BROWNS OFF-SEASON 2020

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I think we've made great strides fixing our biggest weak points - OTx2, TE, DL depth and S. I think we are weak still at OL depth, WR depth, LB and CB depth. We could also use more pass rush ability. But with good schemes, coaching and some health fortune it's a playoff team roster IMO. Quite a bit riding on 6.

Once again: the team looks good on paper. Strength across every starting position on offense except RG - only area lacking depth on offense is WR. Defensive holes are at LB and Safety, but strength and depth at every other position.

Season will come down to Mayfield and Stefanski. Which is usually the case, but there’s nowhere else to point on paper for failure.

We’re still going to have an opportunity to fill some of these holes. There will be a number of cap casualties out there.

The supplemental draft will be interesting to watch as well. I’m still of the belief there isn’t going to be a college football season.

I have a feeling there’s going to be some pretty good players that wind up in the supplemental draft once there’s a bit more clarity on the Covid situation. I would imagine many draft eligible juniors and seniors will wind up in the supplemental draft if it looks like the college season will get cancelled.

Does anyone know if the pay scales are the same between the regular draft and the supplemental draft?

These guys are all RS Juniors or Seniors and many would have at minimum gone at some point in the first three rounds:

Travis Etienne RB
Marvin Wilson DT
Creed Humphrey C/G
Walker Little OT
Samuel Cosmi OT
Chubby Hubbard RB
Devonta Smith WR
TAMORRION TERRY WR
Shaun Wade CB
Paulson Adebo CB
Dylan Moses LB
Hamsah Nasirildeen S
Richard LeCounte III S

There’s a lot more. If I was a senior and I found out the NFL was going to play and the college season was cancelled, I’m not going to want to sit around working out, taking online classes, and waiting around for the 2021 draft or the 2021 college season.

We’ll see what happens, but that 3rd we got from NO could turn out to be huge.

I have a hard enough time scouting the draft each year, let alone guys who are a year away, so I have nothing to contribute other than loving your auto-correct for "Chubby Hubbard."

The overwhelming weak spot on paper remains linebacker.

Mack Wilson is pretty good in zone coverage, but was pretty terrible at everything else last year. Goodson and Takitaki don't seem like they can cover at the NFL level. The knock on Phillips is that he's a poor coverage player as well. These are your top four LBs right now. It's not great.

Unless the plan is to play 6 defensive backs on passing downs, which could be possible, I'm not sure how Woods is going to keep this defense from getting beat up in the passing game with a group of poor coverage LBs.

Maybe something like this in obvious passing formations...

4 man DL
Wilson
Ward, Greedy, Mitchell, Joseph, Delpit, Sendejo

I think for now Woods can work with guys like Sendejo and Delpit in place of small LBs when called for. Those two aren't much smaller than, say, Patrick Queen or Kwon Alexander. It's not ideal but hopefully he can make it work.

Browns might also feel better about their LBs than fans do.

Or maybe they don't put a ton of value on the position.

Or who knows, maybe they think someone like Willie Harvey or Tae Davis might be decent players.

If the browns re-sign Higgins, I think I would be fine heading into the season with dpj as the 4th or 5th receiver.

Obj
Landry
Higgins
Ratley
DPJ
Taylor/Hodge?

Figured they'll save one spot to fill out special teams. With the depth at te I think this might be okay for the upcoming season. If DPJ can show potential, that would be huge for this group.

Given that he was a good special teams player at Michigan, I’d think DPJ would fill the returner/special teams/developmental guy in the group. Anything beyond that is a bonus.

Whether or not they resign Higgins, I think the ideal situation would be finding a legitimate 3rd WR who is a slot/pure burner in the cap casualties or via trade.

Isn’t Natson a return specialist?

Which makes him expendable

Correct. Looking at his return numbers last year, he wasn't anything special. If DPJ's punt return skills translate to the NFL then Natson is expendable and that roster spot could go to a more important position, maybe like another LB.

Natson had 0 fumbles in all of his kick returns and punts. That is all I care about. And he has the speed to be able to break any one of those into a long gain/TD very quickly.

If DPJ can show he has the hands to not bumble up some punts, then do w/e with Natson. But I feel he can be a nice asset to this team that, as I said previously in another thread, make me bite my lip every time we were receiving a punt. Even to the point of just catching it and not letting it squib by. I don't know how many times that happened and we ended up "losing" 15+ yards.
