Still a terrible deal. He isn’t worth that and we don’t need 5 more years of him driving to the basket with his head down with no plan to do anything other than shoot.
A terrible deal is signing a guy with a bad back to a 5 year max extension to immediately have him start missing games due to back pain; see Michael Porter Jr.

With the way things are shaping up, it's progressing towards Sexton's long-term role being a bench super-sub/scorer... I have to wonder with his upcoming free agency, if the Cavs at some point experiment with what that looks like and if he's worth paying in that role..

The hard thing being a). the team is playing so well as-is, and b). Sexton, to his credit, hasn't done anything wrong and is the teams best scorer so to him it probably would seem like a demotion.. It would be a tight line to walk for JBB/Koby but it's something that is worth looking into...
I’m interested to see if Sexton’s injury, with Okoro and Markkanen hopefully returning soon, provides a path for the Cavs to ‘naturally’ explore this without ruffling too many feathers…

Collin really isn't a guy who gets frustrated and gives up. This is his first 2 years with the same coach. He has had a rotating cast of misfits and malcontents the whole time and this is his first time on a team. He has had shooting slumps before and worked his way through them. He hasn't caught a rhythm yet. He will.

I am getting closer to thinking Sexland can't start together, but they have show flashes. It just seems like the defense is elite when there is an actual sg there. I do think that could be solved by allowing Seton to start, but JB could bring Okoro in at the first sign of trouble, then have Sexton come back in with Rubio.

There's ways to handle this, but I don't think the best player on our team the past few seasons sucks, he just needs to find a new place.

There is this thing that can happen to caregivers once their family member is cured. They get depressed and don't have a clearly defined role anymore of being the person that helps them with everything. Collin was the big bro holding the hands of the baby that can barely walk and now the kid is zooming around and Collin doesn't really know his role yet. It will come and he will hit shots and it will probably look like last night where the other team can't hang with the Cavs.

Signing an efficient 20 pt scorer to a deal under 20 million a year into today's league is a steal. Regardless of how bad you hate Sexton.
when the Cavs are winning the way they want to with the style of play they want to use, I think he's more like a 16-18 ppg scorer while playing 24-26 MPG but with a high USG%.

Sounds like Sexton's group sought a 4 year $100m contract, Cavs offered a 5 year $85-90m contract. Makes sense, as that slots in under Allen but more than Markkanen.

Anyone that wishes any injury to this kid is all messed up. No doubt there has to be a world of pressure on him this season as he's betting on himself during a contract year while also trying to change his game to fit in and help the ballclub win games. There's no way Rubio is going to average 37 points so the team really does need his efficient scoring. On top of everything else Collin has been playing beat up since the initial shoulder injury in the preseason.

Hope he can take a few games and get himself healthy. From what I've seen most Cav fans do appreciate what he can bring to the table. In a way he is still the heartbeat of the team even though clearly Mobley and Garland are the two taking the big steps this season. He excels at the most inconsistent parts of the game occasional spot up 3 shooting, dribble handoff attacks, and attacking congested lanes. Those are very hard to be consistent at on a NBA level. Add that there is more physicality this year and injuries, Collin is a tad more off than usual. I'm still rooting for the kid though.
I was pretty preoccupied while trying to watch the game yesterday, but after rewatching most of the first half, I thought Collin was on his way to having a nice game. His shot still wasn't dropping but I had no complaints about anything else.

I hope Okoro is ready to come back by Wednesday. If we are gonna hold Collin out a little while to let him heal up, we're going to be pretty damn thin with Isaac, Lauri, and Kevin out. Get well soon, Bull!

I heard it slightly different.
Cavs wanted to offer 5/$100m. CAA was fine with the $20mil per season but would only do so if Collin signed a shorter deal (3 years) so he could become a FA sooner esp with the rising cap. Cavs balked at that. Honestly that probably would've been the best solution since he would've been paid, the contract would've been tradeable esp with the rising cap, and the Cavs could've even played him off the bench without the contract thing hanging over everyone's head. We all saw how Lonzo and Lauri played last season under the same conditions.

Regardless I don't see the point of putting him in any trade machines at this point as the return would be laughable. Cavs probably need to play out the hand all the way to RFA. Even if they can't sign him at their number next summer at the very least should get similar value to what the Bulls got for Lauri.

I agree with this, and appreciate that he's still adjusting to this new role. There's no real reason to believe he can't still be an efficient 20+ ppg scorer if asked to be. If other teams around the league feel the same way, then Collin on a $20 mil AAV contract is absolutely a tradeable piece should Koby eventually decide to go that route.

Gonna be hard to get a 3 year extension done w/Gilbert post LeBron, is my guess.

The 3 years makes sense, that aligns with the first year of the 7-9 year experience max. It allows him to potentially maximize his life time earning beyond the extension if he is take less per year than he wanted.

He will get 20-25 a year, even after not scoring as much this year. Sexton has value, and we are better with him and his all out effort and offensive efficiency than without.
