The Athletic's Joe Person reports the Panthers don't intend to trade Sam Darnold following Wednesday's acquisition of Baker Mayfield, and they "envision" a training camp competition for the starting job.
Like Mayfield's deal with the Browns, Darnold's $18.86 million salary for 2022 is guaranteed, so no team is trading for that contract unless serious changes were made to it. While the Panthers are putting it out there that they expect a camp battle between the two 2018 top-three draft picks, it would be a colossal upset if Mayfield isn't under center come Week 1. The Panthers wouldn't have spent all this time searching for quarterbacks if they were comfortable with Darnold as the starter.
