hmmm... Taylor Hearn and Pierce Johnson (Rockies) traded for by Atlanta.. Hearn for ca$h considerations.. while the Rockies took back Vodnick and Gordon. The two guys are little more than roster fodder at this point.. one having been DFA'd once without being claimed.. This is clearly a case of "change of venue" therapy...

If Braves went and got Hearn like that, that means a team with a lesser record put a claim on him... I doubt if multiple teams where trying to get him, that he's as worthless as you thought he was...

This may be incorrect.., but, in reverse order, regardless of league.. a DFA'd player is prioritized / offered to each and every team if and until someone puts a claim in.. That claim is then defined/negotiated with the claiming club and the team the offered the player on waivers.. The Braves, being one of the last clubs in this heirarchy, would have been one of Hearn's last chances before being released or being assigned if this was his first DFA (it wasn't).. So.. he wasn't claimed by virtually every other club.. What he does with the opportunity with the Braves.. we'll see...

Frank Howard passed away today at age 87.
He was a mountain of a man that played baseball and basketball at Ohio State. He came up with the Dodgers, but had his most success with the Washington Senators. He was the Barry Bonds of his day hitting prodigious homeruns in an era when pitching was dominant.
I remember his matchups with Sam McDowell were classic.
Here is a radio broadcast of a Indians - Senators game where Indians manager Alvin Dark had McDowell just intentionally walk Howard, repeatedly.
