Game Thread | 2020-21 Season | Game $70 | Celtics @ Cavs | May 12, 2021

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
well there is always trading out picking up an early 2nd round flier on long term development option like Yoan Makoundou if the Cavs don't like anyone at 8 or 9 if they are that unlucky

If they don't draft a player that moves the needle significantly I feel like we will be right back again doing the same thing next year,,,it's just frustrating.
You can’t get that type of player when your FO preaches to win meaningless games like tonight that will cost you valuable ping pong balls!

What sucks about a win like this is reading people justify it.
Show me a single justification post. Nobody who posted in the game thread tonight wanted them to win. The game was played. The outcome occurred. Discussion has ensured on the nature of the game and the relative impacts of the win, as well as the results of some of the other bottom 6 teams over the past 10-12 games. I would think there is a little grey area vs. a strict 0/1 binary.

This is my favorite post of the night.

Succinct. Accurate. Well done.
It's not accurate. It implies there are people who wanted them to win, who think its good they won, who don't recognize the impact the win could have, etc.

I apologize if I came off irritated.

Same for you, Mr. @Rich.

I've been watching the standings, and I think it has been something of a minor miracle that MIN passed them, and that ORL rose up to tie with them. This sucks.

But what can one do? They're not OKC and they are not going to so obviously throw a game against a team playing even worse than they are.

No need to apologize. My opinion is just mine and no one needs to agree with it. And I get the frustration with the outcome of course.

Like I mentioned up thread, I know all the math and acknowledge the shift on potential outcomes it can have to move down from 3-4 to 5-6. I also acknowledge that even though its best to have the most odds, percentages play out over thousands of drawings. Any 4 random drawing, like for the 4 top lotto spots can fly completely in the face of the odds. That is not justification or to suggest its not better to be at 3 or 4 than at 5 or 6 heading into the lotto, just that I think the magnitude of how it will affect these massively random odds is so small that it's not something to go nuclear over.

As for the other teams:

I don't know enough about OKC's situation. Is it insinuated that SGA and Horford are not actually injured and were shut down for pure tank purposes. Once the ball is tipped off, there is not a single player or coach in the league who is trying to lose.

Every other team slotted in the 2-6 range, (DET, ORL, MIN) all just as desperate as us to tank, has won more games in the past 10 than us. These late season games where some teams have checked out or other teams are missing 3 of their top 4 players(like BOS tonight with Kemba, Brown, and Smart all out) are just so sloppy and anything goes. And again, I do not believe there is a single player or coaching staff in the NBA that is intentionally trying to lose a game once tip off happens.

Just shooting the shit with you, nothing more than that. Maybe some stuff in there you agree with and some you don't.

I agree with all of it!

You are always very logical, and clear-sighted.

Though what is up with the Season 3 version of Audrey?

I just read an abomination of a post equating drafting high to Minnesota's playoff drought (nevermind that they had their active coach and President of Basketball Operations...well... DIE a mere two days before the season started just as he was rolling up his sleeves to start developing his recently drafted #1 overall pick).

Minnesota was compared to Utah and Denver because those two cities have stars who weren't drafted in the lottery, I suppose.

The premise of the post was justifying not being a organization dependent on obtaining stars through the lottery.

The post was made tonight because we just lessened the probability that we would win this draft lottery, this draft being the most loaded top heavy draft with franchise star quality players at the top of it in years, by winning a game that we had no business winning.

His post was accurate and he didn't have to imply what was already posted.

I apologize if I came off irritated.

I think your irritation was justified.

I'm more upset with Boston than the Cavs. I can't believe they aren't playing for Brad Stevens and feel we just so happened to catch a team on the second night of a back to back after their best player just decided to stop playing for his coach.

As the game kept going, I was sitting here shaking my head like... did Boston just decide to tank their way into the lottery by shelving everyone but Tatum and counting on losing out and losing the play-in game so they can take a stab at the lottery?

Because if they did, they're not only smarter than we are, but they have bigger balls and are more decisive than we are too :chuckle:

The post you're referring to was not a justification, celebration, or defense of the win.

It was post outcome anecdotal commentary.

Kind of feels a bit off for a board mod to call a long time members non name calling post an abomination imo though. Critique the content of his post all day but no need to tear someone down for their opinion.

Long story short though, I still don't believe anyone was justifying the Cavs win, at least not as I understand that word to mean.

Actually, you're right.

@Rich I called your post an abomination because I disagree with the premise. And that wasn't cool. My bad brother.

I guess I think of Justifying a win as actively defending it, saying it was a good outcome. And I didn't see anyone do that nor do I feel like my posts were doing that. Maybe there's a context I'm missing.

I guess in addition to the 7-8 guys who were already out injured we could have just held out Love, Sexton, Allen, or Okoro with mystery pregame injuries and played with a 6 man rotation. TBH, the way Boston played and seemed unengaged tonight, I'm not 100% sure that would have guaranteed a loss.

Hopefully the NBA awards us with Cade for banishing Celtics to the play in where they're probably gonna go out in straight sets
