I’m ready to officially say that Garland has made “the leap” from intriguing young player to pretty much fringe all-star.
As he grows and matures and builds chemistry with this team over multiple seasons of continuity hopefully(something that we rarely get to see here but could pay dividends in the long run), as he continues to transform his body more and more every offseason…I do believe he will be an all-star sooner rather than later.
He is 21 years old. 21!!! That’s why the turnovers don’t scare me too much.
He can play with the best of them. That’s why guys like Steph Curry say the things they do about him. The kid has shown dynamic and elite ability in scrimmages, camp, practice, etc.
Now he’s showing it in games. It was always a matter of when, not if.
Shit I’d argue Garland is the 3rd best player in his draft class behind Zion and Ja.
I’d say it goes…Ja, Zion, Garland, Herro, Barrett in that order. Then Hunter, PJ Washington and Cam Johnson right outside that as good role players.
That was actually a prettty good draft in hindsight.
Garland is ascending though. I think it would be prudent of the Cavs to get an extension done with Darius as early as possible. If they think there is any opening to lock him up beyond next season for anything short of a max contract, I would seriously explore it. Because I do think Darius Garland is going to be a guy who can get a max offer sheet by the end of next season. Now, I know Klutch may decide to advise Garland that he should not agree to taking less than a max and may be willing to take their chances in RFA…
I do have some hope that Garland decides he loves being here with Mobley particularly as well as Allen and if the Cavs come swinging with a competitive 5 year offer in the 125 million range that maybe they can get something done….l
