Cavs draft workouts

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It’s not being naive, it’s considering the facts, which are:

1) the Cavaliers are largely an analytics-driven organization, which will always put a premium on production.
2) they hired an older coach (66), with a reputation for turning programs around quickly. I really don’t think Beilein is looking at a 4-5 year rebuild, like some of us may have envisioned.

If the Cavs are enamored with anyone it’s likely to be Bol Bol because, in his relatively small sample size, the analytics point to a top 3 pick. His injury issues & thin frame obviously cause his stock to drop, but you can bet the Cavs are looking closely at him, as there’s a ‘unicorn’ element to him. Bol is the type of ‘swing for the fences’ pick this group would make, if they can grab another pick somewhere in the teens.

I mean, analytics can presumably be used to project player development.

They aren't all huddled around stats like VORP and PER and whatever as their "analytics". I'm sure it's much, much more complicated than that. Things we in the public aren't privy to.

Positive news, My boi Langford had his visit . That's all

Some interesting and very favorable comments from a former teammate of Langford’s:

So Romeo Langord has the Mesut Ozil complex where people perceive his body language and demeanor as apathy LMAO. I remember thinking Ozil didn't run much but Arsenal fans had tracking data to demonstrate that he ran more than anybody else on the team.

It would've been interesting to see him fully healthy and although it's not a knee injury, not addressing the ligament issue with his thumb since his senior year of high school seems pretty reckless for a guy who was planning on attending college for one year.

This workout is only rivaled by the great Yi Jianlin once dream-shaking a chair.
Yeah but you are only seeing one part of his game many scouts questioned which was his form which he obviously has proven to have put the countless hours of work in on to improve showcasing the ability to knock down long shots consistently . He's a worker, he's young, he's long, a smooth athlete with elite speed in the open court and has more upside than 90% of the keyed in on options like Hunter and Culver that will be there at 5 and the same as many that have lower floors like Bol, Little and Reddish that will take longer to develop.
I would take Sekou and not look back on a roster that needs a break falling to 5 , not take some high floor starter ceiling option that helps more right away precipitating the treadmill team mantra instead of the long term contender.

One of those teams is on the verge of winning an NBA Championship.

Sekou also didn't show that many skills. He showed remedial ball handling ability, an ability to jump and dunk on the breakaway and then take an hour and a half to load his shot on the jumper.

Proof is in the pudding. He doesn't have court vision/passing ability, he isn't a very good rebounder, and his shooting is streaky. His handle is very weak and his athletic ability is extremely overstated.

At best, IMO, he becomes a 3 and D guy at the next level.

I like the idea of Sekuo but from everything we've heard, taking him all the way up at fifth would definitely be a "smartest man in the room" type move.

Good shot form, great athlete and most importantly hard worker are definitely three noteworthy aspects that few in the draft can claim.

Just not at fifth.

Not a soccer fan, so I have no idea who that guy is? I heard Langford hurt the thumb early in his freshman season at IU. He opted to play with it, rather than get surgery and shut it down for the year, as Darius Garland did. So, I credit him for that as it shows selflessness and toughness, two great qualities.

Based on the video it appears that Indiana fans thought he was selfish and not a good teammate. Just a weird situation considering he played hurt all season.

I didn’t know how hurt he was but his stats against good completion was really really bad.

no wonder; you are using old scouting notes. He is a transition nightmare for defenses , his speed is his greatest weapon as an athlete and has shown excellent finishing ability etc. If he continues to prove his shooting from beyond the arc is consistent in remaining workouts his stock will only rise.
He does need to improve his ability to create for himself in the half court and will be pushed by NBA coaches to be more aggressive attacking the rim, but overall given he is the youngest player in the draft , his tools and physical profile at this stage make him more likely to have a elite 3&D floor than ceiling.

for a roster who's building blocks are limited to Sexton, Osman and Nance guaranteeing a 3-4 yr rebuild I'd rather they trusted their scouting department and took the bpa with a long term lens than limit their scope to more nba ready options just because they are picking at 5.
Heaven help us if they think they are winning or fighting for an 8th seed next season by taking higher floor options this early in a rebuild.

You aren't picking Culver or Hunter for next year, both can be a long term asset.

Here's the thing, could Sekou become an NBA superstar in time? Sure, it's within the range of outcomes. Is it likely? I don't think so. No matter how his skills have improved throughout the year, he didn't dominate Euro ball. He never has shown any truly elite skills. And then you're saying take a long term view, how many players become stars when they didn't dominate their league before the NBA?

I feel extremely confident that Culver and Hunter are NBA starters for a long time. I don't know what Sekou becomes in time, he could be a good player, he could be back in Europe by 2021. I don't think its smart to gamble on a player like Sekou or Reddish when the upside isn't realistically all that better than Culver or Hunter.
