Is this guy truly serious?

In what world does a 36 year old with a .710 OPS and diminishing skills command 6 years 150 million from a team?

This is truly the most ridiculous contract demand I have ever heard and more than likely will ever here.

Can anyone justify giving Jeter more than 5 million a year at this point?

This is truly a test of Yankee orgaizational loyalty. Both Jeter and Riviera are aging faces of the franchise, and both of them will seek more than their worth simply because of the value of their "brand". The Yankees are the only team in the league that can overpay both players without a second thought, but they want to appear "tough" on them so that they don't have to overpay everyone else too much. I have to admit that I'm enjoying seeing Brian Cashman be challenged for a change.

Pip would give him a 15 year $600M deal and hand deliver the checks....in the nude. :chuckles:

It's absurd. Let him and his retarded gold gloves play for Arizona

Listen, assholes, Derek Jeter is an institution... If there is one athlete in the history of sports that deserves a blank check from his employer, it is Lord Jeter...

The GREATEST franchise in North America also possess the number one brand in this country and Derek Jeter has represented that brand with class, dignity, professionalism and respect... It is the Yankees honor that he chooses to stay with them.. It is not their right to hold onto him..

If I was Hank or Hal Steinbrenner and Derek Jeter came to me and said he would like to remain a Yankee for another six years at a reasonable $150 million dollars, I would fashion up that contract immediately and make sure to blow on the ink after he signed it to make sure it didn't smear and then laminate that bitch-- and then kiss one of his 5 World Series rings that he busted his ass to win for that organization....

A three year contract for one of the Yankees Mount Rushmore's is a slap in the face... Especially when THE CAPTAIN takes shortstop each and every game and has to look to his right to see an overpaid player and not a true Yankee..... (sorry, Alex, I didn't mean that)....

I think 150 million is a bit much.

I think the Yankees are fucking ignorant for not giving him more then what they are offering though. Hell they give Pavano, Burnett and washed up scrubs that much. Why in the hell can't you give one of the greatest and truest Yankees of all time a little over the top of a contract just to say thank you? Its going to be his last contract and he deserves atleast that much after all he has done for the Yankees. Without him, I don't see them winning 5 more rings that they did with him. He is Mr. Clutch. You don't hear scandals about him like his partner at 3rd. He is just a true professional.

Having said all that, I really can't stand the Yankees and I don't like Jeter but I respects him more and more by the type of person he is and how he plays the game.

I love seeing Cashman being put in a pickle now. If Jeter plays elsewhere Cashman is fucked. If they really throw out a huge contract and Jeter doesn't perform, Cashman is fucked.

I agree that Jeter is a loyal player and has helped produce multiple championships but bottom line is 25 million a year is way over paid for an aging veteran. Exspecially when he hits 40. I see your point but come on. The Yankees will find better talent for that money, that is why the continually win Championships. No other team will offer 6 years 150 to any player that is nearing the end. But I wouldn't be surprized if the good old Yanks sign him up.

Who cares? The Yankees have a license to essentially print billions of dollars a year. What's an extra 10 million a year for an extra year or two? It would be a good PR and clubhouse move.

I heard the Indians were going to put in a bid...

Offering the likes of Derek Jeter $25 million/year is indefensible. I don't care how much of a landmark someone is. If Jeter was putting up Pujols #'s, then yes. He's not even putting up Marco Scutaro numbers.

I would agree with you on a normal ball club. But the Yankees CAN afford it and it not hurt them at all. Just for some reason they want to play hard ball with an ICON!

True. Still, I think it's insane to do offer that much to a guy that's 35.

Renteria is out there for the taking, Yanks fans. Get yourself a real winner for one tenth of the price.

I'm actually hoping the Giants are not one of the teams putting their hat into Jeter: The Decision II. He is a fine player who is at the end of his prime. He deserves to go out a Yankee, King of New York. What happened to Torre was just anti-climactic. I believe Torre should have been forced to manage not in an LA uniform, but in a Payne Stewart golf outfit. If Jeter moves on to another team, he should be forced to play in a Payne Stewart golf outfit for the duration of the contract.

Nobody will have to worry about their team getting Jeter...These guys are playing hardball because they know Jeter won't even consider playing for inferior organizations.... :)

Jeter is the pinstripes... Getting that 3000 hit in a Yankee uniform is HUGE....

And the Yanks and Jeter both know there isn't an organization out there that will even give Jeter 10 million for one season...so I wish they'd stop the bullshit and sign him to their ridiculously overpriced contract.
