Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I know... I know... ESPN is complete shit, but my god were the takes this evening bad.

I wasn’t happy when we drafted him. I bought his jersey after he led us to a playoff win. And then he screwed me over.

Thanks for taking us to a playoff win. You were average and that was better than we have had. We all wish it would have worked our differently. Good luck in the NFC.

I always listen to Sirius NBA radio but put on NFL radio on the drive home an hour ago instead. First up was a Kevin Stefanski promo of the network: “ This is Kevin Stefanski of the Cleveland Browns …” then you hear the radio call “Mayfield under center … steps back to pass … throws … caught … Touchdown!”. Brutal.

The Athletic's Joe Person reports the Panthers don't intend to trade Sam Darnold following Wednesday's acquisition of Baker Mayfield, and they "envision" a training camp competition for the starting job.

Like Mayfield's deal with the Browns, Darnold's $18.86 million salary for 2022 is guaranteed, so no team is trading for that contract unless serious changes were made to it. While the Panthers are putting it out there that they expect a camp battle between the two 2018 top-three draft picks, it would be a colossal upset if Mayfield isn't under center come Week 1. The Panthers wouldn't have spent all this time searching for quarterbacks if they were comfortable with Darnold as the starter.

If he’s starting for them that’s basically a given for a QB.

Hard to say. I could envision a scenario where Rhule gets canned mid season and the team just opts to tank. Looking at their schedule leading up to their bye in week 13, it’s not that easy:

1. Browns
2. @Giants
3. NO
4. AZ
5. SF
6. @Rams
7. TB
8. @ATL
9. @CIN
10. ATL
11. @Bal
12. Den

Their season could spiral out of control real quick if they aren’t like 2-1 after the first three weeks. Atlanta’s going to suck, but not too many easy games on that schedule. Week 4-7 is pretty damn brutal having to face what will likely be 4 top-10 defenses in-a-row. Baker probably doesn’t make it out of that stretch alive.

So definitely your fault, when it's all said and done?

I was also a Baker skeptic during the draft. I also didn't have a lot of faith in Lamar Jackson. The guy who pulled the trigger isn't in Cleveland anymore. The team does have a solid plan in place at QB and most NFL can't say the same.
