Bucks get Magloire for Mason
By Marc Stein
ESPN.com

The Milwaukee Bucks continued to aggressively reshape their roster Wednesday by beating out several teams to acquire New Orleans/Oklahoma City center Jamaal Magloire, according to NBA front-office sources.

In a trade that will be announced later Wednesday, Milwaukee has agreed to send swingman Desmond Mason, its 2006 first-round pick and cash considerations to the Hornets for Magloire, an East All-Star in 2004.

The Bucks, according to sources, felt they needed a more physical presence on their front line to aid the development of No. 1 overall pick Andrew Bogut and the recently re-signed Dan Gadzuric.

Given Milwaukee's logjam of swingmen after retaining Michael Redd, trading for Jiri Welsch and signing Bobby Simmons, a trade involving Mason between now and the February deadline was somewhat inevitable. This one gives the Bucks an opportunity to play Magloire and Bogut together, with Simmons starting at the other forward spot. The Bucks also have Gadzuric and Joe Smith in what suddenly looks like a well-rounded frontcourt rotation.

The Hornets have been shopping Magloire for months as part of their own makeover, which accelerated in February when Baron Davis, another former All-Star, was dealt to Golden State.

Coach Byron Scott denied earlier this week that Magloire was available, but the Hornets rebuilding around the embryonic backcourt of Chris Paul and J.R. Smith and displaced from its home base in New Orleans for at least a season - seized the chance to add another 2006 first-rounder to their own and an athletic swingman with ties to the team's new home state.

Mason, entering his sixth season out of Oklahoma State, carries a career scoring average of 12.9 points per game and averaged a career-best 17.2 points last season.

Magloire played only 23 games in 2004-05 because of a fractured ring finger but averaged 13.6 points and 10.3 rebounds in the previous season. The five-year veteran's 19 points in the 2004 All-Star Game led the East.

Wow...What a small price to pay for a good bigman. Mags in my opinion really propels the Bucks right back into the upper echelon of the East.

I don't like the move... Only because they had to give up their best player off the bench...

Magloire is injury prone, but that doesn't mean anything about this season...

But they basically replace Mase on the bench with ???? Smith, Bogut.. Plus they are thin with wing players...

They are now counting on JIRI WELSCH for heavy minutes :chuckles:

While it is a nice pick-up for them, I believe that it only propels them from 5th in the Central to 4th. I had them pegged as a low-seed playoff team, and now they are probably in the 5-6 range at best. They still won't be able to hang with Detroit, Indiana and us. JMHO

Let's see if Jamal can stay healthy for an extended period of time, which is something that he hasn't done for a while

Also, if he doesn't work out, then they've given up a solid swingman and 15+ ppg along with a #1 pick.

So if they have a repeat performance of last year, which could be possible provided the injuries that could occur with Magloire they gave up their pick which could be lottery next year along with cash. I'm not sure about this, he missed most of last year and is a FA soon.

I like it for both teams. Frankly, the Bucks were too thin up front, and while Magloire in my mind is not all that great, he is still quality. Bogut could move to PF and that would give them a nice front court with Simmons. New Orleans is obviously rebuilding at this point and they don't really need an aging, slightly injury proned center. They get nice player in Mason and get a first round draft choice.

The hornets, while not a good team, look to be pretty fun now. They have Paul who can get the ball to two prolific dunkers in Mason and JR Smith. The "Birdman" Chris Andersen can also finally SPREAD HIS WINGS AND SOAR!!! :chuckles:

Overall, It is good for eveyone. Mason will get more minutes, Magloire has a chance to be on a team that has a chance to be good, Bucks become more complete and the Hornets get some rebuilding pieces.

He had a broken finger, not exactly a recurring injury. He has been the healthiest center in the league bar none the previous 4 years.

Milwaukee-New Orleans Trade

Just read on another board that the Bucks traded Mason, a first-round draft pick and money to the Hornets for Magliore, who I think is in the last year of his contract. I guess Karma's man Bogut wasn't quite ready for major minutes at the center spot. In the short run, looks to me like a great trade for the Bucks, but if they can't keep Magliore (assuming I'm right that he's in the last year) then New Orleans made a good trade for the future.

Re: Milwaukee-New Orleans Trade

So who else do the hornets have to play center?

Re: Milwaukee-New Orleans Trade

great trade for the Bucks.

I think the Bucks come out way ahead in this deal. Magloire is one of the few good C's in the league and to only have to give up Mason and a mid #1 for him is a good trade. Mason is a solid player but he's a 6-5 swingman with limited shooting range.
C's like Magloire are in high demand in the NBA and the Hornets should have been able to get much more in return.
Simmons had replaced Mason as a starter and Magloire now gives the Bucks great depth at C and PF. The Bucks basically traded a backup SF/SG for a good starting C.

I don't like this trade as a Cavs fan.

Re: Milwaukee-New Orleans Trade

I know for a fact Magloire will not stay he will want close to max dollars and they won't have it. Especially since Bogut's deal is only a 2 year deal. He wants to go to his hometown Canada and play with the Craptors he has said that over and over again.

Re: Milwaukee-New Orleans Trade

Boguts deal is not a 2 year deal. He is under a rookie contract which means they can keep him for five years just like every other first round pick.

Re: Milwaukee-New Orleans Trade

couldn't agree more. the ability to mix those three bigs will be huge for those guys.
