BROWNS OFF-SEASON 2020

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
This is likely the Browns thinking here:

I wouldn’t be surprised to see them keep Kirksey at a pay cut, thinking they can pay a quarter of the price and get half the production—if he’s healthy...

What’s hard with this is Schobert has been one of the few consistent, reliable playmakers this team has had, but I understand the reluctance to pay a premium price for a non-premium position..

I guess the real tell will be the contract Schobert actually signs. If it is 12-13m/yr.... then, ok. He and his agent made the right call.
If the market dries up and he "only" signs for less then 10m/yr... then it doesn't look good for anyone. Not Schobert, not his agent, and not the Browns FO.

Who knows, maybe the bridge isn't burnt, and he could still resign with Clev.

Count me in the minority that was not looking forward to paying $10 million to an off-ball linebacker. I’d much rather take that money and reinvest it in the offensive and defensive lines.

Schobert is one of the best in the NFL at what he does... maybe the best. I just do not believe it’s worth the money he was demanding.

He's always been a crappy Kuechly to me.

One of the smartest LB'ers in the game. He really knows what's coming and where to position himself. He's a great football player.

He's just not a great athletic talent. He's consistently among the league leaders in missed tackles. He's going to be missed--but he's not playing a high-impact position in today's NFL, so we shouldn't pay him a high-impact salary.

With only 2 LB'ers on the field at a time, and Wilson having one of those spots locked up 100% of the time, I think we'll be fine.

I wish Joe the best.

The Browns are in a bit of a tough spot with Schobert because he’s solid, but unspectacular.

But the nature of free agency is that he will be paid handsomely.

He’s almost assuredly not going to produce to the level he’s going to be paid, but at the same time he is going to be a significant loss to the defense.

I'm not too worried about it. Mack will have another season under his belt, and Takitaki can still turn into something good. We don't know the ceiling for these two guys yet. Mack showed signs of possibly being a good player and if he limits his rookie mistakes, he can probably get there.

We'll almost certainly sign a cheap vet in FA to help guide them and be reliable on the field, and we may even take a swing in the draft in a later round. All of that and we'd likely only have 2 LBs on the field all season, maybe even just 1 at times.

It's not the greatest situation, but I don't think it'll be back-breaking for our team especially if we invest that money into the O and D lines.

i don’t want to see Joe go, but I don’t have a big issue with letting him walk. He’s a solid player, but replaceable.

If they do intend to invest heavily on the oline, I could see them making a run at Conklin and maybe a player like Vaitai. That would give them the ability to draft the best player available.

If they end up taking an offensive tackle,Vaitai gives them the flexibility to move him to right guard, plug Thomas, Wirfs, etc at Left tackle, and you’d have Conklin anchoring the other side.

There was no way a heavy analytics front office was going to give big money to a linebacker. The position just isn't worth it. I agree with that - unless you have a really unique guy who can play at all three levels, pass rush, linebacker and safety (sort of what they might have envisioned for Peppers). Joe Sho isn’t that guy.

On a related note there sure were a lot of 4.5-somethings run by LBs yesterday. Hopefully we grab one of those guys mid-round somewhere for development. I'm tired of 4.7ish linebackers.

One player I kept seeing linked to the Browns is Akeem Davis-Gaither from Appalachian State. After a solid showing in the bench press and measuring bigger than expected, he revealed that he will have foot surgery. He was expected to be a sub 4.6 athlete. One of my favorite linebacker sleepers Logan Wilson from Wyoming didn't go under 4.6, but showed safety type fluidity and coverage skills.

The Browns invested in young linebackers already, so keep an eye out for day three type projects to support Kirksey, TakiTaki, and Wilson.

I do wonder what we will do in FA. I wonder if analysics will tell them to let him go, sign some cheap talent, and get compensatory picks next year. I just don’t see this front office going out and spending like Dorsey. I think it would be smart to try and exsrend some of our guys, and wait and pick up guys who are cap casualties and maybe make some trades. Outside of OL, I don’t see any true impact players worth paying this offseason when we have a lot of young guys due for new contracts the next few years.

They have to be laser focused on the Oline this year. We must replace both starting tackles and add a decent depth guy at tackle and we certainly could upgrade RG as well.
