AFC Divisional Playoffs - Beat the Chiefs

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Joseph is our biggest and most physical DB. He's the kind of DB that you have to put on Kelce to get physical with him. I wouldn't have Ward travel with Kelce because that would be a waste. he'd be more useful sticking with Hill. Hill is a tough cover but I would make Ward ravel with Hill all game so at least every time Mahomes throws to Hill our best DB will be on him.
Joseph is physical in the run game but a pretty big liability in coverage. If the game plan is a bunch of Cover 1 with Joseph on Kelce he will eat us alive.

Interesting tidbits on the linebackers... There were 90 total plays for the defense (huge number, BTW) and Phillips led the team with 50.

B.J. Goodson, after missing the past two games, played 47 snaps. He also dealt with a shoulder injury during the game. Goodson also received a 79.8 PFF grade yesterday leading the defense. Hopefully he shakes it off for the Chiefs.

The idea is for Joseph to get physical with Kelce off the line to disrupt him from running free. Not for Joseph to lock him down. Joseph is not a strong cover guy but we don't have anyone who is physical enough and good enough in coverage to stick with Kelce like that. Most teams don't and that's why he's the best TE in the league.

I watch teams every week make a mistake and let Kelce run free. KC runs a lot of short stuff with him at the LOS or he's just running free up the seams. We need to bump his ass and force him off his routes.

I'd rather do that then play that conservative ass zone all game and hope for turnovers.

I think if we can Ward back and our O-Line is healthy for the game I think we can be competitive. It would also help if we can have a full week of practice to prep and prepare for KC. It is going to be a high scoring game, I am hopeful that the O-Line is healthy as I think an aggressive Baker could do some damage to that defense.

Kelce is going to have to be defended by everyone. Joseph simply isn't big enough to hang with Kelce.

This is the type of game where I could see Mack (I know) get more snaps than normal because he is better against the pass than other options at LB. Just pray he doesn't have to make an open field tackle on the edges.

Mack is our fastest LB isn't he?

They are both about the same speed, but technically Mack Wilson ran a bit faster then Phillips

From what I found Wilson didn't run at the combine. Phillips ran 4.66 and Takitaki ran 4.63.

I would love to add a 4.5 type linebacker in the offseason.

Kelce is pretty damn near match up proof - he's just that talented. You got to get physical with him at the line and just try to tire him out over a game and hope he drops some gimmes.

Stick Joseph on Kelce. Stick Ward on Hill. Let our pass rush pin their ears back. Their running game is not a threat at all much like PIT.
This is the way. Garrett wont need to bend as much with the depth at which Mahomes drops back. He can rely on pure speed and get to him.

Keep in mind, any QB is always one hit away from being out. We will be hitting him a lot.

I guess my point is that we've had capable guys all year, not necessarily the last few weeks - should've made that clearer - and I think our defense has underperformed all year.

I was happy to see Woods draw up some different blitzes last night and perhaps he's kept some stuff close to the vest but overall, I just haven't been impressed with him this year. Just has felt very vanilla like we believe these "undermanned" excuses and just try to play conservative "bend don't break" defense when I think we have some thumpers on that side of the ball.

Perhaps it's because we've seemingly nailed it with our offensive coaches and I am giving him an unfair shake.
We're the #12 defense in the league in yards per play this season.

We're the #20 defense in points allowed

We're the #9 defense in rushing yards allowed

We're the #12 defense in rushing yards allowed per attempt

We're the #22 defense in passing yards allowed

We're the #16 defense in passing yards allowed per attempt.

With all the injuries, I think those are pretty good numbers. But I also think that a vanilla scheme that mixes it up to catch QB's off guards and keep them on their toes is the best way to play defense in the NFL. You can't blitz and bring the house anymore. You get killed by any good QB doing that.

I could also say those numbers are skewed by the garbage time comebacks of Dallas and Tennessee, but meh. Every team has games like that. It'd be dishonest of me to use that argument without adjusting for other teams as well. I could also say the entire argument I've made so far is shit because it doesn't adjust for the strength of the offenses we played against.

I think you're right in that I don't think Woods is as good as Stefanski/AVP/Callahan are on offense. But I think he's competent and can be good. This offseason, Berry focused on giving Stefanski the tools he required on offense to succeed. I expect we'll see a similar focus on the defense next year.

Is there some other Karl Joseph you're talking about?
