So no one wants to hear it but the chances of this trade being a bust for the browns are significantly higher than to work out (super bowl win). From a historical aspect it's not even close. Only 1 team has ever traded multiple first round picks for a player and won a Superbowl with that player and it was this year's Rams. Thats it. That's the list.
And that was for a QB with one Pro Bowl appearance. Watson has 3 in 4 seasons. The only other modern QB’s I could see that have done it are Mahomes and Wilson. THat means no Brady, Brees, Manning, Big Ben, Rodgers, etc.
I don’t think the trade is a bust if they don’t win a Super Bowl. Obviously that’s the goal, but it’s extremely hard to win the Super Bowl even with a great roster and a great QB. So many things have to break your way for it to happen in the first place.
The fact is, had the Browns not got Watson and had to proceed with Baker, they were going to either be giving up picks next year to move up and draft a guy or they would’ve been making a similar trade for another QB. If you’re drafting a guy, you’re damn near back at square 1 and risk the possibility of guys like Myles, Ward, Chubb, etc being too old, injured, or flat out leaving by the time the QB is ready.
Also, just taking a look at our last three 1sts, if we could’ve traded those 3 picks for Aaron Rodgers three years ago everyone would forget there was even a 1st round. We traded one for OBJ and then drafted Wills and Newsome. I like both guys, but OBJ, Newsome, and Wills can’t get you anywhere near a top 5 QB, nor is their value remotely the same to a team.
