Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
He does look a bit fatter this year for whatever reason. He did get married this off-season but still frustrating. Granted, this is completely just an eye test thing and should have little effect on his decision-making in the pocket and arm accuracy but perhaps it illustrates that not enough work was put in this off-season, which is troubling if that's the case.

Not to get too in to the weeds here but it looks like he's wearing a different flak jacket this season, so that may be why he looks a little heavier.

Last year, he was wearing a pro combat style undershirt for his ribs with a hard shell back flap for his lower back. This year, it looks like he's wearing much heavier rib protection, for whatever reason.

My goodness... How does Baker not even look at OBJ there???

It seems to me either,

A) Baker just flat out sucks at this point

or

B) Baker doesn't want OBJ to shine too bright on "his" team...

i know, i know.. people will say B is crazy, but we're talking about athletes... they have pretty big egos, puffed up with pride.. its what drove them to this point in their life to begin with.

A) is an overreaction, but he's definitley played very poorly as a whole this year.

B) is one of the worst takes I've read this week.

He missed the read. I think it's really that simple.

Oh i think we know the reason... traumatized by too many hits in preseason.

A) "at THIS point" -- i think its safe to say plainly, Baker sucks lol the way he has been playing, he sucks. nobody has confidence in him. not even his own receivers have confidence that he will find them even if they are wide open. this has been a pretty consistent thing this year.. dude misses wide open guys and runs out of the pocket with great protection.. or just sprints to the sideline when all he has to do is take 2 steps up or to the left or right and reset.. if you didnt know Baker played last season, just watching this year, you would say he sucks. because he does lol i hope he snaps out of it though. we seen what hes capable of.

B) yeah im aware its a pretty bad take.. but its not exactly impossible. you dont know whats in that mans heart.. Hes playing terrible and he knows it... why let the biggest name shine on you on your own team. pride is a funny thing, my friend.. dont underestimate it. you can call it "the worst take", but its very possible.

B is an extraordinarily bad take.

But Baker need to be better at assessing what the defense is doing pre-snap, and knowing where the window is going to be.

Give OBJ and Landry a chance to make the tough catch, not Demetrius Harris. That is what they're here for.

To be fair, I don't think this is exactly the best play to illustrate the issues Baker's having.

While there's space around OBJ, he only appears to really become open once Baker looks to the left side of the field and ultimately throws the ball.

Unless Baker throws a dart to OBJ that is 100% online and in stride, OBJ get lit up by the safety or the play gets broken up. He would've had to hit OBJ directly out of the break.

B is an extra-ordinarily bad take.

Yeah, I mean, there is literally no one on this team who seems happier when other guys make plays than Baker. He was sprinting down the field damn near as fast as Chubb holding his hands out like a fucking airplane when Chubb ripped off that 88-yarder against Baltimore. I don't buy for a second that Baker would refuse to throw to someone out of jealousy, especially since Odell playing amazingly also makes Baker look fantastic because Baker is the one throwing him the ball. If his receivers are putting up awesome stats, so too is Baker.

That's a bit of a false dilemma, there are certainly many other reasons other than these two.

If OBJ shines, Baker shines. Gosh those are both bad takes.

...let me sabotage my own career so that Odell doesn’t take the spotlight from me haha

It reminds me how RG3 his rookie year was incredible, but he developed happy feet from all the injuries and could never get his mojo back. Lets hope Baker finds his way again, but there is precedence for this unfortunately.

This goes back to OU. His final season at OU, and maybe more? he lead the NCAA in passing while under pressure. Like he DESTROYED teams when he was under pressure. What the hell happened to that QB?
I thought about this a lot because im a huge Baker fan, and i also think he'll get through this and succeed.

The pressure he is facing is crazy different. Facing a blitz pressure leaves openings im the defense to pick apart. Facing 4 man pressure is a whole different type of bad. It leaves ectra men in coverage.

I'm just nkoi t sure how we fix this other than quicl hitter throws and hope the wr break it.

Behind the scenes it seems Baker is not well liked by many.

Landry and Beckham are starting to chirp and I feel the coach and QB were in their crosshairs with their recent comments.

Baker really needs to have a good game against Seattle. This could get real ugly.
