Coach Mike Brown

Re: Mike Brown?

Well if Brown fails, we have a ready made coach in the front office.

Re: Mike Brown?

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Indiana Pacers assistant coach Mike Brown was offered Cleveland's head coaching job, two sources within the NBA told The Associated Press on Monday.

Brown, who has been Rick Carlisle's top assistant the past two seasons and in the NBA for 13 years, was selected by owner Dan Gilbert to become LeBron James' next coach. Brown is expected to be introduced as Cleveland's coach in the next few days, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

``That's going to happen,'' said one of the sources, who has intimate knowledge of the situation.

The Indianapolis Star, (Cleveland) Plain Dealer and Akron Beacon-Journal also reported the Cavs' choice of Brown.

The 35-year-old Brown, who did not immediately respond to a phone message, would be the second-youngest coach in the league after New Jersey's Lawrence Frank. He would succeed Brendan Malone, who took over as interim coach March 21 after the firing of Paul Silas.

Brown is regarded as a defensive specialist, and that's an area where Cleveland needs some help after allowing 96.5 points per game last season. Before joining Carlisle's staff, Brown spent three seasons with San Antonio, winning one league title as an assistant with the Spurs. He coached San Antonio's summer league teams.

Brown also has worked for the Washington Wizards and Denver Nuggets. He interviewed for coaching positions with Toronto and Atlanta last summer.

Gilbert, who reportedly also interviewed Phil Jackson, Flip Saunders and Eric Musselman for the coaching job, could not be reached for comment.

The Cavaliers also are awaiting the next move of Detroit coach Larry Brown, whom they would like to hire as their next president of basketball operations. Last week, the Cavs received permission to speak with Brown once the Pistons' season is over.

Brown has health problems that could preclude him from coaching next season, so a move to the front office would allow him to stay in the game. Brown did not address his situation or the Cleveland job following the Pistons' practice on Monday.

Following Sunday's loss to Miami in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals, Brown would not comment on a report that he had to decide by Monday whether to accept the position with the Cavaliers.

Another member of Indiana's organization, vice president of basketball operations David Morway, has been interviewed for the Cavs' vacant general manager's position. According to reports, the club also has talked with Washington Wizards director of player personnel Milt Newton.

Newton, who has been with the Wizards for two seasons, played on Larry Brown's 1998 NCAA championship team at Kansas.

Gilbert, owner and CEO of Michigan-based Quicken Loans, took over the team on March 1 after buying the Cavaliers and the operating rights to Gund Arena for $375 million. He fired Silas about three weeks later while the team was in a tailspin that eventually cost the Cavaliers their first playoff appearance since 1998.

One day after the season, Gilbert fired GM Jim Paxson.

frm wat i heard so far..tha guy sounds pretty good...he was apart of tha spurs championship team as tha assis. coach (don't ask wat year)..i jus hope our players can adjust.

Really, this may work pretty well. Larry could probably guide our rookie coach during the course of the season. People were quick to state that our new coach has no head coaching experience, and there is no one to help him out besides the assistants. Now with Larry in office, it should make things alot easier.

This guy has been under some of the best, Popavich and Carlisle. I didn't like the prospect of PJax coming here, too much association with the ole Cavs-killer teams. Supposedly, Larry's top choice is Mike Brown and the hire has Lebron's blessing. Lebron's supposed first choice, Nate McMillan, was protected very well by Seattle. By the time Nate is off contract, all the other teams will probably have filled their vacancies because of the uncertainty surrounding June 30 and the lack of a new CBA. Flip would have been interesting, but I guess Gilbert did not want to get into a bidding war with Paul Allen, whos something like the 3rd richest guy in the world.

I'm not all that sold on Larry Brown, if we were bringing in an unproven coach, it seems weird to also have an unproven guy at the top. I would have liked Morway in to counterbalance, but it seems now that this is Larry Brown's team more so than anyone else's. The coach and GM are both going to be his choices. I wonder if Chuck Daly will take that offer to be in a smaller role in the front office.

Basically, the entire organization is new to what they're going to be doing. Gilbert the rookie owner to go along with a rookie president, GM, and coach. It has the potential to be a really really good situation, and everyone seems to have a solid background and in position to take on their new roles, so now we get to see how its all going to work.

Is Mike Brown the best the Cavs could have done for a head coach? That's a big question for me. Gilbert supposedly was going to build a 1st class organization and was willing to spend whatever it takes. At least that's what we heard from Gilbert defenders. It seems he went cheaper for a coach and threw the big money towards his obsession with L. Brown.

I think I would have done everything to bring in an experienced, more proven head coach. I would be more willing to hire a younger front office executive on the rise to fill the GM role than go for a young unproven coach.

If a team president was going to be hired, I'd rather have someone who just oversaw things and was more of a consultant rather than someone who would have power and control over all decisions.

I really don't understand this move at all.

The Cavs are trying to build a winning organization and show LeBron we are commited to winning.

Brown is unproven and regardless of how good he will or will not be this is a big risk because he is less proven then the coach they just fired.

If you want a team and organiztion that is commited to winning then you have to be commited to bringing in people who have proven they can win at that level and Brown has proven nothing.

All us Cavs fans better hope this is a good coaching move because if not this is just fuel to the fire for LeBron to say this organization doesn't have a clue what it is doing and I want to play for a contender elsewhere.

I don't think Phil or Flip seriously considered the cavs. Too much rebuilding going on, to much Cleveland factor. MB is a risk, but if he brigns defense to the Cavs that will be a good thing.

This is 100% true CleveRocks. Saunders was not going to come here as he and Gilbert could not see any common ground when it came to boundaries. Jackson was a pipedream. The other "experienced" coaches available were not ones with great track records. There were some decent other options in Adelman and Nate, but that was a big risk awaiting permission. It left us with few options outside of Musselman. I am willing to accept the decision and not think that we have failed.

I think the Cavs could have gotten Saunders if it wasn't for Gilbert. Gilbert doesn't have a great reputation around the NBA now and needs to fix it in order for the Cavs to be as successful as they can. The whole Larry Brown scenario and the Cavs hiring process since after the season has also done nothing to quiet the doubts about Gilbert. Flip didn't get a good impression after talking with him and didn't feel he'd be comfortable working for him.
To me Flip was a very good realistic candidate that our owner cost us.

I would have preferred Musselman. He is as highly recommended as M. Brown but has the added bonus of proving he can be a head coach after leading a mediocre Golden St. team to their best records in a decade. He also has experience as a head coach in the CBA which has proved to be a good training ground for coaches.

I too would have preferred Musselman. All I have stated is that Saunders was not an option in the end as he and the owner didn't click. If you have an owner and coach who butt heads all the time, we will head for trouble. Gilbert owns the Cavalier's, so we need to find the best mix with him. It may suck, but its just the way it has to be. I prefer someone like Mike Brown over some recycled mediocre success rated coach. He brings with him a history of success unknown here.

MIKE BROWN OFFICIALLY CAVALIERS COACH
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Mike Brown's first head coaching job will be to make sure LeBron James isn't watching the NBA playoffs next season.

Brown, a 13-year NBA assistant who won a league title with San Antonio, has been hired as the coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers. On Wednesday, the team ended weeks of silence to confirm Brown as their choice.

He'll be introduced Thursday morning in a news conference at Gund Arena by Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, who finally has his coach and may be close to hiring a new general manager and president.

``Mike Brown was our first choice and only choice to be the new head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers,'' Gilbert said in an e-mail to the AP. ``Mike has learned from the very best in the business. He is focused on the defensive end of the court and I am highly confident he is exactly what the Cavaliers need to move our team to one of the very best in the NBA.''

The 35-year-old Brown spent the past two years as Rick Carlisle's top assistant in Indiana, where he was credited with improving the Pacers' defense and developing Jermaine O'Neal and Stephen Jackson.

Brown's main challenge in Cleveland will be getting James, the Cavs' All-Star forward, into the NBA playoffs for the first time. Cleveland was poised for a return to the postseason for the first time since 1998 before their 2004-05 season collapsed amid an ownership change and the firing of coach Paul Silas.

The firing of Silas, which came with the Cavaliers at 34-30, was followed by Jim Paxson's dismissal as general manager; the silence of James, who recently fired agent Aaron Goodwin; and Gilbert's secretive search.

Gilbert also reportedly interviewed Phil Jackson, Flip Saunders and Eric Musselman for the coaching vacancy. Before launching his search, Gilbert said he wanted to have his GM hire his coach. It's unclear why he changed his plans.

Earlier this week, The Associated Press, citing two league sources speaking on the condition of anonymity, was one of several media outlets to report that Brown had been offered the Cleveland job.

He is the league's second youngest coach behind New Jersey Nets coach Lawrence Frank, who is 34.

``It's a great choice,'' Cavaliers guard Eric Snow said by phone on Wednesday. ``He's a guy who has worked hard and paid his dues. He's very knowledgeable in the game. It's great that they're giving an opportunity to someone who is very deserving.''

Brown is the Cavaliers' 17th full-time coach and sixth in six years, and there are reports saying he'll be working under Detroit coach Larry Brown. Gilbert's representatives have spoken with Larry Brown about becoming the club's president of basketball operations when the Pistons' season is over.

While the nomadic 64-year-old coach defiantly maintains that his focus is on his health and the Pistons, who are tied 2-2 with Miami in the Eastern Conference finals, there are signs pointing to him eventually joining the Cavaliers.

Mike Brown is one of them. As an assistant with the Spurs -- he won an NBA title with them in 2003 -- Brown worked with Gregg Popovich, a close and friend and confidant of Larry Brown's.

Before joining the Spurs, Mike Brown was also a scout and video coordinator for the Denver Nuggets. He later joined the Washington Wizards as an assistant under Bernie Bickerstaff and was also a scout.

A father of two, Brown played two seasons at the University of San Diego after spending two years at a community college.

If i were Mike, I wouldnt buy a house in Cleveland, because I wouldnt be surprised if he got fired before the end of the season and Larry Brown ends up moving from president to coach.

That will always be inside his head, as well as ours. The health though of Larry Brown may though force Larry to stay off the sidelines, despite his wanting to get closer to the action. At 64, quality of life is becoming more important.
