We have 2 guys with legit availability issues in Garland and Windler. I'm ready to move on from both.
windler for sure. Garland is trending that way. Garland just stay healthy. I think everyone got carried away with him be on the Olympic development team or whatever it was called. He shows flashes then gets hurt. Would not get rid of him just to get rid of him but I would be very open to moving for a decent return, especially at the wing

Garland hasnt been as big of a health issue as it looks. Right now he sprained an ankle, it happens, he will be back soon.

First year he played 59/65 games, so in a normal season that is 75 games, that is good.

2nd year he played 54/72 games, so in a normal season that is 62 games, not good, but not terrible.

If you look at his first 2 season he has played in about 83% of the games, or 68 games out of 82 if he had played in an 82 game season. Really not bad.

Windler has played in 31 out of 137 games or 23% or 19 games in a regular 82 game season. Throw away the 1st season to a weird injury and its still only 37 games in a regular 82 game season.

They are not even comparable. Kyrie only played in 110 games his first 2 season less games than Garland and Garland has played in 2 shortened seasons. Just saying a normal season a player will miss 10 games or so, Garland has missed the equivalent of 14 games a season, not bad at all honestly.

Imo its not comparable at all.

Kyrie - Injuries + brilliance on the court
Garland - Injuries + Passiveness on the court

Sooo.... why are people so excited about Windler? Enlighten me. I don't see it. Like, at all.

He's a constantly injured 25 year old who's played a grand total of 31 NBA games. A great college shooter, but in the real world, he's hitting a nauseating .338 from the perimeter. It doesn't always translate.

To me Windler looks like a fringe guy in the tight 8-9 player rotation. He won't outplay Cedi.

It's all a question of health.

I think the .338 is too small a sample size to judge his shooting, especially since his numbers were much better until he re-injured that leg last year. He has a pedigree of a legit long-range shooter, particularly adept at coming off screens.

He's a plus rebounder at his position, which we definitely need, and has high offensive BBIQ. He's not going win a lot of isolation battles, but they don't need him to do that. Defensively, he's a smart team defender. Pretty long, but can get overpowered by beefier 3's. And I do think he's better than Cedi unless we get "good Cedi" from here on out. He just tends to make the smart play more often than does Cedi.

I get excited when he can play but then I remember that he typically injures himself pretty quickly after playing.

Maybe we can look back on it as an early career blip, but until he's putting in 60-82 game seasons in the NBA, I can't see it.

Let's help tonight starts that kind of roll though of availability so we can at least gauge and judge him over a real sample size of games and situations.

He made nine 3-pointers in a row last year at one point before his knee started acting up. He's an excellent rebounder for a small forward.

I think he is a jack of many trades…He’s going to have some nights where he makes seven 3s. You know that’s coming. But I think what he does every single possession that continues to make both your offense and defense run, is who he’s going to be most notably for sure. - JBB

The intangibles I think that he does every single night, he makes your team better. All the little things that coaches preach and beg for guys to do, he does them instinctually. - JBB

One member of the front office compared him to Utah’s Joe Ingles. - Fedor

I still feel like he has quite a bit of ways to go -- in the best way possible. He knows how to get to the rim, so the next step is finishing, and I feel like once he gets to that point, he’s going to be deadly on the inside and outside. - Jarrett Allen, 2/25/21

According to CleaningtheGlass.com, Windler ranked in the following percentiles among wings last year: blocked shot percentage - 92nd percentile, steal percentage - 74th percentile, offensive rebound percentage - 73rd percentile, defensive rebound percentage - 93rd percentile, 2-point shooting - 60th percentile, 3-point shooting - 23rd percentile.

He does a lot of things well but ironically the thing he is supposed to be good at (long range shooting) was his weak spot. I think knee pain was a factor in that. He was in the 5th percentile in corner 3's but in the 69th percentile on non-corner 3's, which makes no sense. Maybe it was a mental thing but he only hit 32% of his corner 3's, which is pretty bad for a wing. He hit 38% of non-corner 3's.

If he could bring his corner 3 rate up to 38% for an overall 38% on 3's, and add in everything else he does, he would be a solid contributor off the bench. His biggest problem was his turnover rate of 20.5% was highest on the team and worst in the NBA among wings. I attribute that to having played at a relatively low level of college ball and the NBA being much faster with longer and quicker athletes. Also being a rookie he was more inclined to pass than shoot and opponents were looking for that. I expect his TO rate will come down with more experience.

I like his quick decision making (highly undervalued skill), quick release, constant movement, and rebounding.
His shot looks pure, but yeah, so far it's been the hope that it will fall once he gets minutes.
But if you aren't healthy, then someone like Cedi gets your minutes.

Windler can shoot. 31 games to start a career is not an answer. He is an excellent rebounder, not bad on athletic ability. He has good court vision and seems to know how to play the game.

That said he has played in 31 games in 2 years, started this season injured, has had about 5 different major injuries in his short career. Is already 25 and has the experience of a rookie, was at best going to be a role player, and as of now might be on the outside looking in as just a role player.

If he can be healthy and live up to what he could be he would be an awesome harp shooting sg/sf off the bench he will play tough D and rebound. But it is looking less and less likely.

Was gonna post his quick decisions. He snaps the ball away or shoots it fast. Can make a pass with either hand so it doesn't matter what side of the floor he is on.

He's a SF who can shoot, rebound, and make good decisions while being smart on d.

My god he is exactly what this team needs.

I really liked him playing with Rubio and Cedi. Cedi keeps the ball moving when he is with out her good passers.

there is nothing worse than being the only guy who keeps the ball moving. It either makes you thirsty for your own shot, or keeps you from cutting/trying to get open after.

Everyone knows that the moment we cut bait on this guy he's going to stay healthy and turn into the next Danny Green or Joe Harris, right?

I mean I'm as frustrated as anyone, but I'm not sure about declining his option so we can sign the next crop of Valentines and Pangoses with the money we saved.

Did the Cavs decline his option for next year? Haven't been paying attention to the Windler situation at all except to see that he did suit up last night

Catchy new thread name.
