Dan Gilbert Punked

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
However through family I know Reghi and I can agree with everything W&G said. Luckily Since I am not affiliated with the cavs as he is I can put things a bit more bluntly. Reghi is an absolute scumbag of a human being he is pretentious, condescending, and extremely disrespectful to many people.

That's fine and all, but can you tell us how you really feel?

:chuckles:

What many of the "Reghi lovers" fail to realize is that, if he really were such a wonderful NBA play-by-play man, why hasn't he landed another gig like the one he had here?

Bingo. I made the same point in the Reghi thread from last week.

But I guess the counter-point is that they and many Clevelanders liked him, which begs the question whether the owner should have ignored/buried Reghi's foibles and let him continue on because the fans appreciated him. Dan Gilbert just doesn't seem to be the type to put up with that.

Personally, my wish would be that Gilbert insisted that FSNOH fire Fred and Austin and replace them with some unbiased announcers with some actual talent and then left them alone. Perhaps hire away some folks with national announcing expererience.

How about hiring the Memphis guys?.........NOT!!!!!!! I'm still snoring about that game.

I love the Knicks and Nets commentators (excited, funny, cynical, realistic, pretty unbiased) -- but I guess that's because that's where the national guys usually go. I still miss Chick Hearn in LA but the new guy is still pretty realistic and unbiased, too, even when the Lakers are blowing it.

Cleveland is in the middle of the pack - a fairly exchangeable play-by-play guy (who is clearly excited about the Cavs) seated with an equally excited former player. Excitement and emotions but not much analysis. Cavs announcers are not nearly as biased as some pairs (Boston - execrable) but also not as insightful as the best of them. I would like A.C. to buy a thesaurus but not become Walt Frazier. Or go to summer camp with Dominique Wilkins, who is surprisingly good at color commentary, even if you would think that all he would care about is plays above the rim.

Could be better. Could be much worse.

The Reghi situation, I think, had more to do with just a personality issue. I don't think that Dan Gilbert really liked him ....saw some examples of just how Michael Reghi treated people when the cameras were off, and he just didn't have a very good opinion of him, and didn't want him associated with his team... Plus, he had a very favorable opinion of, and a solid relationship formed with his replacement ...from the Detroit market.

It's one decision that he made that you could say he did for personal reasons, above and beyond professional reasons.

But, many who have some knowledge of just how Mchael Reghi can be person to person, can say that his removal was a welcome decision.

He wasn't loved by alot of people that had to work with him ...

That's surprising to read. Definitely clears things up, thanks for posting that.

I liked Rehgi better than McCloud... but not by much. I guess they are the play-by-play guys, and Austin would be considered the color coordinator. Austin is funny to listen to, but I can't say that he is professional sounding. And that's who I really miss as a color coordinator is Matt Guokas. He actually analyzed the game, wasn't a homer, and didn't try to be an entertainer.

In a perfect world, and I think everyone agrees, even tho he is close to retiring... promote Joe Tait to tv play-by-play and give him a HUGE raise

Guokas was really good. He currently works in the same capacity for the Magic. Let's not talk about the color commentary stage of Mark Price's career.

But I think everyone agrees with your comment about Joe Tait. I wonder if Gilbert will retire Tait's "number" someday the way the Lakers did for Chick Hearn. Hearn's jersey with an image of a microphone hangs in the rafters at Staples Center.

Amen. Sometimes I'll mute the TV and put Tait on the radio. The only problem is that there is a slight delay in game times from the tv to the radio. It gets a little bothersome, but most of the time it's worth it.

Why hasnt Joe Tait ever done television? I have not lived in the Cleveland market since 1990 and have heard tons of other announcers in other markets over the years. To this day, Joe Tait in my opinion is right up there with the best in the bussiness local or national. For example, i am a big Costas fan, (almost got to meet him, my ex co-worker's dad was best friends with Costas) but I would put Joe Tait right up there with him. Doesnt TV make more than radio? Just curious.

I have no grounds on which to base this, but I wonder if it's because Tait likes working alone. He must also like describing the whole scene for radio listeners in ways that wouldn't make as much sense with a TV image.

I can't think of a TV commentator who broadcasts alone. Even Chick Hearn, who worked the simulcast on radio and tv typically had a partner -- like the very good Stu Lantz, who didn't have time to say too much in those days.

Another possibility is that Tait's sweaters would hurt the eyes of those watching at home.

Tait just has a face made for radio, that's all.

Funny that you said that and I meant to bring it up after the game:

I actually remember being impressed by the Memphis announcers' understanding of the game and their understanding of the Cavs as a team.

They may not have been the most exciting announcers but IMO I'd rather listen to a couple intelligent basketball guys give an objective opinion on the game than some obnoxious blind homers like the Celts announcers.

I think I remember liking the Knicks announcers when I've heard them in the past. If I recall they have a good mix of knowledge and non-homeristic observations. Could be wrong though.

I agree that if their words were on a written transcript, the Memphis announcers would be top notch. They are also funny at times and had smart things to say about the Cavs strategy and individual players. But maybe the lack of good play by the Grizzlies that night meant a snoozefest in terms of energy.

I can't listen to the Celts announcers. Although Johnny Most was even worse.

I think that's what it was.

I always look at analysts using what I call "The Hubie Brown curve" I consider Hubie to be the best national analyst around and I use him to grade other announcers.

Are you knowledgeable? Hubie is a basketball encyclopedia. He has the advantage of having been a coach but the guy lends insight to the game that even other coaches respect. He's a national basketball treasure. He always has a good understanding of where the momentum is going in the game and is impressive in predicting and/or suggesting in game coaching strategies.

Are you objective? I think Hubie does a good job of criticizing both teams on the floor equally and an equally good job of praising them. He's always been high on LeBron and the Cavs for instance, but there have been several games where I can recall him getting on the Cavs for various reasons.

Are your observations relevant to the game, the way that it's played right now? It's easy to forget sometimes that Hubie is 75!!! You don't hear him criticizing the fundamentals of today's game or claiming that Dr. J's era of basketball is better than LeBron's. He'll acknowledge how things have changed sometimes but he commentates based on the way the games played rather than how he thinks it should be played and I really respect that.

Are you interesting? This is where Hubie probably would lose points in the eyes of some. Depends on whether you find the X's and O's of basketball to be interesting. If you do...then Hubie's the guy. If not...you're probably gonna be a bigger fan of the color guys.

On that topic...Gus Johnson is one of the best color guys out there IMO. Wish he did more basketball.

I love Hubie just for the way he pronounces Z's name.

"Il-glow-skas"

At least he's consistent with it. I've never heard him pronounce it any other way. :chuckles:

Just like Herb Score never pronounced Albert Belle's name any other way than "Albit"
