Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Honestly, I don’t really have anything against Baker, but I’m glad we won just so I don’t have to listen to every media source taking victory laps all week over this game.
Agreed. There is no doubt people wanted Baker to win to write those types of articles.

You know what’s weird? I feel like Baker succeeding or failing has less to do with Baker and more how creative his offensive coaching staff puts him in positions to succeed. If Baker is your QB, you can’t make him a drop back pocket QB, otherwise you’ll get what happened in the 1st half.

You need to be able to scheme roll-outs and bootlegs and a steady diet of play action. He needs room to make big throws, that’s where he’s best. That’s also why he’s so inconsistent.

He’s a flawed player with notable limitations, but he has enough talent where a creative OC can try to work around them.

I still think you can win with Baker Mayfield at QB, it just isn’t easy.

I think most QBs need the right OC to maximize their ceiling and minimize their flaws but I do agree that it seems like a bigger need for Baker. I do think Carolina has some nice playmakers to build out an offense to suit Baker. Robbie Anderson should be a good deep threat and McCaffrey should be dynamic RB, it's basically all the intermediate routes they need to build up.

The other thing they said yesterday is that Baker had worked to change his throwing motion in the offseason. I'm not sure that is going to make it easier for an OC to scheme around his flaws. To me, it look like he tighten everything up and the result was a lower release point. For a smaller QB, he needs to have a higher release point if he is going to operate from the pocket at all.

I'm sure that alot of the batted balls came from the browns defense knowing Baker's preferred passing lanes and his tendencies but I do have to wonder what factor his new throwing mechanics played into it.

This was a strange column. I think Baker's mom wrote it.

I think the reality is the Browns are a hated team right now. That isn’t going away anytime soon. People are going to look for any reason to take shots at them. There is nothing the national media wanted more than the Browns to lose and then have an opportunity to write articles bashing them. It will only get worse when Watson returns. They will look for any opportunity to bash his performance as well.

I do think Carolina has a nice group of weapons, but I think CMC is going to get dramatically under-utilized as a WR compared to years past. Baker struggles in the short-to-intermediate game, which is right where McCaffery needs the ball.

If they can’t find a way to win a game in the next two weeks things are going to get ugly. They play Giants and Saints, then go Cards, 49ers, Rams, Bucs.

I do think for McCaffery to be utilized like he did before, they need to open up the intermediate to long game first. Their coaching staff will need to figure out how they can use the rest of their receiving corp in that 15 yard range that Baker seems to be best at so teams don't concentrate in that range where McCaffery is most effective.

I cannot wait for Baker to be demoted to a career clip board holder.

The batted passes are a problem but his throwing mechanics did look very sharp when no one was in front of him.:chuckle:

The big issue I saw was that interception overthrow. Classic Baker through and through. He saw the pressure coming, shuffled his feet, and then launched the ball 7 yards past the receiver. He's not an starting QB in the NFL as long as he keeps doing that.

Baker Mayfield about to be dead last in QBR after two weeks makes me a happy camper. I don’t see him keeping the starting job if he continues to play the way he has.

He's just not that good and his talent is backup quality.

Unfortunately, he believes he's a starter so his attitude will never be a good fit for what his role (backup QB) should be.

Brissett is better.

Fuck losing to the Jets, not having to watch Baker “Mediocre” Mayfield as our long term QB makes me happy.

Fields is really a tragedy of a QB. I’m sure you can find a post from me in last year’s season thread declaring him a lost cause but he is validating it this year. Bears absolutely blew it

Usually you don’t want to call it so early but sometimes you just see everything you need to see

I watched that Carolina-NYG game. He looked roughly the same way that he did against the Browns, except less passes batted down and more off target. He doesn't look like a starter at all, anymore.

I think my biggest problem is that the Bears call plays as if he's disposable. Nothing they have done since drafting Fields was done to support him.

It will be interesting to see if Stroud bucks the trend, but OSU qbs in generally have not performed well in the pro’s. My theory being they have difficulty making adjustments at the next level because of the WR talent they’ve been throwing to. I think OSU WRs, RBs, and OL have been so good over the last 5-10 years that they’ve artificially elevated the QBs by default. Just think about who these guys have been throwing to recently:

Chris Olave
Garrett Wilson
Michael Thomas
Curtis Samuel
Paris Campbell
Terry McLaurin

Plus a couple on PS squads, and a couple that will get drafted this year. That’s not even going back that far. Things are pretty easy for a college QB when you have that many future NFL guys to throw to. Someone is always open.
