready.
- C. Cairo still gets overlooked. Some of the best swings and ABs I've seen from Akron hitters.
Overall, not impressed by the overall quality of ABs by the hitters. With most of the young hitters up now and the top hitters being DeLauter, Manzardo, Martinez and Brito, I'd consider trading most of the others (I'd keep C. Ingle and Lipscomb from the deep pile).
Pitching was a mixed bag. Carver and H. Stanley looked good, Nikhazy throws too many damn pitches, but keeps outperforming his peripherals. Mace could emerge, nice first start, but I'll believe it when he develops consistency
