Cleveland Browns 2020 Regular Season: What a Ride!

5-11.

Defense will get smoked due to injuries and inexperience. Offense has the pieces to be elite but they need time to get acclimated. Browns will lose a lot of close games this year but will be all the better for it next year.

Scheme plays a big role, but it’s still important to emphasize Stefanski’s never been an HC and in Woods one year as DC in Denver, the team went 5-11 and ranked 23rd overall. The year before they were 4th, the year after he left they were 13th.

I’m optimistic with these guys, but I can be optimistic and not think they’ll be very good. I don’t see how that’s difficult to understand.

I don't think optimism is saying "They will be a bottom 5 defense". You can have optimism for the future but pessimistic this year.

Also, a couple weak areas on D is a gross understatement at this point. I suspect we’ll be without Greedy for a while. Who knows on Johnson. No Delpit obviously. So we’re down a starting safety and the #2 & #3 CB’s in a unit that wasn’t super deep and also missing the best LB from a unit that wasn’t very deep. The point is our LB’s weren’t good last year, and of the best two from last year one left in FA and one is hurt. Logic would tell you they’re not going to be good.

Our CBs is the deepest part of our defense lol. I don't know how much you follow the team so you may be out of the loop on some things. I'd argue Terrance Mitchell has been a better CB than Greedy this whole time. He was better last year, and he was better this year throughout camp. It sucks that Greedy is hurt and we won't have Johnson for the first few weeks (he's recovering extremely well and should resume activity soon), but we're not really hurting too badly there. Regardless, it's not like they have season ending injuries.

Delpit was not our starting safety. We have no idea how good he is - he made a couple plays in camp but that's about it. And we snagged Ronnie Harrison who looked to be a decent player and is likely a better player than Delpit as of right now. Jags fans were very upset over that trade.

So our weakest unit was our LBs. I'm not going to bother trying to sell you on Goodson or Takitaki (who had a great camp), but what I will say is that it is the least important position group on defense. Woods will likely use them as little as sparingly as possible. Even so, it's not like Mack will miss the entire year either. We don't have to have elite players lining that position in order to have an average defense.

The defense was around average before we lost Myles Garrett. I don't understand how losing Schobert (who was terrible) suddenly means it will be a bottom 5 unit. Is it possible? Sure. Is it definitive? Absolutely not.

Opening day score? Damn, Crackmore laying the wood. Will not watch.
Legitimately may have posted that sleeping. I'm off this week and was laying in bed around this time.

The “defense was average before we lost Myles” isn’t true but everyone wants to repeat it. They were 24th in the league when Myles went out and finished 25th. There wasn’t some precipitous drop. Maybe they looked different in how they played, but the results weren't much different.

Can anyone imagine if the Browns go scoreless in q1 like Kansas City did. How big of an overreaction will we get ?

You have to look far more deeply than just rank. In the final 6 games without Myles, the offenses the Browns faced ranked as follows (Offensive DVOA):
Bengals: 29th
Dolphins: 28th
Steelers: 31st
Cardinals: 13th
Bengals: 29th
Ravens: 1st

That's an approximate 21.8th ranked offense on average that our Garrett-less defense faced. So it was trash against trash offenses.

Whereas in the first 10 with Myles games:
Titans: 6th
Jets: 32nd
Rams: 16th
Ravens: 1st
49ers: 7th
Seahawks: 5th
Patriots: 11th
Broncos: 26th
Bills: 21st
Steelers: 31st

That's an approximate 15.6th ranked offense on average that our Garrett defense faced. So it wasn't great, but the offenses it faced were much better.

Obviously, there are other variables that may be harder to define, but I think it's clear that our defense with Myles was a lot better.

Anyone else rooting for the Chiefs? I feel like the Texans would most likely be a wildcard team, so I'd rather they lose. :conf (8):

I'll be rooting for Patrick Mahomes and David Johnson tonight. Rooting against Watson, Kelce, CEH, and somehow Mahomes as well.

10-6

Baker makes Pro Bowl
OBJ has career year
TEs just kill people
OL is top 5 in league

DL top 5 in league
Ward stays healthy

Would you care to make a little wager ($25 donation to RCF) about these predictions?
They are a bit nebulous, but I get the gist of what you are saying, and I disagree with 5 of them.
