A few thoughts..
1) The starters, not Vogt, are running the relievers into the ground.
2) If Kwan is out any length of time, we are in serious trouble...there's no sugar coating it.
3) I wouldn't have him leadoff, but I'd have Fry playing just about every day. He crushes LHP, and he is average vs RHP. I'd much rather see what we have in Fry first, before giving at bats to Rodriguez.
4) With Nails and Fry at 1B, we aren't exactly hurting there.
5) If not Cookie, who?
Curry has faced 98 batters in Columbus.
35 have gotten a hit, 10 have walked, 8 have homered. He's given up 3.43 HR/9 and his FIP is 8.21.
At the moment, we have NO depth in the rotation. We may have warm bodies, but no depth.
6) If Kwan has to go on the IL, it will be interesting to see who gets called up. The two names that everybody talks about are Manzardo and Rodriguez. But Schneemann has been so good at getting on base for so long that he makes some sense. The problem is that he hasn't played much in the outfield...and he isnt on the 40 man.
But his MiLB numbers look like those of another 27 yr old non prospect who got the call up in a desperate situation. Utility man Whit Merrifield was called up on May 18th 2016 to fill a black hole at 2B, and never looked back.
Few rebuttals ....
1) Yes, Cleveland relievers have top 5 innings in the league. Yet, some of the issue could also be how they are used ... like all the 1 innings for Gaddis when he could be going 2-3 (if stretched for that role). I thought this pen had a lot of potential to do multiple innings. And, with all the times relievers have to go up and down to warm-up (wear and tear and injury), there maybe less if they do 1 2-inning stint than 2 1-inning stints. Maybe Vogt takes that approach when Morgan and Hentges come back....
2) Losing a Kwan is a fact of life. I just pointed out again yesterday afternoon that our injuries over the past month won't save us from future injuries and that is the problem. Thus, hoping that injuries to relatively healthy KC/Det isn't the solution ... it is what already has been done - where we cannot call up a Martinez or Valera for Kwan. We can call up Man or Rod, but they aren't going into the lead-off slot which is our bigger need than OF.
3) There is a reason that Fry doesn't play everyday. It isn't just a manager that hates him. I am just waiting till pitchers get a full report as a 600+ BABip vs LHP is either All-Star level or not sustainable. If All-Star (or floor everyday regular), Vogt must then be an idiot for only playing him 3 times this past week (which is more than usual).
5) Curry really didn't have a ST ... do you really think he is that bad at AAA or is it that he was told to work on something that he wouldn't in the MLB? In his brief ST, he threw 10 innings and walked no one. In his 5 inning MLB this year, he walked 1. He walked 30 in 95 innings last year. But, now all of a sudden, he is wild (and giving up 8 HRs in AAA this year vs 12 all last season in MLB)?
Yes, they won't bring up Curry over Cookie because if they do before Williams and Cantillo come back, all they have is Oller and Dion for depth starters (with options)...
6) The key with who is called up (if Kwan goes on IL), is if Schneeman can go into the lead-off role (as you said a good walk rate -- .090 difference in OBP-BA). Right now, the best option you have for that role is a Laureano/Brennan combo (yack ...). Fry really isn't leadoff. Gimenez or Freeman could but you are messing with a lot of line-up changes (Fry can move to #2 hole). Schneeman has more innings in OF than Freeman, Arias and Rosario had. He has been working on it, nothing to worry about there for LF - will do better than Santana experiment. And, we do have a roster spot open with another coming in Avila with Hentges/Morgan sometime soon. This is the best shot for him to make our roster (it will say a lot what FO thinks of him -- is he doing better at AAA due to gaining ability or just his age - getting to that AAAA level player).
