This was always the most likely outcome, IMO.
I watched the entire interview on NFL Network.

Personally, I think the NFL would absolutely prefer avoiding court and settling at 12 games + fine. Problem is, Watson will never go for it. Maybe 12 games, or 8-10 games + fine, but not both 12 games and a fine. And I get it, in that scenario he'd basically be paying to play at that point.

Hopefully they can reach a settlement. Otherwise, I think Harvey comes through with a year and this will go to court and get dragged out even further.
Everything thats been going on lately has just been posturing from both sides during settlement negotiations.

Feels like the NFL is very much on board with the concept of "what's the absolute maximum penalty Watson will accept without a lawsuit?" and that's where this is heading.
Couldn't agree with this more.

The difference between $5M and $10M fine isn’t going to bother Watson as much as a 8-10 game vs full season is going to bother Watson…

If Watson is suspended a full year, that $1M base salary is rolled into next year and he would essentially make $46M over next two seasons and as opposed to $92M..

He’ll pay the extra $$$ to get at least 6 active games in this year so his contract accrues, if he has the choice…

I’m wondering if the NFL is allowing Watson to play tonight to see the perception on it before settling with Watson. If the outcry isn’t too bad maybe they will settle for 8-10 games

So turns out this isn't a thing. I was working off this incorrect info for like a month. Accrued seasons only matter for players who don't have enough seasons to reach unrestricted free agency. Watson's already past that, so it doesn't apply to him.

Watson only has to be active for 1 game for this season to count. The only way it doesn't count is if he's suspended the entire season.
