Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
There's an alternative reality where Baker gets season-ending shoulder surgery after like week 3 of the 2021 season and the Browns sign him to a team-friendlyish contract extension that offseason and he's still starting for the team to this day.
Motherfucker should have opted for surgery instead of trying to tough it out. I cannot believe people blamed the team for that situation.

He never was going to. He wanted in on the big QB money contracts that were being handed out, and he wouldn't have gotten it if he got surgery then. He gambled and lost.

Until Baker proves he's good enough to win a SB; I still don't see the big deal. Most his big performances are coming against bad-to-average teams right now.

This feels like the same trap his rookie year. Where he'd put up monster games, against average to subpar teams, then would come back falling hard to earth against the best teams.

I'm not trying to piss on what he's done. I never thought he wasn't a starting QB. And I think he's having a pro bowl season even.

But I still don't trust him, when you need these type of performances against the best when it matters most.

Baker is a good QB, I don't think that should be a big shocker to anyone. He's definitely hot right now. Baker can get cold too, and play very wreckless football.

Do I miss him? No... But good for him.

Curious to see how the rest of the league feels about Baker this offseason if TB doesn’t franchise him. I still have a tough time believing a NFL Team offers him more than a 1 year contract.

I feel someone will get desperate

Teams get desperate, a lot of bad starting QBs in the league. I've read before these last two games, Tampa Bay wasn't exactly feeling that much love towards Baker going forward.

I think a lot will depend on what he does in the post-season. I got to think they'll bring him back? What else do they have?

They drafted Trask, but I'm not sure they're really high on him. I never like being in this territory. Where the guy is too good to give up on, and probably not good enough to win you a SB. Unless you have a historically GREAT team.

I guess I can't say you could never win a SB with him, but a lot would have to go right. The probability to me isn't very high. That's why I'm cool with what we did.

Big takeaway. Tampa Bay has great weapons, a very good line (no running game TBF), and a pretty damn good defense. And they're just 8-7. And they're singing praises for Baker. Last two games he has been great, no question.

That's how low the bar was for him. He's definitely proven he can start in the league. Whether he can be a franchise QB, that is a completely different story. Still hasn't done enough to prove that IMO.

Baker is playing better than he did in 2020 while many here wrote him off for good.

At the end of the day, good for him. I'll root for him to keep playing well.

Can you win it all with Baker? I'm not sure, it's unlikely unless you have a stacked team elsewhere.

Is he still a fun and exciting player to watch? I think so.

Have no ill will towards him and hope he does well. He'll clearly be starting somewhere the next couple years.

Baker is playing very well in a weak division in a system with above average weapons that suits his strengths. Baker and TB would both be smart to agree to a competitive cap figure contract between Jimmy G's 3 year/$75m and Tannehill's 4 yea//$118m to be able to have the opportunity to re-sign Mike Evans and extend Godwin after '24.

Without that, Baker is '22 Carolina Baker with teams double-teaming Godwin next year unless the Bucs go WR in the 1st round of the draft or sign a decent free agent WR.

If Baker doesn't re-sign with TB the other options where he could step into a situation with similar offensive weapons and succeed are Minnesota if Cousins' injury derails him, Washington and Pittsburgh.

People here will just look for any reason to knock this dude down. He’s been absolutely electric this year.

Hats off to him.

He’s going to get a contract in the Geno Smith/Daniel Jones range almost assuredly, right?
