Cleveland Guardians Offseason Discussion 2021-22

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Weren't they already working him into the OF rotation last year?

It would be a shame if Jones and his athletic ability were to be wasted at 1B

Yes, he was playing some RF... it's likely once he is healthy, he will have his reps split between 3B and RF with an occasional 1B... at least for now.

First off,,,,Congrats to the Guardians, and the fans, on the extensions of Jose and Clase. It may have been an obvious move. But it had to be done to move forward nevertheless.

Sooooo -
Now that we have one of the best players in MLB, and one of the best closers both tied up for the prime of their careers.
Perhaps we should now concentrate on improving the surrounding roster to make it competitive.
I've taken the liberty to provide a list of our present roster that could form a potential Championship team in the future.
Here we go:
3B - Jose Ramirez
CF - Myles Straw
Amed Rosario (Position TBD)
C (Backup) - Austin Hedges.

That's it. So I guess there's more work to do.

Semien and Yelich say otherwise.

People always underestimate how much those remaining years of team control mean when evaluating extensions.

It’s funny to see how shocked people are at the numbers.
Who is a better player? Semien, Yelich or Jram?

31 year old - Semien just signed a 7 year deal - 25,26,26,26,26,26,20 = 175 MILLION contract ends as a 37/38 yr old in 2029

30 year old Yelich's deal starting now 2022 (ignoring the fact he made more than Jose the last 2 years) 26,26,26,26,26,26,26,20 (with a 6.5 million buyout) - this was the "deal" I thought JRam would get. = FROM 2022 on he is due 188.5 to 202 MILLION - (his 9 year deal, almost twice as long as JRAMs averages 23.88888888 per year) He signed his deal 2 years and 1 month ago as well.. Contract ends as 36/37 year old in 2028 or 2029 - option in play

29 year old JRAM - 5 year deal.. picking up next years option gives him 149/150 million at contracts end so we have starting in 2022 12,13(NEW DEAL),24,25,25,25,25 = 149M Contract ends as a 35/36 year old in 2028..

Both Semien and Yelich are going to make a 20+ million more than our guy. Granted, JRam will be a FA sooner if that matters.

Jose made a deal.. One he was comfortable with.. Also no seems shocked, but Jose wanted to play here and they FO agreed to his more than fair figure.

Feel free to crunch numbers - i may have messed up.

I call BS on that one. You're either negotiating a contract or you're negotiating a trade. Can't do both.
Besides. I couldn't even come up with an attractive return from the Padres anymore.

Honestly, they probably could have a general discussion with a couple teams like the Jays, Padres if JRam didn't sign. Honestly that's not unreasonable to have. I mean running teams in OOTP, I will always check to see what teams would offer a player if a player is in JRams position. Plus I have said before Arias would be the person to take over 3B if JRam was traded if we did BPA that didn't included a 3B...

Bieber is very likely to "bet on himself" IMO. Like Jose, he wants to play for his "team" - which will likely be a juggernaut and/or Cali team.. Again total opinion here.

Bieber is the type to commit to his team, but also he is aware of how much he could earn as well. Just guessing but He likely told his agent, if the FO came with a legit offer, then it has to be taken seriously otherwise waiting til free agency is fine.

A-fucking-men to that. I was so sick of that crap. Especially the ones with Kirk's fat ass as the main return.
I have never seen Kirk mentioned as the main return in a JRam trade. I posted a hypothetical trade using BTV where the values were something like Manoah at 77 and Kirk at 22. If anyone has Kirk as the main return that would've been silly. However I think the BTV value would've been a decent price given our catching problem.

Just about every stupid Toronto fan proposal had Kirk, Biggio, and a couple other turds coming back. Kirk is way overvalued on that site.

You’re forgetting some pretty important players in your list.

Oh I guess I never had the pleasure of seeing those. Re: Kirk I disagree but I'd rather check back in a few years on that one.

Don't underestimate Kirk's ability to hit... The dude can just flat out hit, but anything else is a question mark...(outside of knowing the best places in town to eat...) Honestly if we didn't have Reyes, I'd be okay with getting Kirk, but since we have Reyes, I want nothing to do with Kirk...

Exactly how I see it, you can put him at catcher but don't expect much. Still his defensive metrics were much below league average last year but not actually negative with the positional adjustment on FG. Basically saying that he was kind of bad at catcher but because you can slot him there, he has value. He can never be a 1B or OF either so it's really stuck between C or DH.

He could probably handle 1st base ala Prince Fielder and would be as good/better than Hafner, but that is a pretty low bar. That said once you move him off catcher he should become a full time DH - while still being a backup/backup/emergency catcher...

That profile smells good for a NL team with the new DH rules.

I'm not going to disagree, but Yelich signed that before 2020 and was in the same position as JRam with the wanting to sign a long term deal with the Brewers. I'd say if everything was the same (like his age, coming off a good year, same amount of team control) he would have likely got a couple million more. That being stated, JRam I think AAV was a bit low, but it was still close enough to fair market that they were willing to take it. At least that's how I see it in my mind...
