The Jazz have had a tough enough time trying to slow LeBron James at full strength in the past. Now they'll have to contend Saturday night with the Cleveland Cavaliers star minus their best defender in Andrei Kirilenko.
Kirilenko reported little improvement with his injured right ankle at the Jazz's pregame shootaround. He did a little jogging but couldn't even run full speed and won't play tonight. His availability for Sunday's game at Denver also is in doubt.
"It's not even close. I was trying to jog and it's not there yet," Kirilenko said. Asked about not being able to play against James, Kirilenko replied: "I want to play him. I like to play against him."
Kirilenko received a cortisone shot after he left the Jazz's victory Tuesday over Minnesota complaining of discomfort in the ankle. He received a similar shot in December and said it took three to four days for the pain to dissipate.
The Jazz will start Ronnie Brewer on James, with C.J. Miles and Paul Millsap also possibly taking turns on defense. With Kirilenko out, Brewer's focus must include staying out of foul trouble and on the court.
With Kirilenko out, the Jazz also recalled Kyrylo Fesenko from the NBA Development League's Utah Flash. Fesenko averaged 12.5 points and 9.6 rebounds in eight games with the Flash.
