Cavaliers Trade Ideas: 2022-23 regular season edition

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
There is no chance I'm trading Jarrett Allen unless I'm getting a top 20 player back. That's not hyperbole, either.

I don't get why folks are so interested in making big changes to this roster, or accelerating it's timeline. This team goes because of dudes in their 5th year, or less, and a couple wily vets. Let them figure stuff out organically. Tinker. Use the assets that *aren't* one of the top players. They're playing amazing *without* this hypothetical top wing. Don't create a new hole just to get one; especially with Lauri and Cedi playing well.
Top 20 player back huh?

Can we settle for top 100 now?

Allen and Cedi to Washington for Porzingis

Mitchell to Atlanta for Murray, Hunter, and Griffin

Idk…let the JA trade ideas fly though. Poor effort player and a poor fit. Mobley is never gonna be lights out from 3.

fuck no. anything outside of that is going to be some mid.... including overpaid Porzingis who gets a big contract because he can shoot. But wtf else does he do? Might as well get Christian Wood.

if Allen is traded, Cavs need to get a shooting forward in return, with defensive upside. (Not KAT) Or a center close to his level like WCJ.

The Cavs ran into 1 of the maybe 3 teams in the league that these bigs have problems with. They'd even do better against the 76ers (even knowing that Embiid is basically a surrender type player).

I am more in the bag of "find someone who can shoot from the 4 position" so that you can stagger JA/Mobley in these kind of match-ups until a good deal shows up. Or someone else cheap who can be a bruiser. Technically that's how they were using Wade/Lamar. the problem with Lamar is that he is undersized. If he were like 6'9" he'd be already here.

Nope. Allen had problems, in large part, because he kept having to rotate/help on the guards and wings driving to the basket. All while getting next to zero touches on offense. The guards, and coaching staff, turned JA into Goldberg being strapped to the goal to get pucks shot at him. Like Goldberg, he may turn to drugs soon, if things don't change.

Trade #1
Cleveland receives: Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, '24 frp via Toronto, '25 frp via Atlanta, 32nd pick & '25 srp's via Chicago & Toronto
San Antonio receives: Donovan Mitchell

Why?
Cleveland needs wings. Mitchell is undersized, a taller wing next to Garland would be ideal.
San Antonio gets the best player in the deal.

Trade #2
Cleveland receives: Wendell Carter Jr., Chuma Okeke, '25 frp via Denver & '27 & '28 srp's via Boston
Orlando receives: Jarrett Allen

Why?
Cleveland needs a big that can shoot.
Orlando gets a big that fits better next to Paolo.

PG: Darius Garland / Ricky Rubio / Raul Neto
SG: Devin Vassell / Caris LeVert / Isaac Okoro
SF: Keldon Johnson / Chuma Okeke / Cedi Osman
PF: Evan Mobley / Dean Wade / Isaiah Mobley / Luka Travers
C: Wendell Carter Jr. / Khalifa Diop
Coach: Frank Vogel? Nick Nurse? Kenny Atkinson?

I’m interested in how you think Allen would net us a top 20 player back. The answer was trade Allen and Keep Mark. We messed up.

I dont think JA nets a top 20 player. That was the point; I want to keep him.

Trading JA and keeping Lauri would still net a hole at center. Evan isn't a 5, at least not full time. He'd be murdered before he could establish himself as a player.

We know that. Between Mobley, Garland, Mitchell and Mark we would have been in a good spot. You could have literally put anyone at center.

We wouldn't have had to trade Allen immediately if we kept Lauri. Mobley could have grown into the role and we could have traded JA at that point. Or we could have gone after someone to eventually take over for JA. A non-shooting 3rd big is going to be cheaper and easier to find than a 3pt shooting big especially that could handle the volume that Lauri could.

Can I ask why people are looking at trading Mitchell instead of Garland? Do people believe he’s the better of the two? Personally I don’t think so.

One is signed for 5 years. The other is signed for 2 years and seems to have a desire to go home to New York. That's why Mitchell is brought up in trade rumors. Garland is a top 30 to 35 player and is signed for 5 years. Why would the Cavaliers even consider trading him at this point?

To get better?

I wouldn’t trade either at the moment. Summer 2024 would be the time, and probably only if Mitchell signs an extension.

The exception would be trading Garland for a player you like still on a rookie deal plus other players/assets, or trading him for a player like Bridges who has multiple years left at a low number.

Getting better yes. But as things currently stand they shouldn't consider trading Garland. If Mitchell signs an extension and they continue to not work together then yes trade Garland. But as things stand trading Garland when you don't know if Mitchell will be here long term would be beyond moronic.

Continue to not work together? Are you saying you think they didn't work together this year?
