To me, The Wire is 1A and Breaking Bad is 1B, with Mad Men as a somewhat distant 2nd. Wanted to get into BoardWalk Empires but just couldn't. Watched season 1 and 2 episodes of season 2 - never finished it.
The other show i heard was phenomenal was Justified.
The Wire was simply a fabulous show that did not get the acclaim and attention it deserved. To those that can't get into it - give it a few episodes. It can be hard to follow at first because they throw so many characters at you but once it kicks in, wow. Amazing character development, superb acting. So much more than a "cop" show. Never has their been a character before or since like Omar Little. So good that we are thinking of watching the entire series over again (it's been a few years).
Justified is fantastic as well. Has great acting and witty dialogue and keeps you on the end of your seat. HIGHLY recommend that show.
Love Mad Men but I can see why it's not for everyone. It does take some time to get rolling so you would definitely need to watch more than the first episode to really get a feel for what it is.
I really enjoyed the first couple of seasons of Dexter but I kind of lost interest after Season 4, wasn't a fan of the whole Julia Stiles storyline in Season 5.
I don't like the idea of separating Breaking Bad's last into two parts. They did that with Walking Dead last year and I found it irritating. Breaking Bad is such a unique show. It's the first time I've actually hated the main character and will not be sad when he is caught and/or killed at the end. The actor who plays Jesse is amazing (as is of course Bryan Cranston).
