Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I don’t even know where to begin with the sheer amount of problems everyone in Baker Mayfield’s sphere would have/had if he was “quite literally” a roller coaster ride.

Could start with his mother trying to safely carry him inside the womb.

Then I suppose we can imagine the impracticality of having a literal roller coaster playing Quarterback at any level of football. The setup alone…

I don't dislike Baker but let's not go overboard - by last night, Philly was a mess and playing the worst football of any team in the playoffs. No AJ Brown and Hurts was dinged up as well.

Tampa also went 9-8 (4-2 in the division; 5-6 outside of the division) to win the worst division in football on a tiebreaker - that is not a team on the cusp of Super Bowl contention.

And just about all of the metrics and stats (tradition and advanced) suggest that Baker had an, at best, average 2023 season compared to all other QBs in the league.

Despite last night's win, I'd feel very queasy about giving him a mega-contract this offseason.

To your point Cement, I did see a graphic that Baker had his best season statistically. So, if anyone feels that that one season he did well for us and led us to the playoffs - well, he did better than that in TB this season.

He came in on a prove it contract and did just that. I believe we would have had a shot with Baker on this Browns team. The Eagles were a powerhouse until the 2nd half of the season. The playoffs this year are as wide open as ever. Average QB play would have really helped, and a healthy Chubb with Baker's play-action ability and the D we had - that is a recipe for success. One of the concerns with Baker was turnovers - well, we led the league this year and still made the playoffs.

Seemingly, if you have an average QB, the way to win is with a dominant D, solid OL and a strong running attack. The teams with top QBs can get away with deficiencies elsewhere, as these studs make up for it.

Overboard? Is that a pirate ship joke?

Baker has had 8 head coaches in 6 seasons. Impossible to label him a bottom half QB when he has the least amount of consistency than likely any NFL player over that span.

Bottom line, gotta give the guy credit.
Going to agree to disagree here, I absolutely think you can label him a bottom half QB. Baker has had tremendous coaching change around him, no one can deny that. However; that's not the reason he doesn't play anywhere close to a #1 overall pick. He's ok, he's not bad but he's not all that good either. He's played in 89 out of a possible 98 games and started all but 3 of those games. He's had a lot of opportunities to prove what kind of player he is, and frankly, he's a bottom half of the league starter, but still a starter.

He doesn't have any dominant physical attributes. He's not tall, 6'0. He's not fast, 4.84 40 time.
He has a strong arm but it's not all that accurate.
Completion % 24th on average
2023: 19th
2022: 32nd
2021: 24th
2020: 30th
2019: 14th
2018: 24th

He turns the ball over. He's in the top half of the league in INTs most every year- 12th most turnovers on average
2023: 13th
2022: 22nd (10 starts)
2021: 11th
2020: 21st
2019: 2nd
2018: 5th

His average Quarterback Rating is about 22nd in the league
2023: 12th
2022: 30th
2021: 24th
2020: 15th
2019: 31st
2018: 19th

He can do some things and win you a few games but he's not going to be that long term starter you want leading your team. It isn't the coaching change, in fact, you can make an argument that if he was better, his teams would have been better and he wouldn't have had so many coaching changes.

Good for Baker. I’ve got nothing against the guy and hope he does well. He’s a below average starter, 20-25th best starting QB but he’s a starting QB.
This year he ranks as the 12th best quarterback and is top 10 in a few categories.
