Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
RG3 had a great rookie season. Him and Baker have very similar systems, styles and body types/appearances.
Is this sarcasm? Because, no. RGIII was a world-class track athlete who needed to play outside of the pocket to make things happen. Not sure I see much similarity, if any.

At this point you have to throw whatever it takes at Washington to get Trent Williams and then see what you have..

Throwing away "whatever it takes" in draft capital for a team that can't compete seems less than prudent.

Williams would be a nice piece, as I've said. But this team's problems are wide and deep, and don't begin with the LT.

At this point I think you'd have to be prepared to let go of, at minimum, a 1st and a 2nd, as well as absorbing that money.

That's just a lot. Robinson was abused by Bosa last night, but I don't think he was necessarily a problem in Weeks 1-4, when he wasn't kicking defensive players

I broke this down for the beginning of the season but for the most part successful rookie QBs show very little improvement from season 1 to season 2. Either in overall stats or wins as a team. There were a couple of exceptions that brought the numbers up but for the most part that seem to trend out.

My guess is that the primary jump and success happens between years 2 and 3.

That said Baker needs to play better

Again, i'm new to the NFL so my question is Williams that good to warrant a first and second? Also even if we do offer it, does it move the needle for this team whose preparation looks like shitty.

I mean, the team look unprepared last night and that thing can't be fix by any trade.

how can we not compete?

we’re very clearly the team to beat in the AFC North after last week.

Compete in what way?

For the Super Bowl? Or for the division. Because I certainly think we can compete for the division. And for me that’s enough to be hopeful.

I say this as someone who wouldn’t be after Williams at the price it would take

Based on age and injury history? No, not worth both of those picks. But is he worth a high pick? Probably.

For me, it's less about the effect he'd have on the actual O-Line performance and more about what it would do for Baker's psyche.

Let's not mince words - the line has sucked... But let's also acknowledge that Baker is playing scared, even looking shell shocked at times. He's being hit and forced from the pocket far too frequently but he's also breaking clean pockets, rushing throws, overthrowing receivers, and missing reads.

To me, this looks to be just as much a mental hurdle for Baker as it is tangible play by the O-line. He doesn't trust the line even when the protection holds and his mechanics have completely disappeared in those situations.

They need to go back to basics, work on his mechanics, while also addressing the O-line personnel. They need to tackle both problems or this will not be fixed. They need to do so before we invite irreversible damage to Baker's mechanics, psyche, and awareness.

We know he has the skills, vision, and accuracy to play at this level but we also know that those traits can be fleeting for a QB if coaching and protection are neglected.

Any 8-8 team can compete in this division.

The Ravens have very little supporting cast around their young franchise QB, their defense is leaving quite a bit to be desired.

Steelers and Bengals are dead in the water.

Giving "whatever it takes" for a team that isn't truly ready to compete beyond this albatross of a division. If that makes it more clear.

Trent Williams doesn't make this team a contender for anything beyond a 9-7 finish right now. This team needs to stop throwing draft capital at every problem and thinking its a solution.

I know we all hate Tony Grossi but he just said on the radio that pre-game he made a comment to John Dorsey and he said Dorsey was not in a good mood and not having it. He said something was up pre-game and maybe he knew something bad was going to happen...

Every gambling follow I tail on Twitter or any site jumped on the 49ers late.

Almost unanimously. Best Bets actually posted a 49ers -12.5 play telling his subscribers to buy up the line and making more money.

Baker playing hurt? Don't want to excuse away his awful play on a phantom injury but it's a fair question considering this was just a month ago and it hasn't been spoken of since:

Unfortunately a hand injury wouldn't explain breaking clean pockets and missing and/or opting not to throw to open receivers....

seems odd that the Browns would list every ache and pain on the injury report and not this.
