Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
For what it's worth I don't think Baker was terrible yesterday and I don’t think he was the sole reason a potential blowout turned into a soul-deadening close shave. A few plays he'd like to have back but I can see where his frustration with the second-half philosophy came from. When a team is coming back like the Ravens were in the fourth there's nothing more back-breaking for them than giving up chunk passing plays when they were selling everything to stop the Browns trying to run out clock. Those plays were not called and running on early downs was simply not working, even with elite guards and a ProBowl RB.

Bottom line is that yesterday was a must-win and that was accomplished and it was undoubtedly a step forward on what we saw prior to the bye-week.

Four more games with those against AFC opponents at least landing firmly in the 'essential' category. I'd love to say I was optimistic about them but I think all four games will be very tough for varying reasons. Any early season faith in Chase McLaughlin has evaporated.

'm encouraged that the defense is establishing an identity and finally showing glimpses of what we all hoped it could be. Running the football should be easier in the remaining games. That’s got to help.

If Mayfield could play at the level he showed in the first half more consistently across all four games we have a realistic shot at making the playoffs. That’s obviously a big If, but I’m not going to castigate him for running head first to keep the chains moving at times.
Your points here are spot on. The kicker has been garbage over the past month for sure. And those people that bash Mayfield for going balls to the wall to move the sticks like he did yesterday have shit for brains.

If I'm guessing.........Higgins.

He's tight with Baker, he's been generally MIA on the season and I'm sure he's good for a play calling quote. :chuckle:
Are we just going to pretend OBJ doesnt exist anymore even though he isnt with the team?

But I would imagine you probably have OBJ, Higgins, Baker, and maybe even Landry or Njoku are bitching/have bitched about the play calling. In fact a lot of this message board has been bitching about it for weeks.

Sigh............

One of the biggest issues with Baker that we're seeing play out in real time right now is that he was prematurely labeled a "Gets us" guy when the whole time Josh Allen and to an extent Lamar Jackson were more "Gets us" than Baker

I mean even from their backgrounds, draft profiles, skills, and how they got to where they are, Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson fit that narrative better than Baker does.

When the fans (specifically the Baker defenders) describe the importance and impact of having Baker here he doesn't quite backup what they are describing. He's smaller in stature in physically more limited than the other two guys. I always laughed at the whole draft a QB that can play in the AFC North narrative during draft season but Baker is proving exactly why that narrative is so strong.

Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen have been better than Baker in pretty much every aspect of QB play. They are both better leaders too. You can say what you want about Lamar and a lot has been said about him but he checks way more boxes than Baker does. So does Josh Allen.

I think a lot of fans were so thirsty to feel like we finally found our guy that they talked themselves into believing that he was something that he wasn't. Baker's not that guy and it has become more and more obvious. It's actually gotten so bad that if you even bring up Lamar Jackson or Josh Allen (two QB's that have played at an MVP level for an entire season) you will get met with a lot of nitpicky backlash. With Josh Allen it was always his accuracy, decision making, and he was always gonna come back down to earth (from a level that Baker has never played at btw...) and with Lamar Jackson you know the narratives. He's a running back, he can't throw, he's gonna get hurt running, the league has figured him out. Well both dudes know how to win games and they put up the godly QB numbers to go with it.

Meanwhile we're stuck here continuously referencing an 8 game stretch from the end of LAST SEASON where Baker played like a top 10 QB in some areas against weaker competition to defend him.

That's the truth on where we're at. Baker is not that guy but there is a movement of fans who will not get past that until he's gone which at this rate seems inevitable after this season.

Go Browns.

Edit;

I will also add that a lot of times teams take on the personality of their QB and I think after the whole OBJ saga Baker lost the locker room. Myles Garrett, JJIII, Landry, Higgins, Kareem Hunt, and other players were not thrilled about how that went down and you're lying if you don't think that guys in that locker room aren't riding as hard for Baker right now like they did before.

I heard today that Jarvis Landry has not even addressed the media after games or in practice in like 7 weeks. This is supposed to be the emotional leader of the team and it sure does seem like he's checked out. Myles Garrett has called the team out multiple times (he's came out and backed it up with his play though). JJIII has made some comments that would make you think that he doesn't even play for The Browns after OBJ was released.

My point is that none of this would be an issue if you had a QB who was a leader of the team and was a guy that everybody rallies around. Not a QB who still leaks shit to the media and has his family creating drama. Or a QB who has flat out attacked the fans.

This is the second straight home win where there was some bullshit coming from our QB. He didn't address the media after we beat DET and now he has an issue with the play calling. These are two games that we won and yet there is still drama. This dude has defnitely lost this locker room.

Baker Mayfield will be an excellent QB……

…………in Sean Payton’s system in New Orleans…

I just can’t wait until the Browns have their guy. Like no questions asked, this is the guy and we as Browns fans feel good about it…

Baker is going to do just enough to get us in the playoffs and Browns fans will still bicker about who Bake is and isn't, oh and when he loses the playoff game, ah shit here we go again.

Waited 31 years to have a QB that was worth some kind of damn, you same people would've talked major shit about Bernie with his 53-51 record and 18 TD season's, if that. I think he eclipsed 20 once.

If you can guarantee me someone better, sure, I'll listen. But you couldn't guarantee me that shit since 99.

Nothing that Baker Mayfield does or has done here has anything to do with anything prior to him being drafted.

What exactly does Baker Mayfield have to do with Charlie Frye or Jeff Garcia being our QB's at one point?

LAR traded Jared Goff and he led them to a Super Bowl. The team that beat them, NE, parted ways with Tom Brady. Baker Mayfield is not teflon. He can be replaced.

If its that easy, then our inept franchise wouldn't have us fans suffering since 1999 with the same trash can QBs one season here, and one season there.

I can see why majority is in favor of Mayfield, because we are Browns fans and tasting a little bit of success. If Case Keenum is QB'ing every game, there's no way in hell we are 7-6.

LAR trading Goff for Stafford is a rare situation. Don't think that'll just happen for us with Wilson.

But what if it could? What if we put together a package Seattle agrees with? I don't think it will happen either, but it isn't out of the realm of possibility.

Cleveland didn't make the cut.

NO, NYG, DEN are the reported teams Russ prefers

Denver has the upper hand imo. Team is literally right there. All they need is Wilson.

Maybe he didn't think we'd ditch Mayfield. Each of those teams has a clear need for an upgrade. At the beginning of the year, we didn't think we had that same need. We still might not, but it would be worth discussing with his people.

Imagine thinking Baker wouldn't act like a petulant child if the Browns brought in another QB that could actually take his job and not some caddie like Keenum.
Just keep on whippin' that horse.

Another thing I don't understand with Baker especially after his post game comments about being too conservative is that Baker does a horrible job protecting himself. You'd think a guy who is a former baseball player playing QB would be better at knowing when to slide and get down but nope.

A few plays before he got knocked out of the game baker was scrambling and he dove head first and landed right on his bad shoulder. Just a dumb ass decision for him to make in that spot but hey he's tough right?

It was a dumb decision. He needs to be better at giving himself up on sacks and scrambles but he has to keep up the farce about being a tough guy because he's too far down that path to go back now. You hate to see it.
Sliding would have put the spot short of the sticks and it was 3rd down.
