Austin Carr is Too Awesome and is the Best!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Some good highlights of a hot Campy Russell from the '70s here. A bit after the 3:00 mark you can see Austin Carr hit a smooth foul line jumper. I had forgotten how skinny NBA players were back then.

Jim Chones with a double-double!

Amazing. I've never seen that video, but I remember listening to this with Joe Tait on the radio. Campy had 35, but Bob Lanier had 36 and shot just as well, pulling the game out for Detroit. I was sad about the loss, but proud of Campy. Campy's shot was unorthodox; the ball went behind his head, and he released it above his head. He was almost impossible to block. The ball had no or little spin and landed very softly.

What jumps out to me in that video is the lack of carrying/traveling while dribbling compared to the modern game. Everyone talks about the incredible ball handlers in today's game, but the game was called so differently that comparing ball-handling skill is virtually impossible.

You can see what impact that has on the offense as a whole. Ballhandlers don't/can't have nearly the same kind of kinetic impact on the defenses as they do nowadays, which forces a lot more jump shots.

Austin should be the only one calling games. Such bizarreness to use this rotation of commentators. I understand giving other legends things to do, but I loved ac calling games.
Likely age related. Austin is 73…the travel schedule might be a bit rough.

Yes. I'd prefer this style of play. I'd return to the old calls on traveling and carrying in a second.

Most people don’t remember that Brad did a nice amount of games alongside Michael Reghi for the 1997-98 Cavaliers team with Kemp and Z and the rookies….

I remember coming home after mollywhopping some weak ass opponent when I was with the 1997-98 Armco Heating & Cooling Hornets and then rewinding my freshly recorded VHS and watching the game….

meh.. I'm ready to move on from AC as color commentator for Brad. Let AC and Campy provide that post game/pre-game thing.

When Fratello is on...I turn the sound down. He's completely unlistenable. Always makes me happy when Austin is around.

It's pretty disrespectful. If you're not a fan of the job he does than just be real and fire him and replace him. But this is nonsense.

I don't read any disrespect towards AC by having Fratello or Daugherty do games. Cavs love him and will likely always have a place for him. He is 74, though, so having an exit strategy for all parties makes sense.
