Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I can't think of a situation in the NFL in which a QB played as well as Baker did as a rookie and then didn't amount to anything afterward for any reason other than injuries or maybe off-the-field problems. Flash-in-the-pans happen in baseball but generally not in football, at least not at the QB position. I won't dispute that he's been lousy so far this season, but long term Baker will be fine. We all know he can play because we've seen it. For the time being we just need to ride out this shitshow for as long as it lasts.
Ehh, Derek Carr and Blake Bortles both had really good seasons early in their careers.

Baker’s going to be a good NFL QB. The question is if he’ll be a system QB who can only excel at quick passes or a legitimate pro-bowler. This season looks like it may be the former, but we’ve got another 1.5 years before we really know.

Not his rookie year but Josh Freeman from Tampa comes to mind. Statistically his sophomore season was pretty similar to Bakers rookie year

Well, Derek Carr is pretty good and as for Bortles, he still threw 18 picks and completed only about 58 percent of his attempts even in his "career" year. I'm just saying Baker isn't just going to wash out, which we seem to be in agreement on. We're also in agreement on the concern over what exactly his ceiling is as a player. Before the season I thought he was potentially an MVP-caliber player. Needless to say I'm not so sure about that now.

RG3 had a great rookie season. Him and Baker have very similar systems, styles and body types/appearances.

They also both played for Hue who could feel the earth moving beneath his feet when RG3 practiced for him.

RG3 got hurt.

....RG3 is a similar style?

The hell?

Does anyone feel like Baker's arm/should is possibly injured? I remember in Week 1 after that safety he basically couldn't move his right arm and then last night after a big sack I noticed the same exact thing. Walking with a normal stride, but right arm not moving at all. I really think he might have some type of injury that allows him to make short-intermediate throws, but I don't think he can load up comfortably. How many passes this year have gone even 25 yards through the air? Last year he was ripping them constantly and started off almost every game with a bomb.

I'm hesitant to give him any benefit of the doubt because of his demeanor and attitude, but I really think there might be something there.

If you're from Cleveland and didn't attend OSU, you should be a Browns fan first and you certainly shouldn't be fawning over Bosa's forced, cringey antics. I'm all for competition and rubbing it in your opponent's face but he's just awkward and douchey.

Granted, I say this as somebody who loathes Ohio State but I would say the same thing about 90% of Mayfield's on-field antics, too.

Baker hasn't been as sharp this year and has his own issues but I don't think the coaching staff has done many favors to this team either. You could tell last night the Browns were outcoached and outclassed. This teams fails as the small stuff and cannot major in the minor. Below is a small excerpt from Lloyd's piece from the game:

It’s fair to wonder why Callaway wasn’t moved to the slot during the preseason since Beckham’s arrival is what bumped him off the X in the first place. Beckham was acquired in March. The Browns knew this was coming. I won’t pretend that I watched every snap of training camp and the preseason, but my colleague Zac Jackson basically did. He insists he never saw Callaway lined up in the slot at all while he was watching in July and August.

We know Callaway isn't reliable on or off the field but why would you depend on this game and change his position the week of the game? He came into camp out of shape and had a high ankle sprain. The guy isn't the brightest bulb. There seems to be just a general lack of detail with Kitchens, we are the most penalized team in the NFL. It's early and I am overreacting but I would love to see what Matt Campbell could do with this bunch....

Why are you guys worried about Nick Bosa? Who gives a shit about him?

Baker has been trash outside of 1 game this season. That is a major problem. He had plenty of opportunities for success last night and just flat out sucked.

Frankly, nothing else matters right now.

I think, and hope, that the root cause of all of this is lack of trust. It's a scary proposition that could lead to a lost season, but it's far less scary than the thoughts about Baker's long term future that are creeping into all of our heads right now.

Lack of trust between Baker and his o-line. Lack of trust between Freddie and the o-line. Lack of trust between Baker and Freddie with the playcalling due to the o-line. Lack of trust/chemistry between Baker and his receivers.

Baker has been up and down and it seems to be due to lack of trust in his o-line. When he forces himself to trust the o-line, we've seen some good things happen......until they prove to him why they were unworthy of his trust in the first place.

I hope to God we are able to address the o-line before Baker becomes damaged goods mentally and physically. He is missing open receivers because he is so preoccupied making sure the o-line doesn't get him killed, even on plays where the pass protection holds up alright. But that's the thing...their play is so inconsistent that he's thinking about it constantly and it's fucking everything up.

I fear this season may be lost because of the o-line and Baker's (understandable, but disappointing) lack of trust in them. I'm coming to grips with the thought of this season being a lost cause, rollercoaster ride of inconsistency...I'm officially far more concerned about the long term effects this shit show may cause.

We need to do everything in our power to contain the damage to the 2019 season and not beyond.

Honestly I’m not getting the play calling argument on this one

The league average yardage separation for a WR is 2.83 yards of separation. Here’s how we did last night:

Beckham: 4.22 yards
Demetrius Harris: 4.12 yards
Bum ass Callaway: 3.23 yards
Juice: 2.89 yards
Ratley: 2.02 yards

Guys were wide fucking open all game buddy boy just couldn’t hit them

2 QBs in the NFL have taken longer to throw than Baker on the season

1. Kirk Cousins 3.07
2. Ryan Fitzpatrick: 2.97
3. Baker: 2.96

Guys are getting separation and Baker is holding the ball. The Oline hasn’t been ideal and Freddie does some dumb shit, but Buddy Boy has to wake up

I'm fairly new to the NFL but i am pretty sure when snubbing someone's handshake is pretty disrespectful and childish especially if the guy hasn't done anything bad at you.

I love his arrogance sometimes but he needs to back it up and place it appropriately.

He got incredibly pissed in college when Kansas did the same thing to him.

It's a bitch move and fucking pisses me off that he did that trash. Giving the other team motivation like that was simply stupid.
