There seems to be a few factions on how to view the draft, so I'm just gonna ask it flat out:

Pretty easy for me.

The NBA draft is about quality, not quantity. That's why playoff teams offer their 1st rounders all the time, and why teams end up with a billion later picks.

Always get the top tier talent.

If the 2nd option was a guarantee, sign me up. But it is not....and it is risky. Dropping 2 spots in a draft to 5 where there is still top-end quality left, and getting another shot 3 spots later....

Plus, I'm not a fan of Cunningham. Just don't like his game, and I don't see myself enjoying rooting for him. So if Mobes and Green go in the top 2....I'm a huge advocate of getting 5 and 8.

Considering I view Barnes as the 2nd best prospect and Sengun as 4th, this is fairly obvious to me. Mobley @ 3 > Barnes/Sengun >>>>>>>> anything else

I chose the Barnes and Sengun option because I really think Barnes probably ends up the best player in this draft, or at least he makes the biggest impact on a team. I would just take Barnes at 3, but if we can get both him and Sengun(actually would prefer Jalen Johnson), I think that's a no brainer for me. I think Cade is a lot of hype, but ultimately just ends up an average player and Green is a very good SG, but I don't think he's an exceptional talent. Mobley would be the other guy I'm taking at 3 if available.

I think the pathway is there for Barnes to be a great player, but I’m thinking that half of you who are convinced he’s the best player in the draft and should be taken at #3 haven’t watched him play.

Other
Cavs draft Isaiah Mobley by accident and Evan goes North

If we can get #5 and #8 from Orlando and the front office sees the tier as #3-#5/6 then getting #8 would be worth it. If we trade down we will know who is being taken at #3, it could be our least favorite of the tier. We might get a player in the same tier at #5 and a player that we can spend as a fit pick to make everything work.

I don't see any situation really, where this gm trades down from the highest pick hes ever had. But I agree getting 5 and 8 in this draft ,would be fine if they use the picks right.
If they want to use the draft to finish the rebuild anyway.

I pointed out a couple weeks ago that of the guys in the top 6 that played in USA basketball, that Mobley is the one that got the least minutes and wasn't that productive. I could see a scenario where Mobley falls to #3 and Koby decides he can get a player he like more than Mobley at #5 while also getting #8.

If they feel Mobley is not as good as every metric says he will be then sure. I think it is pretty much a lock he is a top 4 pick anyway, even if the Cavs do pass on him and dont trade down Toronto will.
I guess I can see Orlando trading for Mobley at 3 but I bet OKC can outbid the 5 & 8 using 6 and 16 and 18 and 2 future 1sts.

The other thing that Fedor said on his podcast is that the Cavs have done alot of scouting on the guys 5-10 because that's where they expected to pick. That's where the appeal of 5 and 8 might come into play. They might have two guys they really liked from that category that they are comfortable with from all their research pre-lottery.

Someone posted All-Star odds by draft position…5&8 gives you a 50% chance of an All-Star (plus presumably decent odds that the other guy has some kind of positive value). 3 gives you a 40% chance of an All-Star.

Unless you absolutely love the guy who falls to 3, this seems like a no-brainer trade for the Cavs.
