Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Yeah, if he were only a hulking mammoth like Josh Freeman, Tony Pike, Ryan Mallet, Scott Mitchell, Paxton Lynch, or Brock Osweiler, then he would be a good QB!

What exactly about my response invoked a keyboard warrior response from you?

if you think height is the reason Baker Mayfield has been struggling honestly it’s not worth even discussing because we are never going to agree. I’ll PM you my address so we can fist fight

I think on a technical level his height does matter because by watching video you can see these defenses tower over him. The more pressure, the better the odds he throws a bad ball. I think that has been the staple for every team he’s faced this year and I think his stats are a reflection.

Russell Wilson this guy is not. I don’t think you can be both slow on your feet and short and have overwhelming success.

FWIW, our passing DVOA has increased from 30th to 25th in the past few weeks...

Russell Wilson is pretty short, does fine.

As did Baker last year.

If Baker was...Bernie Kosar? He would succeed in this offense. (Tall, etc)

He's designed more for the West Coast though. He's not a pocket QB. Why Freddie and Monken think otherwise..is beyond arrogant.

How Dorsey has't walked into Berea with old Packers/Andy Reid playbooks and forcing those two to have implemented it is beyond me.

I don’t know if I agree with this, because Baker thrived last year in a non-west coast offense. He was slinging it down the field like Brett Farve, and with striking precision.

I’m not going to pull up a 2018 highlight video because I don’t want to be depressed, but the Baker on that tape and the Baker of this year are practically unrecognizable.

Rookie year Baker was like:

He had to go back to Wild Thing to succeed, and so does Baker.

Who could have predicted that a one read quarterback that always rolls to his right would struggle once defenses adjusted to figure out what his pre-snap read was?

85% of the struggles are on Baker. Freddie's poor play making and clock management make up the majority of the rest.

Even small things like Baker now leading the league in MPH on his throws. The solution when you struggle is NOT to simply throw the ball harder. There has to be a coach that can sit him down and relate this information. At least its harder for the defenders to catch blazing fastballs too though.

This man didn’t watch one single fucking snap last year it seems.

Baker truthers are coming from every which way

the arguments are just making progressively less and less sense

Baker took 2.79 seconds to throw last season, 12th longest of 39 qualified passers

man it sure took him forever to make his 1 read every play!

This is just a BAD job by the QB to hit a man when he's open.

Jarvis should get this ball at around the :13 second mark of this video. Ball comes out at about the :16 mark.

I know I know, Baker made nice throws last year.

But this is inexcusable with the game on the line. Freddie schemed him open, the ball isn't getting to where it needs to be.

I doubt you’ll find anyone to disagree. But people blaming his struggles on height or being a one read QB (which is also funny because in that play you shared where he blew it he clearly goes through multiple reads), are just not true imo

he’s been bad for a lot of reasons, being a 1 read QB that the league suddenly figured out ain’t it

We can laugh it off, but I HIGHLY encourage people to read this very lengthy article from earlier in the season:

The disturbing part is that it hasnt gotten better. Was I being reactionary by saying he always is one read or always runs to his right? Of course. No one does the same thing all the time. It is absolutely his tendency though. Did you guys catch Aqib Talib saying the same thing in an interview this week? Said he's a one read guy who scrambles to his right once his read is gone. He said that he did it 20 times in the Rams game. We've got opposing defenders coming out and saying it and plenty of other non-players in and around the league saying it. There has to be some truth to it right?

He was great last year. I loved every second of it. He is the worst starting QB in the league this year. I don't know why it's a sin to point out the reasons why.

I'll take it even further and say that being a primarily one read quarterback isnt a bad thing. We as Browns fans love to label Lamar as a running back. His tendency is to run, but he and the coaching staff have found a way to maximize his strength to make their offense special. Baker simply does better when he knows where the ball is going before the snap. The coaching staff is trying, but doing a poor job of calling these types of plays. Baker is doing a poor job of executing these plays, but Baker CAN win obviously. We've all seen it. He is just going to have to have even better execution because of his one read tendencies.

edit: Also suggesting that the league doesnt find out quarterback's tendencies and adjust their defense against them is wild. Baker isnt the first and certainly won't be the last to have to make counter adjustments.

Thanks I’ll check it out after work. I would ask though assuming it isn’t addressed in the article, why wasn’t 10 games worth of game film enough last year for teams to figure out Baker’s tendencies? The Ravens week 17 still couldn’t figure it out. Why wouldn’t teams make these adjustments during the year last year when there was 3/4 a season worth of tape
