Early 22 projected roster!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
When you want to look ahead, you can start by looking back.
Here was our 2021 opening day lineup:
Luplow CF
Hernandez 2B
JRam 3B
ERosario LF
Reyes DH
Naylor RF
Chang 1B
Perez C
Bieber SP

No, we're not going to be in the playoffs this season. But we did the next best thing. We answered questions about next season, and continued to build.
I think we can all agree, that we can field a stronger lineup today than on opening day.
And I didn't even mention the pitching development.
You skipped Amed, but your point remains the same.

If you look at how the Opening Day roster looked on paper, instead of in hindsight, we expected more from Eddie.

Going into next year, I don't expect improvement over the Hernandez-Amed combination. While not as good this year as in 2020, Hernandez is still a pretty fair player.

But overall the team looks better, the main reason being Straw. And anything is better than Bauers-Chang at first.

You'd think that the FO will bring in a bat that will be an improvement over Eddie....and the overall defense will be improved.

Until Straw, our OF defense was perhaps the worst I've ever seen...but next year it has a chance to be elite.

No, he skipped the starting SS Gimenez, although Amed did finish the day batting 1.000!

  • In games Gimenez has played SS, our record is 21-10.
  • In games Gimenez has played 2B,our record is 7-8. (he has not played both in a single game)
  • Saturday was his 23rd birthday.

Gimenez is younger than some of our top prospects coming up... Indians are the youngest team in baseball and we are over .500 as a record. I think the future is bright in that sense because we are going into the prime years with a lot of players...

We are going through a minor rebuild/retool and the pitching side of things is very close to being finished without a doubt in my mind. I think they were hoping Gose, Nelson, Perez, Hentges etc from that left side would take a step forward and it just didn't happen. Hentges a lot of people with good baseball knowledge felt he should be a reliever not a starter and with him out of options (I believe), could end up being a bullpen arm in 22 cause of the amount of starters we now have. Hence why I think a Chafin type would be a target for us in free agency. I am hoping since he is from Ohio he won't try to get an arm and a leg from us in free agency.

When it comes to position players, we aren't up with the pitching just yet. I still feel like we are going to retain Perez for one/two more seasons (aka a restructure/resign of his current contract I think should be in the cards) or we replace Perez with a long time vet of like Gomes. Both would be around the same price, so I think Perez stays with Hedges combo. While only CF, DH and 3B is set for 22, so we have a lot of minor league guys that will try to make the push for the rest of roster. That's really the uncertainty in 22, is how these guys are going to produce. Hence why I think we will try to supplement the roster with a bat.. Canha seems like a normal Indians/guardians target, but I wouldn't mind someone just a little better than that!

I didn't mean to suggest that he's not performing well, only that if he doesn't then it could be his head on the chopping block. We need to keep in mind that this is a good problem to have. If any of the talented minor leaguers are going to find their way onto the major league roster next year there will have to an opportunity presented due to injury or a lack of performance. It's not going to just be gifted to them.
We're agreeing here.. Andres Gimenez appears to be getting into a groove.. seeing the ball.. putting the bat on the ball (although we'd like to see better/stronger contact).. In short.. it doesn't look like a high hard one is going to knock the bat out of his hands..

oh.. and he could be a wee bit surer with ground balls.. too many have a slight bobble or run up his arm creating urgency to make a play when it should be "just routing".. as if that exists...

Anyone going to pull up some defensive stats for BradGOAT? I think he’s settling in nicely to 1B and more than just on an end of this year basis. Should be the starter there next year. My boy!

I dont believe the FO will sign a major FA reliever. They just don't do it, because of their volatility.

**************

I think the FO will roll with Bradley at first. But the FO has also committed to contact first bats, so he's the last of the big swingers in the near future.

It will be JRam, Franmil, and Bobby, surrounded by a bunch of roadrunners that can get on base. The only other high K guy will be Zimmer.

Canha is the perfect fit for our lineup. But his age and cost will make it risky...and the FO is very risk averse, esp when it comes to money. We can't afford another Michael Bourn (30 yrs old) or Nick Swisher (32 yrs old).

Honestly that's not true, they will sign a veteran reliever and they havent been afraid too. Doesn't mean it works out a ton, but they will...

Canha isn't going to get a great offer this off-season honestly... I doubt he gets much higher than 8 million for a season...

Bradley appears to have adjusted to the pitchers' July adjustments. He's been much more disciplined since his return from the IL, controlling the strike zone with less power. This is good to see.
His glove is passable, (much better than someone who's never played there) but he's not a defensive asset.

When was the last time we signed a major FA reliever?

When was the last time we extended a reliever?

The only two times recently we traded for a major vet reliever were Miller and Hand. One was the best reliever on the planet. The other was arguably the best closer in the game at the time. Both were on ridiculously favorable contracts.

******

Canha is making $7 mil this year.

He may get a two year contract with an option that guarantees him $15 mil as a minimum.

Eddie got $8 mil on a one year deal. Canha is a lot better. If he only gets a one year deal, it will be correspondingly higher. Age doesn't matter on a one year deal.

But if Canha goes for only $8 mil for one year, he will be a Guardian.

Signing FA for anything more than a 1-2 year deal is typically a bad idea.

The payroll will rise as we invest in retaining guys already on the roster.

I would only offer a free agent reliever 1-2 years maybe a third that's a team option... I wouldn't give more than that. Plus if we sign a Canha, I wouldn't do more than a year or two either. Not worth doing more than that...

Kerry Wood... But that was a hot minute ago...

We sign a reliever quite often to the 2-3 million range almost about every season. We don't sign top ones, but we do invest in middle tier guys...

Kerry Wood was 12 yrs ago...lol.

Which MAJOR FA relievers that we signed for $2/3 mil are you talking about?

Certainly, nobody at the Chafin level.

I mean technically parker is at 2.5 million lol

Tommy Hunter got a major league deal from us, Boone Logan got 5.5.. with a second year option... In 17. We acquired Hand in 18... When Shaw left... 19 we signed Perez and Clippard... Acquired Wood, Maton, Cole etc

So price wise it was Boone Logan in 17, so signing Chafin to the same type of deal wouldn't be to far out there.
