Cleveland Browns Quarterback Position

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
His footwork both in and out of the pocket is...not great, Bob. But, I agree with most of the other stuff. I'm not totally sold on his arm and his ability to fit it into tight windows.

Here’s the thing about the footwork.

1. He has the most active feet in the draft. Always chopping, sliding, finding lanes. That’s something you love to see.

2. When it comes from delivering from his base, he makes some wonky steps with his footwork. However, is that a concern if it doesn’t affect the accuracy and he has enough velocity to make the throw? I say absolutely not. He’s still deadly accurate on those kinds of throws and hasn’t the strength to fit it in.

And honestly IF the selection hasn’t been finalized until this morning then things are worse than we know.

Trash under pressure.

I will say this, Baker does remind me of a shorter Jared Goff. So it does not shock me that a lot of guys in the FO and coaching staff love him.

I also think if I had to pick a QB for the Haley offense, it would he either Darnold or Mayfield. Probably Darnold but Mayfield is better now.

It's not even good. It's a work in progress.

His stride is too large, he often throws off-platform with no need to do so. His release is average or a bit longer at times.

Generates a ton of sink to get enough on the ball to push it down the field. Struggled with consistency on hitting his receivers in stride on the deep ball.

The off-platform stuff outside the pocket is often pretty good. But pretending Mayfield isn't a huge work in progress is nonsensical to me.

We've posted a ton of stuff on him showing off these inconsistencies.

No prospect is perfect. Not Rosen, not Darnold.

But where you’re coming up short is knocking Baker, yet acknowledging he has every single one of your beloved “traits” that can make a FQB.

He’s only going to get better at things like footwork, etc. things he can work on and improve on.

The other stuff isn’t nearly as teachable such as Rosen Andrew Darnolds decision making

91 attempts, lowest in the group you're highlighting.

The Georgia game, when they really started getting to him showed off some of these inconsistencies. But more often than not he's able to move around freely back there.

I'm not a believer that "decision making" is solely based on turnovers while playing in completely separate offensive schemes. Similar to how accuracy isn't solely based on completion percentage or the gaudy numbers of a run and shoot scheme.

Mayfield has a decision making issue to rectify as well, he throws into traffic quite a bit and makes some dangerous throws once the first read is taken away.

Well you'd expect that with Oklahoma's line. But how does that change the fact when under pressure he was, by far, the best?

To bad he can't make the NFL type throws consistently either.

"Sports Info Solutions, which supplies college football data to ESPN and works with several NFL teams, found that while Mayfield’s Oklahoma offense isn’t heavy on NFL throws, Mayfield is among the best in college football when called upon to make them. Filtering for all passes in 2016 and ’17, thrown from the pocket, 15 or more yards downfield (Dig, Corner, Post, Seam, Go, Sluggo, Hitch & Go, Post Corner, Corner Post, Out & Up), the data shows that Mayfield is 31st in FBS over the last two season on these types of attempts, but 10th in completions and yards, with 22 touchdowns and four interceptions.

“Interestingly, the so-called big-armed top 3 are all below Mayfield on the list,” says Matt Manocherian, director of football development at Sports Info Solutions and a former scout with the Saints and Browns. “Darnold is just two behind Mayfield in completions but he lags in yardage and touchdowns despite more attempts, and his rate stats are downright ugly. Rosen’s rate stats are average, with the exception being that he has 11 touchdowns to zero interceptions on these throws. Finally, Josh Allen ties for 25th in completions, but like Darnold, his rate stats are troubling.”

Yet he consistently delivers on those throws the traffic because his accuracy is as elite as it comes.

All day to throw, results in a sack.

Underthrown deep ball, wide base and a deep delivery with nothing to show for it:

Poor footwork reading to his right, drops the arm angle and misses badly:

Internal clock, from an NFL perspective, needs a complete overhaul. Breaking mental habits will be incredibly difficult for someone with his mentality.
