#6: Barkevious Mingo, DE/OLB, LSU

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: #6: Browns take Barkevios Mingo

No, Sheard isn't going anywhere unless he is fails this season..

Horton wants an attacking defense and this is what this pick means... Sheard, Mingo and Kruger are going to be moved all over the place and used accordingly to get after the QB..

The Steelers D was all about creating pressure... They never had highly drafted, elite CBs... They never needed it...

Horton also said it's hard for a CB to start in his scheme, they want to develop them...

Re: #6: Browns take Barkevios Mingo

Not when the QBs face is being smashed into the turf...

A guy on a quick curl or slant, especially if your secondary isn't decent, will be open before that....

Again, I don't hate the pick. I just hope we have an actual plan.

But they had capable CBs. Joe is awesome but we don't have much else at CB and FS scares me.

Its not like this is our only pick. I like Mingo. Our front seven has so much potential!

You can't make picks based off solely need.

They need pass rush, they need corners, they need a guard and a QB. You take the guy who you feel is the best football player at one of those positions.

Just can't see them not addressing the secondary, but there are needs everywhere and you just draft the best player you can.

Re: #6: Browns take Barkevios Mingo

The Browns can get a starting CB in the 3rd and a FS in 4th or 5th round...

This is a deep CB and FS draft..

If not there's still veterans like Quentin Jammer out there..

I'm with you. And I'd feel better if I trusted the guys in charge, but I don't.

And I would, and hopefully will, feel more comfortable when we do any of those things.

Re: #6: Browns take Barkevios Mingo

Ray Horton is fully chubbed right now.

Having Sheard, Kruger and Mingo as pass rushing options. You can move those guys all over pre-snap and confuse offenses. To say nothing that they have a pretty good mix of defensive lineman as well.

Buster Skrine, Trevin Wade or someone else have to elevate their game.

They've got a ton to prove. I think tonight was a step in the right direction as far as taking high ceiling talent, now lets just pray that they can develop him.

Re: #6: Browns take Barkevios Mingo

Ok, I'm the advanced stats guy so I can't help but to look at this way...I was originally highly skeptical of Mingo, seemed like a high bust potential kind of pick, then I read this at Football Outsiders:

Barkevious Mingo

Last week, Matt Waldman covered both Mingo and Dion Jordan in his Futures column. Based on his scouting, he noted that Jordan was close to a sure thing with all-around talent at the outside linebacker position, while Mingo was a bit more of a high-risk, high-reward draft pick because his on-field technique doesn't quite match his athleticism and explosiveness.

Ironically, SackSEER has the exact opposite opinion. When it comes strictly to sack production, SackSEER sees Jordan as a high-risk, high-reward draft pick whose on-field production in college never quite matched his measurables, while Mingo is SackSEER's number-one edge rusher prospect for 2013. Mingo outrates Jordan in every single one of the elements in SackSEER, both the Combine drills and the college production measures.
Mingo is somewhat analogous to Jevon Kearse. Like Kearse coming out of Florida, Mingo has outstanding athleticism and a lot of passes defensed. Mingo’s workouts were consistently excellent -— his forty-yard dash, vertical jump, broad jump, and three cone were all well above average for the position. As was also the case with Kearse, Mingo has only lukewarm sack production. Some contend that Mingo’s production dropped this year because he was asked to rush the passer much less than in seasons past. Edge rushers with less production than Mingo have gone on to be stars at the position, so a team selecting Mingo -— even with a fairly high draft pick -— is making a solid gamble.

FWIW, that 94.6% SackSEER rating incredibly high and much better than Dion Jordan's or Ansah's. So maybe it will work out.....

Re: #6: Browns take Barkevios Mingo

So is he a DE or OLB?

Re: #6: Browns take Barkevios Mingo

Just because it was Heckert who said pass rusher was a premium position in the draft doesn't mean it's exclusive to him. Like the pick and this is finally a potent front 7

Re: #6: Browns take Barkevios Mingo

Once you have your franchise QB, the priorities are:

1. Protect your QB
2. GET TO THE QB!!!

We just picked this year's Bruce Irvin. Guy EXPLODES off the line. We're making the transition to the 3-4, and wouldn't you know it, we're stacked on the line and at outside LB...two of the most important positions for the defense.

Kruger, Sheard, Groves, Mingo???? What's not to like?
