Game 23 Vs. Philadelphia

Z's Replacement?

In all of the panic in looking to find a replacement for Z when he retires, we may have had one all along. Although he's not technically a 5, and could be exploited defensively in that role, here are Andy's numbers as a starter:

In 2005-06 (4 games): 8.0 ppg, 7.8 rpg (4.6 ppg and 4.9 rpg on the season including those games).

In 2006-07 (6 games): 12.0 ppg, 10.3 rpg (6.8 ppg and 6.7 rpg on the season including those games).

In 2007-08 (13 games): 7.9 ppg, 10.1 rpg (6.7 ppg and 8.3 rpg on the season including those games).

Tonight: 17 points and 7 rebounds (8.6 ppg and 6.5 rpg this season not including tonight).

Learning the Second Time Around.

Don't look now, but the Cavaliers are 12-0 against teams they've faced twice. Even more impressive, with the exception of Chicago, the Cavs have won the 2nd match-up by more points than the first every single time. Here's a closer look at the first and second games versus these teams:

- Charlotte (2-0), +17 pts, +20 pts
- Chicago (2-0), +14 pts, +9 pts
- Indiana (2-0), +4 pts, +24 pts
- Milwaukee (2-0), +6 pts, +12 pts
- New York (2-0), +18 pts, +36 pts
- Philadelphia (2-0), +8 pts, +16 pts

= +67 pts, +117 pts.

Simply put, this means that against teams the Cavs beat twice, they beat them the first time by an average of 11.2 points, and then by an average of 19.5 points the second time around. Talk about quick learners!

Mr. Pavlovic.

Sasha has looked to be a good bench player as of late, contributing to the team's success. Here's a look at his last 8 games compared to 6 of the games before them (I threw out the other 7 games he played in before the last 8, because he logged single digit minutes and only recorded 3 points combined).

First 6 (only games w/ double digit minutes): 3.7 ppg, 1.8 rpg, and .7 apg.

Last 8 (all double digit minutes): 5.5 ppg, 2.0 rpg, and 1.6 apg.

The King's Back

In the last four games, LeBron James has worked to acquire at least each of the following:

- 25+ points, 4+ rebounds, 4+ assists, 1+ 3pm, 8+ fgm, and 7+ ftm.

View from the other side:

This marks the first game during the 11 game win streak that the Cavs' opponent has succeeded to shoot a higher fg% than the Cavaliers.

- The 76ers managed to shoot 43.5% from the field, while the Cavaliers only shot 41.0%. However, the 20 team turnovers may have taken their momentum in the other direction :chuckles:

- Also, although it's not a "view from the other side" (I didn't want to bother making it into its own section), Jawad Williams recorded the first points of his career. Congrats Jawad! :D

Game 24 @ Atlanta

The Good:

- After going 11-12 from the line tonight, LeBron James is now shooting 80.0% from the ft line. This is what he set his target at during the preseason.

- Despite losing tonight, the Cavs are 5-2 this season in the second games of back-to backs. Further, the average margin in those 7 games is +10.3 ppg. Last year, in their first seven back-to-backs, the Cavs were 2-5, with an average margin of -9.7 ppg.

The Bad:

- With tonight's loss, the Cavs winning streak ends at 11, just one game shy of breaking the franchise record.

- Tonight marks the first time this season that Cavaliers have let their opponents shoot a higher fg% than them in consecutive games.

- LeBron James recorded his season high in minutes played (46), obviously due to injuries.

The Ugly:

- The 39 free throws shot by the Atlanta Hawks marks the most attempts by a Cavaliers opponent this season.

- Also, the +16 in free throw descrepancy in favor of the Hawks marks the largest discrepancy in favor of a Cavs' opponent this season.

View from the other side:

- With this loss, Atlanta becomes the first team that the Cavaliers have faced twice, yet failed to beat twice.

- The 17 points by Joe Johnson marks his second lowest output this season. His lowest amount of points (4) came in Cleveland earlier this season. On the season, JJ is averaging the following against the Cavaliers:

(In 2 games): 10.5 ppg, 6.5 apg, 2.5 rpg, 0.5 bpg, and 0.0 spg.

I'm starting to think that 11 game streak will never be beaten. Thats around 5 ties now I think.

3 other fun facts:

Cavs don't play their next back-to-back until Jan. 15 (at Chicago) and Jan. 16 (home New Orleans).

Cavs have one more 4 games in 5 nights stretch for the entire season (end of February).

Cavs were 10-14 at this point last season.

Good times ahead.

I'm starting to think that 11 game streak will never be beaten. Thats around 5 ties now I think.

Really? I was beginning to think it'd be beaten THIS season..:D

Game 25 @ Minnesota

Who You Gonna Call? Slump-Busters!

Delonte West recorded a Cavalier high 21 points in tonight's game, breaking out of his recent slump.

Here's a look at Delonte's last 8 games before tonight:

- 10.5 ppg, 34.4% shooting, while posting only one 50% shooting game.

Here are Delonte's stats from tonight:

- 21 points on 56.3% shooting, not to mention the 5 assists and 2 steals he recorded as well.

Also worth noting, Wally Szczerbiak broke out of a 3 game shooting slump tonight.

- In the previous three games, Wally averaged 3.3 ppg on 11.1% shooting including 0-7 from three. Also, he only averaged 3.3 rebounds per game.

- Tonight, Wally scored 10 points on 50% shooting, going 2 of 3 from three point land and grabbing 5 rebounds.

Coming Off The Loss.

Last year, in the four games after the Cavs' first four losses, they were 3-1. These games tell a lot about how teams respond to losses, especially so early in the season.

Here's a closer look at those 4 games in 2007-08:

- LeBron James was the leading scorer all 4 games, averaging 33.5 ppg.

- The Cavaliers, despite winning 3 of the 4 games, logged double digit turnovers every game.

- The Cavaliers failed to shoot 50% from the field in any game, averaging 44.4% from the field in the four games.

- The Cavs were +9 in point differential in the 4 games, averaging margins of +3.3 ppg in wins (+10 in 3 games).

Now, after 4 losses in this season, the Cavs are 4-0 in games after losses. Here is a closer look at those games:

- LeBron James was the leading scorer in 3 of the 4 games, averaging 26.8 ppg.

- The Cavaliers shot 50% from the field in two games, averaging a 49.2% field goal percentage in the four games.

- The Cavaliers were an amazing +73 in point differential in the 4 games, averaging margins of + 18.25 ppg in those wins.

Most importantly, the Cavaliers fourth game after a loss last year (the last game analyzed by the data above) came in November the 14th. This year, their fourth game after a loss was tonight, December the 17th.

Different Kind of Team.

Last year the Cavaliers invaded Minnesota in November in order to capture an 11 point victory. Although compared to this year, 11 points seems like a slim margin, it was one of only 10 double digit victories by Cleveland last year. Here are some stats from that game:

- The squad leaned heavily on LeBron for 45 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks.

- The Cavaliers bench only added 10 points in the game.

- The Cavaliers only outshot the T'Wolves by 0.9%.

- Al Jefferson went off for 30 points.

- Both Z and Boobie were healthy and started, and Eric Snow logged 13 minutes without recording a single point :chuckles:

Now, here is how tonight's game went, as the Cavaliers defeated Minnesota by 23 points:

- LeBron, while playing dominantly, recorded 32 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks.

- The Cavaliers bench added 21 points.

- The Cavaliers outshot the T'Wolves by 12.5%.

- Al Jefferson recorded 20 points.

- Eric Snow analyzed the game from the NBA studio.

The King.

- LeBron James, with 32 points tonight, is now averaging 30.8 ppg in his last five games. More impressive, in those 5 games, his lowest scoring game has been 28 points.

- He is also averaging 5.6 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 2 steals, and 1.6 blocks over the last 5 games.

View from the other side:

The 70 points recorded by the Timberwolves tonight marks the fewest by a Cavaliers opponent this season. Congrats on the defense guys!

Also, with a Jefferson lay-up, Minnesota was within one point of the Cavaliers with 3:30 left to go in the 3rd quarter. The Cavs responded with a 36-14 run to close out the game, propelled by a man known as "Video Game James."

Game 26 @ Denver

Two Ten-Piece Nuggets Please!

With tonight's win, the Cavaliers have beaten the Denver Nuggets twice this year, each time by 10+ points. This is the first year since the LeBron/Melo draft that Cleveland has beaten Denver both games in a season. Here are some more notable stats from the match-up.

- Before this season, the Cavs were 3-7 against the Nuggets in the LeBron James era.

- While the Cavs won both games this season by 10+ points, the Nuggets won both games last season by 20+ points. Here are how some of the numbers match-up.

In the two games vs. Denver last season (0-2).

- Denver averaged a shooting percentage of 50.3%

- Cleveland averaged a shooting percentage of 38.2%

- Denver averaged 117.5 points per game.

- Cleveland averaged 91.5 points per game.

- Carmelo Anthony averaged 24.5 points per game.

- LeBron James averaged 3.5 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game.

Here are the stats from the two games vs. Denver this season (2-0).

- Denver averaged a shooting percentage of 45.5% (Down by 4.8%)

- Cleveland averaged a shooting percentage of 52.5% (Up by 14.3%).

- Denver averaged 93.5 points per game (Down by 24 points per game).

- Cleveland averaged 107.5 points per game (Up by 16 points per game).

- Carmelo Anthony averaged 15.5 points per game (Down by 9 points per game).

- LeBron James averaged 9.5 assists and 9 rebounds per game (Up by 6 apg and 6 rpg).

Hurt? Not So Much.

Tonight, the doubtful Zydrunas Ilgauskas returned to the starting lineup for the Cavaliers and looked as though he didn't miss a beat. Here are some of his stats from tonight:

- Z tied his season high of 23 points in only 28 minutes of play.

- Ilguaskas was 9-14 from the floor, marking the 5th time this season that Z has attempted double digit shots and shot 60.0% or higher.

- Tonight marks the first time in the career of Zydrunas Ilgauskas that he has made two three pointers in a single game. Also, coming into this season, Z had made 5 career three point field goals. So far in this season, he has made 6 three pointers, making 11 for his career.

Slump? Delete That Thread!

Delonte West followed up his great game at Minnesota, by setting a new Cavalier high. He topped his old high (21), which stood for two days, with one that was a tad bit higher, 22.

Over the last two games, West is averaging the following:

- 21.5 ppg, 4.5 apg, 2.5 rpg, and 2 steals per game.

- Also, he is shooting 58.6% from the field (17/29) and 100% from the line (7/7).

More Good Shooting.

Over the past three games, LeBron James has managed to shoot above 50.0% and score over 30 points. Here are the averages from the past 3 games:

- 32.7 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 6.7 apg, 2 spg, and 1 bpg.

- He is also 37/59 (62.7%) from the floor and 20/24 from the stripe (83.3%).

Very Sneaky.

Despite scoring only single digits the past two games, that "no-defense-playing-son-of-a-bitch" from the Bucks has been very productive over the last 6 games. Here's a closer look:

In the last 6 games (5-1):

- 15.7 ppg (basically his average) and 4.0 apg (slightly below his average).

But, he has really shined with his efficient shooting and rebounding:

- 5.2 rpg (3.8 on the season) and 52.7% (47.5% on the season).

Also, something I found interesting is that even though the Cavs are only 5-1 in those 6 games, and supposedly Bucks fans think Mo has no part in our success, the Bucks themselves have failed to win 5 games, or even 4 games, in any 6 game stretch so far this season. Their best attempt was winning 3 of their first 6 games of the season. Although, I must admit that those wins were against OKC, NY, and WAS :chuckles:

View from the other side:

Tonight's 88 points by the Denver Nuggets ties a season low for points in a game. This means that in consecutive games, the Cavaliers defense has held the opposing team to a season low in points. Fairly spectacular, considering there have been 20+ games in the books.

Also, third-quarter Melo had a tough night tonight. His 13 points are tied for his third worst output of the season. Additionally, his assist to turnover ratio of 1 assist to 5 turnovers is tied for the third worst this season and his 2 total rebounds is tied for the worst so far this season. This is very impressive when you consider that Carmelo averages 21.3 ppg, 3.6 assists to 3.5 turnovers, and 8 rebounds a game.

Is that actually Wally with Meagan Fox? I really can't tell.

Game 27 @ OKC

1-2-3 Combo

In last night's game, Mo Williams, Delonte West, and LeBron James combined for 69 points. As amazing as this is, it is already the fourth time this season that the trio has combined for at least 69 points.

- They combined for 70 points in three games this season (Chicago, Utah, Atlanta).

More impressively, when LeBron James started at SF last year, he and the corresponding starters at point guard and shooting guard, only combined for 69 or more points twice.

- The two games included a 45 point game by LeBron against New York and Larry's magical 40 point night against Orlando.

In the four games this season in which Mo, Delonte, and LeBron have combined for 69 or more, only once has one of those players scored 40+ (LeBron had 41 against Chicago). This makes it fairly obvious that this is the best 1-2-3 LeBron has played with so far in his career. As a side-note, the trio so far this year is averaging a combined 55.4 points per game.

Also worth noting, this marks only the second game this season where Mo, Delonte, and LeBron have all shot greater than 50% from the field in a game. Astonishingly, the other time they did it was at home against OKC :chuckles:

Here's a look at how the two match-up:

11/26/08 - 29 points (combined), 13-21 (61.9%), 1-3 from 3 (33.3%), 2-4 from the line (50%), 18 assists, 8 rebounds, 1 steal, 3 blocks, 0 turnovers.

12/21/08 - 69 points (combined), 30-50 (60%), 6-10 from 3 (60%), 3-4 from the line (75%), 15 assists, 11 rebounds, 8 steals, 2 blocks, 5 turnovers.

We're Going Streaking?

I don't want to jihinxee us, but it appears as though there may be another streak to start. After last night's game, the Cavs have won their last 3 games. Here's a look at how this 3 game winning streak matches up with the first 3 games of the other two streaks:

1st streak (@Dal, Chi, Ind):

- Average Margin of Victory: 12.3 ppg.

- Average Shooting Percentage: 47.1%.

- Opponent's Average Shooting %: 42.6%.

- LeBron James: 32.3 ppg, 8.7 rpg, 5.7 apg, 2.3 spg, 1.7 bpg, and 3.3 turnovers a game.

2nd streak (Atl, @Nyk, Okc):

- Average Margin of Victory: 22.3 ppg.

- Average Shooting Percentage: 54.7%.

- Opponent's Average Shooting %: 40.4%.

- LeBron James: 21.3 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 4.0 apg, 1.3 spg, 1.3 bpg, and 1.0 turnovers a game.

3rd streak (@Min, @Den, @Okc):

- Average Margin of Victory: 17 ppg.

- Average Shooting Percentage: 52.1%

- Opponent's Average Shooting %: 42.7%

- LeBron James: 32.0 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 6.0 apg, 1.7 spg, 1.0 bpg, and 2.0 turnovers a game.

I think it's interesting to see how this 3 game streak is basically halfway in between the other two streaks. The Cavs are winning by more ppg and shooting a higher percentage than the first streak, but less ppg and a lower percentage than the second streak. On the other hand, LeBron is averaging more points, rebounds, assists, and steals than in the second streak. Also, his turnovers fall in between where they were the first and second streak. However, it is also obvious that while the first two streaks only had one road game, this streak has been built on the road. What does all this mean? That's up to your interpretation. I report, you decide :chuckles:

Playing All 4 Quarters

Believe it or not, this is only the third game so far this season that the Cavs have managed to win all 4 quarters of play. The other two occasions were vs. Indiana and @ Minnesota two games earlier. However, I wouldn't lose any sleep over the fact that 20 of the Cavs wins have a lost or tied quarter involved in them. Many of the lost quarters came in blowouts. For example, the last game against OKC, the Cavs were up 40 going into the 4th and the Thunder somehow managed to steal that quarter by 5 points.

Slumps-B-Gone!

After experiencing several shooting slumps, former Thunder players Delonte West and Wally Szczerbiak have managed to shoot the ball well the last 3 games. Here's a better look:

Delonte West (3 games):

- 20.3 ppg, 4.3 apg, 2.3 rpg, 2.0 spg, and 0.7 turnovers.

- 25-41 from the field (61%) and 7-7 from the line (100%).

It's great to see Delonte get more aggressive and attack the basket. The 20.3 ppg in his last 3 are a true testament to that aggressiveness. Last year in the regular season for the Cavaliers, Delonte's season high was 20 points, which he only achieved once.

Similarly, Wally Szczerbiak has managed to shoot the ball better over the last 3 games:

- 8.0 ppg, 3.7 rpg, and 1.0 apg in 21 minutes a game.

- 8-18 from the field (44.4%), 3-7 from 3 (42.9%), and 5-5 from the line (100%).

View from the other side:

The 7 combined points by Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Anderson Varejao marks the lowest output by the two in games they both played this season. The Thunder also held them to 2-9 shooting (22.2%) and a limited 8 combined rebounds.

Guard Russell Westbrook logged a career high in 3 point percentage (66.7%), tied a career high in assists (11), and recorded his second career double-double (24 points, 11 assists). Congrats Russy!

Is that actually Wally with Meagan Fox? I really can't tell.

It is actually Wally and Megan Fox, just not real :chuckles:
